I think the defining factors should be 1. mechanical ability, and 2. ability to work with and for the rider, / success from that relationship and quality of work

"Bear Dog"? I believe that was his nickname. I remember him from Primal Impulse Suzuki days. He could snore like nobody's business hahahaha, nobody wanted to room with him. He's a good dude.

Holy heck! what a small word, thats a trip man! Think you could get his contact info? that would be awesome man! Ron was a rad dude.

When i saw that last name i had huge flashbacks of all the good times. He was one of the only people my parents let take me to the races w/o them when i was young.

Gothic Jay for Factory Honda! At Budds in 2010 my dad and I saw him replace the clutch, change the transmission oil, engine oil, air filter, wheels, chain, some sort of electronics in the bike (maybe changing the mapping), brakes, and all plastics on the bike within 20 minutes.

10 minutes later, Andrew Short rides to the starting gate on that same bike... pulls the holeshot, gets 5th, and ends up getting his first overall win at Budds Creek. It was amazing to see a bike on the podium that half an hour before was about 60% in pieces.

Best Mechanic of all time is the one luckiest enough to have the best riders.... prob Mike Gosselar.

I can identify the two biggest dicks based on how unapproachable they were. - Tony Berluti and Brian Luniss. I remember trying to talk to both those guys in the late 80's at Lake Sugartree and both blowing me off. Laroccos Dad was a dickface too(and mike) if memory serves me correctly

i guess if you judge people by approaching them at a national while they are working...i'd be a dick too.

i grew up with the larocco family. mike was the most quietest, nice and polite guy you could meet. mom and dad were no different.

hate how people accuse others of being assholes because they won't take time to sign shit or give them free stuff. very annoying. i've seen it happen first hand and i feel for the riders of today that get bombarded by douchebags who immediately turn around and slam them for it.

its exactly where these autograph sessions developed from. gives a rider 1hr to be good pr so he can ignore it the rest of the weekend and concentrate on racing.
That is being a dick to the people who signs their paychecks(the consumer) not a very astute business practice. For every 1 Brian Luniss there are 10 others who are very, very understanding of their role as representatives to the consumer. I have been in MX 30 years and been to countless Nationals and those are the only 3 that I can remember. I have never once asked for an autograph from anyone in MX.... only to talk a little "tech" with my hero's mechanics

Pretty hard to top CW. A great example of a developer and tuner as well as a mechanic. As DV points out, that era demaded a lot more of guys. There were a handful of greats back then.

I think it was Kiedrowski who told the story on Matthes' pilpcast of White turning the top end he developed for Bayle over to MXkid's mechanic once Bayle was out, and it was on another level.

Agreed, Michael. I've been shown little things behind the scenes that Cliff developed for Honda that made it into production with Honda as the patent owner (as it should be per the contract), and man, some of the stuff he came up with or perfected was really impressive.

Next thing you know, the work that he did for David is on all the red bikes in the pits.

Skip, for me. Meet Skip at the 94 Indy round before the race, waited for him outside the Hoosier dome after the race with GF in tow. When he came out pushing the CR he asked if I wanted to push it. I said sure, handed the bike stand to the GF to carry and pushed JMG's CR to the box truck. Once there I just lifted it into the truck, then Skip asked if I wanted to hang out. Ended up getting to remove the suspension and box it up to send back to the shop. Hung out with Skip till 4am that night bsing and tearing the bike down. One year at Kenworthy's I helped put JMG's CR together, engine in frame, suspension on, ect ect and changed 11 tires. Wanna talk about being nervous watching the race the next day, knowing if he DNFed it was on my shoulders. But what memory's. I was way more excited to be working on that factory CR than meeting JMG. Ended up being a yearly thing until JMG went Suzuki.

I wish someone would write up a little bio like Warren did for Jon R on all the current mechanics on the circuit. Not just who they turned wrenches for, but in depth stuff. I'd be interested in Leeroy's works and I can't help but be intrigued by DeCoster's attention to detail. Maybe someone could post up a few pages out of that little notebook he carries around jotting stuff down. Smile

Robert is AWESOME. People have no idea how hard that guy worked for Robbie all those years, on top of running his business.
