You cannot prepare your body properly for those type of conditions. You can maintain perfect hydration during trianing and the week leading up to the event, but competing under those conditions you cannot in the time you have between motos re-hydrate yourself to be ready for the second moto. This isnt about cheating, this is about putting fluids back into your body when it is impossible to hydrate properly.

I know what it can do for you in this particular situation, as I have experinced it first hand. Also, this is not rich factory rider versus poor privateer guy. You dont need guys on the ground getting an IV. They could very easily be sitting in a chair just like they do in the GP's.

Good points but I've got to disagree.

If the body is incapable of recuperating naturally from the strains of a moto at that pace the solution seems simple to me: back it off a notch and pace yourself.

The body has its limits, and with the heat these limits are tested. It should be left up to rider strategy IMO to dictate what the riders can and cannot take.

X2..... also if they want they can monitor it also by (like someone said earlier) giving each rider one bag at the begining of practice or right before the moto.

The conditions are too harsh for the human body. Why not give them EPO so they can be better prepared? Seems like a slippery slope to me....

I agree it is a touchy subject, but something they should maybe look into.

Certain pro racers have large motor homes + very skilled trainers and lots of privacy between races.... the changes of these guys having an i.v between motos is what? 9.9/10 in my opinion.

What a professional athlete does in private is none of our business.

Right?

WTF guys? We are talking replenishing body fluids, electrolytes, not given cortisone shots. To even compare the two shows a complete lack of knowledge about human physiology.

If you want to keep the guys safer, allow them to totally recoup between motos. An IV would be like slamming a Gatorade without the stomach ache and nausea. They would be stronger and more alert for the second moto.

Hell, lets require it to help the riders stay safer. More alert and stronger = a rider less likely to crash.

How about having the track split where the riders have the option of riding thru some pretty heavy streams of sprinkler water aimed at their torsos?

If you watch the 'One Chance to Win' dvd on the famous Battle of New Orleans you'll see how they did it old school in the heat and humidity with 40 min motos.

Hannah had to leave to go to the hospital with heat masturbation after the first moto, and said that all that told him was that he had to get in shape to run with the big dogs.

That's the way it was, and the way it should be.

On another front regarding Texas, is that the best they can do for an outdoor mx track?

People rip on Kenworthy's as being a poor excuse for an outdoor track, but that Texas track looks the same to me (without the standing water, of course Tongue )

"heat masturbation"????!?!?!?!? exhaustion maybe? did you get your forums mixed up Indy??

and some of you wonder why it's not so much Cali now as it is Texas and Florida!
There were too many guys that WERE in shape. This isn't Curling, it's Proffessional Motocross, and Texas just seperated the men from the boys.
Getting in great shape like the front runners is a CHOICE,.....

men from the boys... I wonder if anybody called Korey Stringer a boy? At least to his face... Great idea, let's race until you pass out on the track from heat stroke. If a Dr. is present to administer IVs... why not?

I think you can actually give the IV barely under the skin - I don't think you have to actually get it in a vein. When they do it in a hospital, they put it in a vein because there's an assumption that other meds or possibly whole blood may have to be administered.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, seems to me, if all the riders are on gurneys with an IV drip between motos, something went horribly wrong.

Some of the guys admitted they had to back it down a notch as the heat got to them, isn't that really the sensible thing to do? Yeah, you wanna win, but there are always limitations to what you can and cannot do, in a race.

The last statement/paragraph made above pretty much hits the mark. If you're in position and feel good, you throttle up and go after it. If you're fading(E Tomac), you back it off and fight another day. Some will prevail(Rattray/Dungey), others will have to back it off and ride in survival mode and get 'em next round.
This is the way it's always been guys...
And you guys know it as well as I do...with the IV idea, it will inevitably be bogged down in legality issues, "dangers", what ifs, etc, etc. Never happen IMO.
But hey...

OK, so we start jamming needles and hanging bags on riders openly, legally after a moto.

Now what?
What's next?

Been to Ponca in July?
Been to Loretta Lynn's in August?

Gonna let parents seek a vein on little Johnny and hang a bag after a moto?

Can you hang a bag up to the 2 card going up?

How long before a moto do you have to stop hanging a bag?

What can you add to the bag?
Who's going to monitor the bag contents?

We going to allow bags hung on pee wee kids?

I find the problem with a lot of these comments is you guys act like how in shape a guy is dictates on how well the body handles the heat. That's totally untrue. Some people be it there skin type or whatever will react differently to heat. It doesn't have as much to do with how good of shape you are in as you think. You can be in the best physical shape out of everyone and still get heat stroke because of certain physical attributes that are beyond your control. Guys with fair skin are more likely to feel the effects of the heat then say a guy with naturally darker skin. etc etc. Just like if I go in a tanning booth fro 15 min nothing bad happens to me but my good friend who's pale skinned from Maine got a heat illness where his body like shut down and he was puking everywhere.

I do think it's a fine line when talking about what to do about it and IV's though. It seems so harmless to rehydrate with a IV but then you read a very intelligent post by Flarider above and it makes you think twice.

I raced in lots a races back in the days when we did 45's at over 100. The biggest thing is to be in shape and pound the water all the time. You must pound it day after day after day all season.

If you wind up needing and IV after racing in the heat, you're either out of shape or didn't pace yourself correctly.

Motocross is two motos long. If you spend all your energy before the first moto is done and require an IV to replenish fluids that badly. Then you're in no condition to race the second moto.

If you need an IV after the second moto, then go and get one.

I hate to sound like an old fart, but I've seen guys triple class it in the sand back in the day. With 45+2 motos in 95˚ degree heat. Requiring medical assistance for heat frustration after the first moto is waaay too nancy boy.
