Gypsy vs Pulp

I don’t wanna make this a thing, but as a fan that loves podcasts, I notice, there are certain riders that won’t go on Pulp, but do Gypsy and vice-versa..

Are these becoming the two go-to podcasts for riders and are they choosing a lane?

For what it’s worth, I’m Pulp Nation personally, but when Gypsy has a good guest, I’ll have a listen, Gypsy isn’t my style really, a little too much “ fuuuck yeah broooo” But riders obviously like and respect him because he is constantly getting amazing guests, the latest forkner interview is fantastic if you havent listened..

not trying to start or fuel any beef or choosing sides, it’s just interesting that riders definitely seem to be choosing a side..

I use to love pulp but recently I can understand why riders do not like Steve. He just comes off as a pompous ass.

Show quality as dramatically went downhill as well. Just as soon as something interesting gets brought by a cohost or guest he interrupts with a sponsor read.

my personal opinion their in separate lanes , wht Steve do with pulp is like how me and a lot others do on utube normally, whether it’s bout sports , music , movie reviews , politics etc…. wht Jason do at Gypsy is wht u see Shannon sharpe do with the club Shay Shay , really a sit down convo type podcast setting with tht said guest. I like both styles but thts just me

I just can’t handle the parasocialism from Gypsy. It’s hard to watch. You can tell the “best friend” energy is not reciprocated by the top riders he tries so hard to convince us he’s best friends with. At least with Steve he keeps it respectably level with riders he’s not close with.

Gypsy for me. Steve has come like a pompous douchebag most every time I’ve tried to listen to him.

While I don’t disagree, he continues to get top tier riders on his podcast, so he must be doing something right..

In the last year I have really become a big fan of Gypsy Tales. I listen to both and enjoy them both.

I would imagine Steve probably has a good bit more respect for Jase these days, as he should.

What blows my mind is the sponsors that pay him dude is living lavish. So many sponsors and racer x behind him he’s scared to step on peoples toes and sometime dances around controversial stuff that others are willing to talk about because they don’t have all the sponsors up there ass.

It's a sad state of affairs when these are two of the most prominent "media members"  in our beloved sport.

Yes, I completely agree, and I know he knows way more than he gives away on the shows..

But he was the first to break Eli to Star.. so there is that..

I think it just comes down to clicks vs how much are u willing to piss off ur Moto bro industry friends..

I really dislike Steve matthes. He has some pretty bad takes as well.

I don’t mind the gypsytales dude. He was kind of weird to me at first but I’ve grown to like him fine. It helps that the guys he gets on there seem to like him as well.

big thing I look at is if I met either one of the guys in person which one do you think would be nicer…. Lmfao. Should be pretty obvious.

Pulp over Gypsy usually. I also can't stand the "DUDE, BRO, Law-ike" every 5 seconds. But I also think Pulp has gone downhill ever since Steve decided that an American motocross racer waving an American flag on the podium of an American MX National after he won it, looked bad in his eyes. Said the Canadian living in the freest country on planet earth where he's lived for decades..

I feel bad for guests who call into Pulp sometimes. Steve is a tough host…if a cricket chirps in the background, then you don’t stand a chance of remaining on the call. That part is pretty rough lol. But I like them both. Gypsy bros down too much for me but I really respect the growth of his show and is intellectual questions.

They should join forces into one show:

"The Plump Gypsy's Tales"

All this talk so far and no mention of ratings… or however the fok podcasts are scored. While I am sure part of their appeal to certain racers has to do with personality, the smart money is going to showcase their “brand” on the show with the biggest reach/audience.

Does anyone know how these shows rate?

I like both. Gypsy’s podcasts are a little long for my free time. I can understand the comments about Steve, but I feel like JT and Weege keep things level most of the time.

+1 for the SML crew as well. They’re usually my go to, for better or worse.

One talks about jiu jitsu constantly, the other one has to mention multiple times that he was a factory mechanic. Still doesn't change the fact that both provide good content honestly.

Gypsy has definitely stepped it up and there is a reason he has almost every big name on his podcast, people like the vibe and the conversation style just works for that. Yeah, maybe less "sick bro fuck" here n there, but it could be a lot worse.

Pulp has great co-hosts sometimes and also nice guests, but a lot of breaks and sponsor talk. I also consume pulp content but I usually skip to the interviews. The only time I watch full Pulp shows is when DV or Blair are there. I don't find myself skipping through Gypsy podcasts, and the guests lately have been top notch.

i feel it just depends on wht ur looking for , if ur looking for news breaking , predictions /  “bench racing” , race breakdowns & reviews then u go to pulp , if u want to hear about life after racing , or opinions of the current landscape of the sport etc…. then u check out gyspy  tales & see wht guest he had on , everybody is not going to appeal to everyone so just pick a podcaster or a media outlet tht u identify with. as far as Steve & his take on haiden goes 😂😂 I mean thts his opinion 🤷🏾‍♂️

I don't consume either other than clips that get posted here, but I don't get the impression they are competing with one another. Does Steve do one-on-one long-form interviews? Seems like Gypsy Tales and Whiskey Throttle would be a more relevant comparison.

Yes, Matthes has done hundreds of long form, one on one interviews for the last decade.  He's the originator of it.  Most the folks Ping has on...Matthes has already had on years ago.

If you search "Steve Matthes Show Podcast" it will pull them up, chances are if someone is historically relevant to the sport he has done one with them at some point other than the few folks who have a beef with him for calling it as he sees it.

I don't do either.

I can't stomach Gypsy and  his "fuck - sick - bro" speak.

Matthes isn't anywhere close to what he was when he started out, he's gone in the shitter.         I'll only tune in to a segment if there's a particular rider being interviewed.

I listen to both of them, but i just listen to Gypsy when he has a guest on that im interested in.

He often get them to speak out more and instead of a 15min phone call we get a 1.5 hour plus of talk.

Each week i listen to all of Steves stuff, but they are 99% the same each time. Weege try to pamper the TV production, JT has some good takes and Steve have a shit ton of opinions until it goes against his sponsors like the claim gate that he were all in on the Blu cru/star/deegan corner.

But as soon as there is anything else where AMA shit the bed Steve is the first man to light a torch and go after them.

Steve does, under his "Steve Matthes Show" title. A lot of these interviews are very enjoyable as they are often with older legends he respects and prepares for, rather than his long form shows where he gets his hotdogging in and tries to be funny and "entertaining."

Five hours is a ton of time to fill so I understand his flagship "PulpMX Show" being presented as it is. I don't think he's a dick or bad guy as much as he's just leaning into his schtick of being crabby and arrogant. Giving 1000 hours of hot takes a year will result in some stinkers, I'm still a fan overall.

Big time. He's comes off like a real d-bag to me. I'm think it's just his personality and it doesn't bother me. It's just who he is. I like the shorter Pulp clips. I can't watch the whole show. To be fair, that goes for Gypsy too. I can listen to 3hr podcasts but for some reason not 3hr moto podcasts

I used to be a regular pulp listener.  Steve has gotten more douchy, and too many ads now.  Plus its 2 hours of content surrounded by 3 hours of crap.

Gypsy isn't great either.  He tries way too hard to be one of the cool guys.

misleading stat cause Gypsy is not pure moto based , he’s connected to moto yea but he’s not solely on moto therefore he have a bigger audience or ppl searching for him for different stuff / selection of guest tht he has come in , Steve & pulp is strictly moto based so Steve only getting 1 targeted demographic / audience
