That race lauched the international carrers of himself, byrne and reed, and all those who have followed them from Australia.
Or picture from 1998 or 99 (again I think it was that year) where he rode a shop supported star yamaha after everyone had written him off, and he came out and won Aus the SX and MX championships
God speed Andrew, Ill always be a fan!
Leading the world in 2000...
The turning point in Australian motocross
It was a great day when i seen him in Adelaide for a round of SuperX, pitting out the back by himself out of a Van, I remember how i bumbled and bobbled my way to ask him for an Autograph.
I have been lucky enough to follow the Aus MX nationals the last two years, heading to every event and seeing him ride, and getting the chance to take photos of him. I breifly got to speak to Andrew at the last round at Canberra, again i was nervous just apporching him, but he was great and i organised to do an Interview, which we had planned to do on the weekend, i was going to get the chance to interview a racer i had admired for so long. we didnt get to do the interview on the saturday, put we were all good to go on Sunday after practice.
I still am finding it hard to belive what has happened, i had just posted his lap time from the lap before, and a few hours later we get the worse news i have ever recived at a race meeting. It still does not feel real, i know it is but i dont want to belive it.
My thoughts are with his Wife his daughter, his family and all of his close friends, He was an Australian sporting hero that will never be forgotten, he helped put Australian motocross on the map, and opened doors for many more Australian riders to get opportunities racing world GPs.
