I don't understand why there is so much emphasis on overall wins or results during the outdoor season. Both motos count towards championship points separately, so it's as if it was two entirely different races. They talk about riders thinking about the overall during the race and maybe not pushing for a pass or something like that but that doesn't make sense to me. If you have the overall locked up running in second place, you should always still charge for first to get more points, right? It's portrayed like a 1-1 overall win is the same as a 1-2, but it's a difference of three points. Curious what others think.
Why so much emphasis on overall result in outdoors?

I think most guys do push as much as possible but it's not worth wadding up sometimes...plus I believe there's a bonus for overall.
The podium, bro
Factory guys get a win bonus or a podium bonus.
Maybe they're pushing extra hard to get that podium or the overall win for the team and the bonus and at that point they've taken huge risk well beyond their comfort zone already?
Everyone wants a bigger trophy.

I just think it’s trickled down from top 3 getting manufactures bonus money overall.
Bonus money, and overall is a win in the history books. Better to know you have the overall, than push and make a mistake. But for points you know you need, I'm sure most people would push to make the pass.
Also, overalls may help negotiate next contract as well, I'm assuming.
The whole point of a race is to win.
Right now it's just for a bonus and bragging rights and in the slim chance of a tie at the end of the year overalls become a tie breaker. Once upon a time points were awarded per your overall finish. That's what the sport was founded on. As it is now a 1 and a 2 are the same points as a 2 and a 1. To me that is wrong. If a rider wins the overall buy performing better in the second moto than the person they tied with there should be a points bonus for that imho.
Higher overall finish means more points, overall finish bonuses, racers race to win
Consistency is key.
I feel your point OP. Besides win bonuses and such I feel like the overall should be worth an extra few championship points.
Uhhh not necessarily more points, that was kinda the OPs whole point.
A 2-1 and a 1-2 get the same points but different overall finish.
Coolest trophy, win bonus, and they can say they won that day forever.
And the position...the step you end up on at that Over All Podium can be worth a solid six digits...or a mere 5 digits...
I'm jus' sayin'...
SHUT UP BOOMER!!!
Uh, actually...I agree with you and I'm pretty sure you're younger than me, too!

Because if there wasn’t then Chase legitimately beat Jett straight up and a lot of people aren’t ready for that conversation.
It's a fair question and the system is flawed to me. The overall winner should get an added points kicker in my opinion. Maybe an extra 3-5 points with each moto also paying points
The simple solution is to do the motos with olympic scoring and giving the same amount of points for the overall as SX 25-22-20....which I believe is how they did in the 70's but points were different.
