Here’s the thing that mx fans don’t understand, the vast majority of mx/sx riders are not good athletes.

Just because you’re in great shape doesn’t mean you’re athletic. A 350 lb line man in the NFL is a way better athlete than 99.99% of top riders. Most of the women in the WNBA are better athletes than most riders.

RC was a great motorcycle rider, but would get absolutely smashed in any athletic event.

Bro… wtf did you just say?

I really don’t think you understand the athleticism of the average nfl lineman.

No, they wouldn’t last on a beat track, but that endurance athletes, different than what the list is about.

However this list also tends to eschew those traditional metrics by listing several golfers, as well as Lewis Hamilton, Michael Schumacher and Jimmy Johnson.

My point is this, most guys that post here think that pros are phenomenal athletes, they’re not. Some are phenomenal endurance athletes, which imo is different.  The butt hurt that causes is laughable.

For the sake of argument, how can you say that a 350 lbs line man in the NFL is a way better athlete than 99.99% of top riders. A 350 lbs would get absolutely smash in just about any athletic event by any top pro-riders everyday of the week, except sports where weight is a massive advantage like fighting, lifting and weight throwing. He wouldn't stand a chance in anything that requires running, jumping and quick changing of directions.

Also, because the skillset you have developped for your sport doesn't translate well to other sport doesn't mean you are not a great athlete, unless you take cross-performing as a metric. Take any top athletes from stick and ball sport and put them on a beatdown national track and they will look like absolute squirell, just like RC would look totally out of place if you put him on the court of an NBA game when he was in his best shape.

5.4 40 is terrible when you’ve been working on your sport since middle school.
JMart runs a 15 5k as am MXer. Would probably do well in cycling as well.
How you define athleticism is your issue. Can Bolt maintain a HR of 180 for 30-60 min?
Who has a higher lactate threshold. Bolt or sexton? Idk and I bet you don’t either.

The slow lineman are in the 5:30 range. I’d say that pretty damn fast for a 350 pound man that benches 375 pounds.

I agree Martin, and Tomac both are incredible endurance athletes, they’d both probably do well in cycling.

Sexton will never be able to run or jump like Bolt, but I’d bet a million dollars Bolt could  train to get his heart rate there.

Wtf do you think marathon winners are?? GREAT ATHLETES! Idk why you think elite stamina and cardiovascular performance aren't athletic traits but they are. So are elite reflexes and hand-eye coordination which pro racers absolutely have (Lewis Hamilton is #19 on the list for fuck's sake...Michael Schumacher is #29)

Your argument makes no sense whatsoever

Yeah, I think we all get what you're saying.

This post is about ESPN's list, however, which includes golfers and car drivers. If they're being counted as "athletes" by ESPN, I'd think motocross racers would qualify.

Clearly you have never paid aattention to swimming. Phelps topping this list is 100% accurate.

The fact there is no one from moto on this list, is a shame.

lol again how do you define top athlete? Phlelps killed it during his time. Destroyed it. 3 times over 12 years.

Messi destroyed soccer records year after year for 10+ years. 60 + games a season.

Peaking at the right time is incredible. Peaking day in and day out for 10+ years… tell me you know nothing about sports.

Most people don’t look at long distance runners as great athletes, they look at them as guys who run a lot.

I don’t think Hamilton or Schumacher should be on a list of great athletes either. They’re fit for sure, but not athletic.

Here’s the thing, if the majority of Americans put in the work, they could be every bit as fit as a guy like Deegan, but they will never run a 4:3 40, or dunk a basketball.

Yes, there are some outliers, JMart, and Eli that are just cardio freaks, and maybe there is more guys like RJ Hampshire who is actually a decent athlete, but most are just average guys who are fast on a motorcycle.

They gave Ryan Dungey a Wheaties box.  If you eat your Wheaties doesn’t that mean something about your level of sports badass?  He’s even standing on his bike and riding it like that girl on YouTube from France lezitow can do.  I thought they’d consider that top 100 worthy.  Some may make the list as sports heroes or good guys as fan favorites.  Popularity scores but Brady is a pretty boy whiner cheater even if he won he and the juiced steroid guys should get disqualified.  There are other players that sacrificed more than just a quarterback.  Lebron seems like more of an athlete than Shaq and Kobe goes ahead of him as a student of the game and not just a big man post up.  I can see Jeter there putting up big career numbers. Pastrana contributed a lot and would be my pic to represent moto too as a multi sport special feature if they count car racing.  He even did big buck.  Ambassador list.  Golf is a swing sport taking certain skills at an elite level but I wouldn’t put stuff like chess on there as a last resort with no physical activity.  I was surprised Ronaldo didn’t score higher as claimed one of the best but I don’t follow soccer.  The best physical athlete for that sport and most medal theory goes to Phelps but I like the hero idea of Biles going big and performing when needed.  McGrath was 90’s to 2000 and could have made the list if he started later with his popularity and record.

Bro, you're gonna need to define what you view what an athlete is because all you keep doing is pointing to stick and ball sports as the only people that could possibly be athletic.

That first paragraph is one of the more ignorant statements I've seen on this forum. The top marathon runners have endurance that regular people could never achieve no matter how much they trained. They are athletic freaks. You really don't have a clue what you're talking about dude

The way I read it, just big guys that can run and jump. I wonder if he doesn't feel some kinda way for Big Lenny... Not that there's anything wrong with that. I just doubt that Big reciprocates.

On a serious note. Nobody in the NBA ever bragged on Larry Bird's 'athleticism'. But somehow, he got the work done.

ESPN does not care at all about Supercross/Motocross, or most other non-stick and ball sport for that matter.

Objectively, a guy like Carmichael would be top 10 at the minimum. He is basically the undisputed GOAT of his sport, and 95% of his success came in the 21st century. But I wouldn't expect ESPN to recognize anyone from our sport on a list like this, except MAYBE Pastrana, just because his influence broke into the mainstream a bit.

Yup. Ricky is literally the person  that the term GOAT was created for. Matt Walker read an article that called Ricky the “Greatest Of All Time” and he saw GOAT so started calling him the goat. 20 years later that term is used everywhere.

This. I stopped scrolling after i saw that.

But to be fair, i think these lists are made in purpose like this so that they generate clicks and buzz. That is why you can't take it seriously in any manner.

It's ridiculous.  Any discussion of the greatest athletes of the 21st century - if the metric is purely performance overall, not performance within a particular demographic - would not include a single women.

For example: The Australian women's football team (soccer) went down 7-0 to a Newcastle Jets male under-15 side.

'Every year, in pretty much every athletic event, men break the women’s world record thousands of times. The fastest time ever run by Allyson
Felix, the women’s 400-metre Olympic champion, is beaten more than 15,000 times each year by men and boys'.

In interviews Serena Williams said herself that people (specially woke feminists) are delusional if they think women have any slight chance against men. There was a video going around a couple years ago where a feminist was saying most women sports are fairly competitive and some men would struggle against Serena for example. Serena responded to that with "Andy Murray would beat me 6:0 6:0 in 5 to 6 minutes, women's and men's tennis are two different sports".

It's funny, the only people that really believe that are people that never did any sports themselves.

Also didn't want to offend anyone by putting up a ESPN link. Obviously that list is more like a meme. Just thought it could encourage to some fun discussions. Tongue

You used the perfect word, sports hero’s. You can be bad ass at a particular sport, but not be athletic. I’m buddies with a guy who was on the PBA tour, has multiple 300 games, not an athletic bone in his body, but he’s fit. John Force is in his 70s and still competitive at his “sport”, but he’s no athlete.

I’d say that all QBs are pretty athletic, but only two or three of them are great athletes. I think Lebron, as much as I dislike him is a great athlete, but I think Kobe was better.

I agree with pretty much everything you’re saying. I think if you’re going to have a list like this, it has to say greatest sports hero’s, not the best athletes, 2 different thing.

So are elite reflexes and hand-eye coordination which pro racers absolutely have (Lewis Hamilton is #19 on the list for fuck's sake...Michael Schumacher is #29)

Your argument makes no sense whatsoever

I don’t think Hamilton or Schumacher should be on a list of great athletes either. They’re fit for sure, but not athletic.

Here’s the thing, if the majority of Americans put in the work, they could be every bit as fit as a guy like Deegan, but they will never run a 4:3 40, or dunk a basketball.

Yes, there are some outliers, JMart, and Eli that are just cardio freaks, and maybe there is more guys like RJ Hampshire who is actually a decent athlete, but most are just average guys who are fast on a motorcycle.

Soccer, great athletes. Baseball, a lot of great athletes. Football, a lot of great athletes. Basketball, all great athletes. Top track and field, all great athletes.

Motocross, guy in really good shape.

Define sport, first. What makes basketball a sport and not a game? Where does motocross land on your scale? Secondly, define athlete. You say soccer players are athletes. Messi is 5'7". He is the best that ever did it. Do you think he can dunk a basketball? Dustin Johnson can dunk a basketball. Is he a better athlete than Messi? Than Sexton?

Personally I think you're a troll. And a dang good one at that!

That first paragraph is one of the more ignorant statements I've seen on this forum. The top marathon runners have endurance that regular people could never achieve no matter how much they trained. They are athletic freaks. You really don't have a clue what you're talking about dude

Anyone can be a runner if they want is one point but then only certain people can be winning level and it’s not about being a talented athlete always since a lot of guys from Kenya win marathons kind of like how Phelps has a freak body that allows him to swim like a fish.

They should compare sports on skill and not body anatomy bred to be a champ.

Basketball could be another anatomy genetics game.  If you are 7 feet tall chances are they may ask you to play and jump shot close to the basket over others or just dunk all the time.  They may not be so great unless they have the height advantage.

RC is on the same level as Michel Jordan and Tiger Woods IMO. RC was a beast.
