Great weekends racing, but just waited over 3 hours to get out the paddock, someone got run over, emergency service called, absolute carnage, even riders and team personnel couldn’t get out, flights will be missed. What a mess,
Nowhere near enough security, toilets, food trucks or infrastructure racing ran smoothly which is the main thing but everything else was pretty shocking
The race is a huge money grab.
Thought it looked some what low on the crowd compared to previous years.
Crowd always feels smaller at matterly - place is huge compared to Ernee.
I have been there two times before and watching it on TV now i thought it was a lot of air on that hill side compared to the other years but i could be wrong.

Hmmmm… great racing yes but…
Someone hasn’t got a operational/process hat on when laying out the visitor entrance. Or entire site for that matter.
Rather than putting up some signs saying/:
TICKETS THIS WAY >
BAGS THIS WAY > (for search)
WITHOUT BAGS/BACKPACKS THIS WAY >
They would rather rely on 2 people to shout 10,000 times “go back!”, “no bags that way!”
Same logic for exiting. Want to leave? Rather than a logical signed routing system let’s recreate Madmax across wet grass & mud. I do admit it did get the adrenaline going a bit trying to keep the motorhome speed up through the mud. Guess that’s why someone got run over though.
Agree that it’s an embarrassingly low number of toilets for the number of people.
At least it was cheap. Oh no wait it was £160 for Sunday and “paddock”
I attended the 2006 and 2017 MXoN at Matterley, but didn't make it this weekend. When you look back to 2006, the crowd was massive compared to this weekend:
Yeah it was the same events i visited and felt the same when i saw it on tv today. I was watching it with a friend that also were there at the same time in 06/17 and he said the same thing.
there looked more on tv than i expected
anyone have any idea of factual figures
The crowd was much bigger in 2006, but a lot of people went to watch the highly anticipated RC vs Everts final showdown which, as we all know, unfortunately didn't happen in the end. I'd say the turnout this weekend was pretty similar to 2017.
£120 for a Sunday ticket (sod paying £40 just to wander the paddock!) was pretty steep and I was reluctant to pay that much, but it turned out to be a fantastic day of racing and I'm glad I went. Processing tickets/wrist bands and getting people through the gate could have been way more efficient and getting out was definitely a bit of a nightmare (no way as bad as 2006 though!!) so it definitely felt as though there hadn't been much planning in those areas, which was a surprise considering the number of events they've put on there now.
What I really wasn't happy about was paying £6 for my lads fecking icecream, but thankfully that was offset by the Revvi electric bikes being free to ride. 🙂 (they'll probably £10 a pop next time)
I can't say I'm surprised a thread started about this. I went as media, as I work in the industry, and we used the same gate as those paying for VIP. It took an hour to get in on Friday and Sunday. Road blocked all the way down the hill. Glad I wasn't paying. Security staff had no clue where anything was.
Nothing was clear as to where to go for anything generally. Friday morning, all the toilets up the top and outside the press room had no toilet paper. Press room had intermittent power and WiFi all weekend.
On Friday, after finally getting my pass, i walked straight in to the paddock and into the press room without showing my wristband to anyone and then I'm stood among all the best riders and teams. Pretty crazy that I was able to do that with no check being made.
One of the most laughable things is that pre-race, all the media get an email saying if you want to go trackside, you have to attend a safety briefing and collect a media bib. Which I totally understand. I didn't plan on being trackside as I didn't need to be so I didn't get a bib, however, on Sunday, myself, along with MANY others, simply walked into the infield with no one being checked and 75% of those without a bib. And 50% of those were wives/girlfriends, and I reckon grandmothers of riders, as well as other media and their significant others. You just need to look on TV as to how many people were trackside in casual clothing. And YES, i know i shouldn't have been in there.
On the first turn for race one, a guy from the FIM and a photographer had a heated exchange as the photographer couldn't get behind the fence as it was five people deep. The photographer pointed out that it was mostly public and the FIM guy just laughed and walked off.
On Sunday morning i nearly turned around after getting to the gate as it was just gridlock.
I know it's a massive event but as mentioned, it's not the first time they've had a big meeting there. Also heard similar stories from people who paid for VIP camping, and food, but certainly didn't get it!
It took three hours to get out because someone got ran over by a car. Heard it was a security guard and not good. That will absolutely back things up. Just as an accident on a road that hold traffic up for a long time. If you booked a flight to try and fly out Sunday night, you should have planned for traffic.
Wow 😯 if it’s this bad I will never go to a mxon. I love good racing but no way I’m being used as a money pit and get f…. I’ve been to TT Assen many times as vip costed me 600 euros but I got the treatment like a vip food toilets entree and exit.. if it’s a money thing to just collect and get nothing in return then to be able to watch some races lives.. fu,, my tv is perfect to watch everyone as well with food and toilets and able to pause when I need to use the toilet
That reminded me that some 'security' were driving around on Friday WAY too fast for no reason in a fancy Range Rover. i know there was no reason because they were all laughing.
I hope whoever got run over is ok of course.
There was also an emergency car with a doctor in driving around Sunday morning. I've no idea what that was about though.
I would most likely think it's down to venue/organiser. I went to St.Jean for MXGP in 2022 (smaller than MXoN of course), and within an hour everyone had left the track with no problems. Maybe cause the venue/organisation is prepared for it.
They used to use the bottom exit using the road that runs down beside paddock. Hope guy who got run over is okay?
Trouble is people get to feel entitled and all bolshy at end of a long day and do ridiculous things to get out!
I’ve been to mxgp Arnhem not as vip but still it was a good organisation the shuttle busses worked great the food was expensive but ok. Good view of the races and went back home before the race ended because of traffic but nothing but props. But I think mxon will attract way more fans then a normal gp will. when it’s that chaotic a man gets run over. It’s a real shit show
I can't speak on this venue hosting MXON since I've never been. At Red Budd it was nothing like being described here and the crowd was massive. There were issues with FIM figuring out VIP passes and the lines where so disorganized, but I guess that's normal for them. Go to Iron Man next year
I would love to visit USA mxon next year as a vip on my first mxon ever. But when I spend that much money I’ll better hope the organisation gets it all figured out. It’s not all about racing we the fans pay them to race so I would appreciate a little service.
Pit Row
There was another exit from the camp / car park by the way, you just had to drive across another field. It wasn't known about, but we bailed out of the main queue to get out after about 45 mins as it wasn't moving.
I’ve been to Matterley 3 times, ‘15, ‘16 & ‘20. The first 2 times it took over 2 hours to get out of the site & a further hour to get to the motorway. In ‘20 we left after the 1st motos because it was unbearably cold, obviously it wasn’t as bad that time. Getting out is only reason why I probably won’t go back.
This kid photoshopped gold skybox VIP passes to MXoN at Matterley in 2017. Even though I think he's a tw@t for doing it, it's quite funny really and shows how useless security is there.
He was there again this year, I saw him in the paddock a few times, but he didn't seem to be filming anything, looked to just be there with his dad.
Also if you want a real sh*t show story, a guy died in the camp site a few pitches up from us. Suspected drug overdose. He was getting CPR in the morning when we woke up, and then it was all taped off with Police tape shortly after.
Terrible. But it was absolutely wild in the camp at night, I've seen many tamer festival setups.
Anyone remember getting out of Broome after the national…..shit show….
Those electric kids bike were Stacyc's not revi
To be honest I don't think the accident is what held most people up, wherever it happened I don't think it was near the main car parking fields. The problem was that all the traffic leaving the event were funnelled into one single lane track (which became increasingly slippery with the rain).
Because there was no marshalling loads of people (as they often do) decided they would cut the orderly queues and create yet more channels of traffic which caused gridlock which makes the whole thing a bit of a shit show. It doesn't always happen, I've left races at Matterley before with no issues, but yesterday was pretty rubbish and there seemed to be zero management.
Oh sorry, you're right!
We were there at MXON as well. VIP area had plenty good to it and some bad. We attended Red Bud MXON in 22 so that is what I can compare it to. First, yes, it is worth it. It was better viewing and better pits than Red Bud. The team rigs are impressive in the EU. The VIP area had perfect viewing and was well cared for with lots of food and drink. Yes, it did appear that the general admission people had to wait in long lines for restrooms but VIP had our own. The noise level on the hillside never dies down and is loud the whole weekend. (we were far away thank god) Traffic had some good and some bad. We took a taxi in and out mostly without delays really. The town of Winchester is cool! We would go back certainly. I do think they can improve and should as all motocross tracks need to do better at those basic things such as restrooms, traffic, food, and safety. Oh and in the US at Red Bud MXON the VIP tent and food was very poor! This VIP the past weekend was much better and cheaper than Red Bud by about 50%.
after learning the hard way in 2006 , which was a free for all, but pretty entertaining watching campervans going off peiste booting it up a hill in field ,which some succeeded and some failed , in 2017 we parked in a quiet side road outside and rode our pushbikes,in and out in 5 mins.
TBF ,although no doubt they could improve the traffic management , its to be expected, as the venue is not purpose built for these type of events
youre probably better of hanging about an hour and let it sort itself out
the GPs are generally not to bad
I've got a German friend who went to the 2006 des Nations at Matterley, and they turned up in a big black bus with a generator and little colour printer in the back. One guy paid to get in, came back with the wristband etc, and then they made copies that they just waved at the security who couldn't gaf. Apparently they did it at the GPs too 😄
