Gee, I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that new governor is a corrupt leftist operative.

After re-reading the text of the article, I support this law.

"Arizona Senate Bill 1567 requires someone to possess a valid driver's license before operating these types of recreational vehicles on roads or highways maintained by the government. The bill further stipulates that the definition of "highway" under this license requirement "does not include routes designated for off-highway vehicle use."

In other words, "you can't drive your dad's UTV on the street." But you can drive one off-road.

It is legal in Arizona to license a side by side ATV for street use. (And any other off-road vehicle, as well.) This new law keeps Johhny Purple Koolaid from blasting through downtown Glendale in his dad's RZR to go get an innertube for his BMX bike at the bicycle shop.

Now, if the text of the law differs from what is reported in the article, then I'll re-assess my stance.

There's a little more to it than that.  In AZ, any road that the public can access with a car is a "road or highway" by definition.  This means that many dirt roads that people look at and think "that is offroad" are actually a public road and, therefore, require full license, registration, insurance, etc.   I know quite a few people who had their wife, gf, or kid get busted for riding a trail bike on a dirt road to connect trails.  This apples to most if not all dirt roads in National forests, State lands, etc.  basically everywhere anyone would naturally be going with an OHV.  Some of the National Forests near me have even started putting signs up to alert people to this.  They say something like "license, registration, and insurance required for all vehicles including OHV".

Yea I remember back in 1994 I had to take a jet ski class to drive our seado’s at lake Powell. I was 10, the class was literally just a vhs tape.

Unrelated, but lots of good VHS tapes were filmed on Lake Powell in the 90s.

Thank the quads and SxS with the big tires and ghetto blasters. Here in East Texas they have paddle tires and snorkels too.  Wouldn't surprise to see something like that in Texas in the future.

If that's what it says, then I'll eat some crow.  Seems fairly reasonable.

I see access shit and know that the industry does fuck all about it and lose my mind.

I still stand by that more should be done about access and land use by the industry, if we don't have anywhere to ride we don't have any reason to buy their shit and keep them in business.

Amazing the amount of people here that just jumped to conclusions in stead of actually reading and researching.

Not saying that at all but being outraged and gas lighting yourself over something you haven’t even taken the time to understand is quite the showing of intelligence.

Agreed. The OEM's should focus less on paying guys millions to win races and more on making riding accessible for their customer base. Seems like every year we lose more and more riding areas. Some of those areas being spots where the OEM's million dollar guy would practice on! How do the factories not worry about this? The industry can't survive on private facilities. But I'm sure their hands are tied as well. I don't know what the solution is. I feel for you guys in AZ. I really hope some more tracks open up out there for you guys.

So riders aren’t making enough money but they are also making too much because the OEM’s could spend it on lobbying for riding areas.

I stand behind what I said that the industry doesn't do fuck all to protect riding areas, sorry that I got it wrong on this issue by jumping to conclusions.

Can you prove me wrong that major players in the industry are working to keep riding areas open so we have a reason to buy their shit?

What "why" do I need to understand?

Do you understand that if we continue to lose riding areas and don't have anywhere to ride, that folks won't have a reason to buy your shit and eventually your company will just be a memory?

I get the feeling you are just talking out your ass. You don’t know if what you are saying is true or not.

-again with 2 minutes of research here is a list of companies that are members of the motorcycle industry council that follow, track and lobby for legislation to protect our rights to ride. https://www.mic.org/#/mic-members
Who do you see on that list?

oh just all the OEM’s. And numerous other players in the industry.

Pretty sure we don't have such a safety requirement for kids over here in Safetyfornia. Is Safetyzonia trying to out-Safetyfornia us??

The industry does an amazing job of protecting our right to ride, it's unbelievable to time and effort they put in to keep this sport alive.  All the riding areas and access closing is just a myth.

Not what I said at all but, sure..

When the last public track in your state closes it's doors and the last public riding area is shut down by the Government, what incentive will you have to go out and buy a new bike? But it's all good, Honda has the Lawrence brothers and KTM has Sexton who all have access to private tracks. Mortals like us can fend for ourselves I guess, right? All I meant by my previous post is that it would be cool to see manufacturers pitch in at the local level. But at the same time, I get why they don't.

Carry on

The irony is, that his home state of Utah has shit that is constantly and currently under attack and he thinks the MIC is gonna save it.....I'm sure they'll get to that right after they get done lining their pockets from the AIM Expo.

It’s not about winning or losing it’s about having a fucking clue.  The fact is all the people you said weren’t fighting for us are, are they always successful? No.
This sort of stuff isn’t exactly front page news and it seems unless something is literally shoved in front of you it’s not happening or isn’t real.

and to go back to the bill being discussed in this thread it’s not even about closing a currently open riding area.

I’m sure they are trying, which was your whole point they aren’t trying. Are they always successful? No but that doesn’t mean they aren’t trying.

Why dont you do some grassroots organizing and help lobby to keep riding areas open that you seem to think everyone else should do for you.

Yea you don’t have a clue. Which has been pointed out in this thread. You were wrong at almost every turn.

I never said MIC was our savior. I just said they and all the manufacturers and companies you claim aren’t fighting for us are.

I'm pretty familiar with MIC, I don't think they actually fight for us as much as you want to think they do.

But it's understandable that you would think that since you hadn't heard of them until 15 minutes ago when you were desperately googling anything and everything you could to try to prove me wrong.

Maybe not directly, but this is a step towards it. You and I both know not everyone will follow this and eventually some sort of big accident will happen caused by someone that didn't take the safety course and that will lead to talks of shutting areas off. Stuff like this is just the beginning and we all need to see and acknowledge that. We give them an inch and they eventually take a mile. Us in California have seen it first hand in many instances.

Do you think without this bill that same accident couldn't happen and the same thing won't be discussed?

trying to enhance safety especially for people new to dirt bikes, ATVs, and SxS is not a bad thing.  sure their will be some bad apples but it will benefit a lot of people that actually take it to heart and could be the difference between a fun day on the trail and a tragedy.
