Awesome thread. I will be cheering your team on. Let’s get those Zooks on a podium.

By chance - do you sell any merch (hats or shirts)??  Would buy some in a heartbeat.

Let me preface this with a statement to ML512: If this crosses the line as spam, I’ll delete this reply immediately. I’m just grateful y’all let us tell this story as it unfolds but don’t want to compromise the rules or spirit of the forum.

OK, disclaimer out of the way. Yes, I have shirts. I bought 100 @ $3.11 per shirt to hopefully raise funds, and just recently figured out how to ship them for under $5. (The first few I sold the usps flat rate made it pointless at $11 plus tax, but I was happy to have my buddies in some shirts supporting the team)

That said, I’d like to sell them shipped to your door for $25, or $20 in person.

Once I sell half of them, I’ll be ordering another batch to update some sponsor logos (I didn’t plan on switching a few deals during some economic rough times, but such is life).  I also need to order some with our presenting sponsors this year, as Kwikset, Nobis UG, and TiLUBE need to be added on the next batch.

If someone wants to purchase one, shoot me a message and I’ll get you payment options.

A few updates as we roll into the final stretch before round one:

After Cody’s year not only becoming a fan favorite in arenacross, but also being the hype man behind the red beard off road team, he got an offer to ride some Kawasaki’s thanks to Mr. Baylor. Honestly that opportunity couldn’t go to a nicer person. He called to tell me about that a few weeks ago, but we’ve stayed in touch and I’m genuinely proud to call him a friend. Unfortunately, it sounds like he’ll be missing arenacross all together as he has a tibia plateau fracture that may (fingers crossed it doesn’t) require surgery. Here’s to hoping he gets healthy in time for some indoor racing, and his first beverage (pedialyte, of course!) is on me.

That leaves me with an opportunity to fill a spot on a 450. I’ve been in talks with some guys I honestly never expected to get the time of day from, which is pretty surreal. Fingers crossed, I should hear something fairly soon and can post some really exciting news. Granted, it will be last minute heading into round one, but following that they’d have three weeks to test before the next race. That’s the drawback of the series starting so soon. I love that it gives us round one in essentially a vacuum with not much else going on and more focus, but the timing sucks for sponsorship budgets and support programs. The best way to overcome that seems to be consistency. The more you can roll over on the equipment or sponsorship side of things the better. Which brings me to my next fun update:

Here’s the build info, and some stuff is more to come (I’ll post pics when we get our graphics, Throttle Syndicate is doing the honors and absolutely killed it with the RM Army eras graphics).
-Full works JGR engine

-Hinson complete clutch

-Different inertia flywheel (JGR had I think 6 options, their favorite, and BarX’s favorite seem to be the second heaviest)

-Custom 1.5mm longer rod by Wiseco, as part of that “racer elite” rod series

-Custom JE Piston. The wrist pin is offset 1.5mm higher to accommodate the rod, it has lateral gas ports in the compression ring land, the valve pockets are juuuust big enough to clear the oversized valves, and the dome is different to match the CNC machined combustion chamber on the head. Fun fact: it uses OEM rings, OEM dlc coated wrist pin, and clips. It also starts life off as the same forging as the off the shelf piston. Dean Baker takes the added measures to radius and lightly smooth all the sharp edges on the bottom, as well as the valve pockets.
-Cylinder Head. Another work of art, this has the same cam grind as the customer spec JGR heads, but degreed slightly different. Below the cams are DLC coated shim buckets, steel spring retainers with holes drilled for weight reduction (think ti washers style), works valve springs, and valves that appear OEM, but are 1mm oversized on both intake and exhaust. The seats and guides are a different material as well, but don’t ask me as I have no clue. The porting is beautiful. One head I bought was finished by hand, the other appears to be CNC finished, minus the epoxy on the long side radius. I had my hands on some other ported heads from various shops a year ago, and I’ll just say the good ones who make good and reliable power follow the common formulas used by high level (a la f1) engine builders to a T, and the hacks building time bombs hog out the ports and throw big cams and the highest compression possible to compensate.
-GET ecu mapped by the man himself, Dean Baker. Seriously, his mapping is amazing. Pro Circuits is also amazing. I think these guys with access to factory equipment are just plain better than these other shops. Sorry, not sorry.
-other engine odds and ends: it has a works transmission, but I’d be lying if I said I knew what that entailed. It may just be stronger shafts and gears for the whoops. JGR also had different primary gears available on the clutch baskets. They would not change gearing and risk changing the chassis length, so they changed gearing at the basket. Other goodies include ti bolts EVERYWHERE, a custom clutch arm, and probably 20 other things I’m too dumb to notice. Riding this engine has taught me something, I don’t know squat.

OK, chassis time:

-D.I.D. Rims and chain, race wheels being built this weekend with yellow rims on OEM hubs.
-Dirt Tricks sprockets. Never gave these a chance til this year, dang they’re actually the same weight! Freeing up some sprocket budget (one of theirs lasts 10x longer) allows for more resources elsewhere, always a plus.
-Galfer “works Suzuki spec” brake line. I believe it’s narrower diameter for a firmer feel at the lever. We’ve got a few different master cylinders to try out. (Current gen honda with the linkage lever, OG honda which puts the banjo safely behind the master cylinder, the old 11mm KTM masters)
-DeVol linkage with adjustable length for Josh. Doc hasn’t ridden with one yet or requested it.
-Suspension duties are handled by Fastlap in Alabama. Steve has been great to work with, and I’ve been sending him stuff since 2005. As we broke in Doc’s bike today we slowed the rebound on the shock two clicks and that was it.
-Cycra is handling the plastic duties, and they make a sweet skid plate… for the 450. But if you get a little creative it fits the 250.
-Guts racing provides seat covers, and hands down they make the grippiest material. Seriously. AC said it on his recent pulp appearance, they’ll cheese grade your booty if you’re not careful. They can also make one with the normal grippy material too.
-MotoHose! Vital’s own, Lumpy, hooked us up with some hoses last year. The beauty of his hoses and running Suzukis is I get to roll that product over to the next year haha. In all seriousness, he’s been a genuine supporter of the team, so shout out to Lumpy!

-Works Connection throttle tube and elite clutch perch. Both items are simply the smoothest operating pieces, and tough as nails.
-Phoenix bars and grips. Jason over there has been awesome to work with. They make a great product (seriously, give him a call and let him tell you the attention to detail in his grips) but my favorite thing is the bar selection is simplified. With other companies I was somehow an RC bend (despite being 6’5”) or a CR high, or a CR/KX. Now do that cross reference for 4 guys, oh and one wants taller bars for the faster tracks 🙃. Phoenix is simple, pick your height, and the sweep, go ride.
-TiLube oils and TiFuel. This was a cool one, personally. I’ve been an AX fan since I was a kid, and TiLube has been involved with so many teams over the years. Joe, the owner, has been such an asset sharing experience running higher level teams.
-Tamer holeshot devices. I love that they have two buttons and the button and groove alignment window is so wide. The last thing I want to do when setting a device with indoor suspension, is to try it again!
-DT1 filters. Filters are kind of splitting hairs, but I prefer their little neoprene seal on the rim. I cut out the screen, and also remove the overlapping plastic on the airbox. I also prefer to drill holes in the side panels rather than the air box.
-Specbolt hooked us up with some really cool “nickel works” kits. These have dished heads, bright nickel plating, and drilled washers which I’m a sucker for. I’ve been buying these since 2016 off of Amazon, so it was cool to get in touch with the owner. Give “MOTONATIONSUZUK” code a try at their website if you need a track pack (you do)

Tires are kind of the last thing up in the air. More than likely, we’ll be buying tires this year. We had several great seasons with Pirelli, and last year paid for them. While I would love to keep running them, that’s a solid chunk of the budget that could be applied towards travel if I can lock down a tire deal with a comparable tire.

Not sure why someone downvoted you, that’s exactly how to get ahold of Paul at JGR. He and Dean have been real lifesavers for this program, and frankly we have the absolute best bang for the buck of an engine package thanks to them.

Cool I love AX & wanted  to race it the last 4 yrs. Run 140 hr weeks  a ton of injuries end up broke. My plan was the 125 all star class & 40+. But the lap times in 125 r equal to the 250 pro of some riders. But making the 250 main is 50 bucks the b main is dropped this yr in the GT series. That still wouldn’t cover signup or hotel. I,m back in Chicago for #11 Eastern European Chicago 1099.  Super windy day @ crap flying everywhere trying to move in. Trk has been run Hard.   Where you buying tshirts for 3.11 ?  I,m sure some others trying to raise money would like to know.  And shipping under 5 are you using the post office?  Anyway good Luck racing AX .  With 3 series now hopefully people pack the arenas like yrs ago.  Real hard to get a ticket back then.

Everyone remembers Primal impulse Suzuki AX team. Maybe barrow a little, Primate Impulse with replica AXO gear or the colors at least.  TJ makes custom seat covers your choice of letters  or #,s .  I had a TUF. Cover made that team owner from Chicago land owns UFO plastic yet I think. Give him a call. Question where are the guys practicing?  I wanted to hit 4 state moto complex for the pro am & practice on there replica GT AX track a few days.  But injuries & the weather was nasty bad trying to get the bike together.

I was on the phone snooping around for some old JGR parts when Paul reminded me of this thread and made me realize I should post an update.

-Doc got a few rides in on Supercross before getting his van ready for the trek out west for the first weekend.  He put a half hour on the race bike before putting that suspension on his practice bike to continue to get comfortable on that suspension.  So far we’ve only slowed the rebound down two clicks and moved the sag 2mm, so the changes have been minimal to say the least. Doc's instagram is docsmith464 if you'd like to follow his travels.

-Josh has been riding up north and made the road trip down with his buddy, River Guth.  These two are something else, they are spending the whole season living in their sprinter van!  Their first stop in Texas was Masterpool's facility, followed by some local culture at the Fort Worth stockyards, before a planet fitness shower and they hit the road.  They stopped off for some tourist activities at the Grand Canyon on the way to Reno.  Give Josh a follow on instagram, joshc_722

-I actually have a ride report on the works JGR 250 motor!  Holy cow.  Doc’s first time on a supercross track since last SX season was on the works motor and I expected him to take a while just to get his “sea legs” back, so to speak, not to mention we were starting with no baseline on SX suspension for him… He came in and kept saying the motor was the tough part to get used to because it had so much more bottom. For context, he’s practicing on a JGR customer spec head/ecu combo you could buy when the team was around, that supposedly made a smidge more than a GYTR combo… and the works motor just made it look slow by comparison.  The surprise to me was the increased bottom end.  Oversized valves, long rod, and cam timing all made me think I was going to be looking at a package that just boosted the top end from the standard JGR package.  I was wrong.  It was smooth, like there was no dead spot, it just immediately pulled, revved quickly (different inertia flywheel) and still revved to the moon. No clue how they managed to do that, but wow.

-Travis Smith has been recovering from getting injured at round one last year, and decided to give Reno a go this season.  He’s playing it by ear, seeing how he feels before deciding on the full season.  Travis brings a much appreciated level of maturity to the pit area, and knows little ins and outs of how teams operate from his time with some AX teams in the twenty-teens.  He was kicking my butt in the arenas back in the feld days a decade ago!

-I have been absolutely dumbfounded by the opportunity to talk to some points scoring guys in 450 SX/MX about racing this year.  When Cody decided to stick with the Kawi’s he’s been riding with help from Stu Baylor’s off road team, it left a void on the 450.  I could find a replacement, or race Texas Winter Series myself on it lol.  First I had a parent of a prominent AX rider reach out, and frankly I was shocked to be in the conversation.  I think where we missed out on this rider was not offering a mechanic, and maybe travel.  The 450 has since been ridden by a couple of guys who have scored 450 SMX points in the past year to test it out.  In order for the program to work for guys at that level, I need to be able to provide a practice 450, so we’re awaiting an answer on if we can pull that off.  I hate cryptic Vital posts as much as anyone, but I’d hate to say a name and then a higher level team pass on an offer to them because they thought they were committed to this already.  Worst case scenario though, I let a pro or two put a few weeks time on my new 450.  Best case scenario, we get an amazing rider or two but they missed round one due to timing.

-The Vital love has been real! I started this thread because I like Matthes’ longform articles, am not a big fan of normal social media formats, and figured I could post a nice story with easily trackable metrics for our sponsorship deck next season (replies, views, etc.).  What I never expected in a million years was to have some sponsors come in from this.  Kwikset came on board with the idea of bringing some home-builders to the races and giving some behind the scenes access.  As a kid who grew up working after school for my dad’s construction company, and installing a few hundred door knobs over the years myself, I thought that was amazing and my dad thought that was the neatest thing ever haha.  The Kwikset red pops on the yellow shroud, and our graphics for the next 4 rounds are really going to pop!

-Speaking of graphics, Throttle Syndicate absolutely killed it.  It's my first time not designing the graphics for myself or my team, and not only is it such a stress relief, but the just look great.  Behold the bike in all it's beauty before it was loaded up for Reno:

Good luck to you and your team. I hope it works out with the rider I asked you about on the Gram.

Make Texas proud this weekend and will be watching you guys in Reno.

Some better pics courtesy of @riverguth with the new Bill’s Pipes! (Also, I am a big fan of ditching the Allen head exhaust flange nut for a regular hex head)

Bill’s built us systems based around our engine package and sound requirements of the series. Very cool to have that attention to detail, not to mention the loooong legacy of Bill’s with Suzuki’s in arenacross!

Ok, I promise this is the last post of the bikes before round one. I’ll admit, I just like looking at them 😂

We put together and broke in a race bike today!IMG 2101 2IMG 2098 3.jpeg?VersionId=Mt7nRCLtrDlKvtqMuE

You can still buy Suzuki engine parts from JGR? Love the Bill’s Pipe.

Agreed. Frankly Kwikset is already the only brand name of door hardware could even tell you off hand to begin with, so it’s cool they want to be involved and utilize it to hang out with their customers in the construction industry.

I’m a big fan of that sponsorship model. The owner of the old NAT’L Switchgear KTM team (10+ years ago) told me if switchgear sold one client it would pay for the race team, so he just had to find a client who’d rather hang out at a race vs. the golf course. I think there’s too much “fluff” in sponsorships in the wake of social media. Interactions, followers, blatantly obvious posts where the riders are obligated to post and tag X amount of times, etc., etc. You can have five gajillion likes and views but not generate any sales, which at the end of the day should be why a company sponsors someone, right?

First, thank you!

Secondly, good eye. The mx34 was out of stock on Dunlop’s rider support page and I figured if the at82 was good enough for some factory guys at SMX it would be good enough for us! Supposedly these are exceptional on grate starts. It’s been a few years since I ran dunlops (been on Pirelli’s since 2018) but this sidewall was much softer than I remember Dunlop’s being (at least it felt like it when it slipped right on).

I’ll try to get some feedback from the boys on them after the weekend. We’re paying for them, so there’ll be no sugar coating here lol.

Exactly!  I just did a home remodel and my contractor is a huge off road guy.  Doesn't follow moto per se, but buys a new bike yearly, and rides often. I I told him about Kiwkset's involvement and he said it would be awesome to be invited to an event on behalf of a company that he uses!

Best of luck to you and kudos for your efforts!

I think you will like the AT82.  Ran them this summer in moto and they are awesome.

I am a Suzuki lover so this is all good news to see you pushing this program through.

Best of luck in your adventure!  Bikes look great and I dig the contrast of the blue moto hose and the Suzuki yellow.

Pretty sure there’s a rule against posting gif’s, but just imagine a ric flair “WOOOOOO” gif.

Travis has been a pleasant surprise all freaking day. He collapsed a lung and broke his pelvis at round one last year, and just got back on a bike at mammoth and wanted to just “feel it out”. Earlier in the week his ax shock blew out a bladder, so he rode his outdoor stuff today!

Doc had a bit more speed all day, but got pinched off on the start in his lcq. He ran 2nd in the B main until lines came together with a Yamaha rider, not sure which one (stuff happens).  Shout out to Adam Conway for a clean battle with Travis, Silviera for putting another Suzuki in the main, and Chan Baker for getting it done out of a heat!

With a guy in the main at a STACKED round one, I’m happy. Josh has been hard on himself after timed qualifying, but we’ve already talked about a game plan to feel more comfortable in the whoops and just relax a bit more and get some times on the board.

That said, I’d like to sell them shipped to your door for $25, or $20 in person.
image 140.jpg?VersionId=4 fCBWU44WaxWvfnGJjRA JULW

Once I sell half of them, I’ll be ordering another batch to update some sponsor logos (I didn’t plan on switching a few deals during some economic rough times, but such is life).  I also need to order some with our presenting sponsors this year, as Kwikset, Nobis UG, and TiLUBE need to be added on the next batch.

If someone wants to purchase one, shoot me a message and I’ll get you payment options.

Just sent a message. Looking forward to getting g one.
