I believe reaction time begins to decline in your mid to late 20s

"Motocross years" are not a thing. Plenty of elite level athletes in their 30s in sports more physically demanding than Motocross

If that were true why do we not see any retired ultra runners racing MX?

The point being made is that you need to be fit to participate in any sport at a professional level. It’s weird how defensive people get on here unless you say motocross is the most physically demanding sport on the planet and riders are far fitter than any other type of athlete. We all ride dirt bikes. We know it’s hard. Tomac is not over the hill at 30

I’m not taking anything away from playing professional hockey, because they are gnarly. But let’s be real here…

Stick and ball sports have breaks in between the games, Motocross/ SX gets no breaks while competing a moto. Heart rate is high throughout the entire race.
I have no idea what NHL players do for training, besides skate, but I’d be willing to bet they do not put in near the effort as a top racer. Maybe I’m wrong ?

An NHL player has strong legs from skating and they need to be physically fit to be able to compete at that high level, but the ice is always smooth.
Motocross riders have to man handle 200lb motorcycles with 60+ HP on tracks that are brutally rough and they require far more focus to keep from getting hurt in a crash.
Hockey players fall 3’ onto the ice, which is not soft, but motocross riders get thrown to the ground violently at speed and sometimes get rag dolled.
How many broken bones/ injuries do NHL players get in their careers ? They have a lot better chance of playing past 30 years old than motocross riders, but the motocross riders start their pro careers later than NHL players for the most part.

I repeat… I’m not saying that NHL players are not fit/ strong, but to seriously compare the two is a stretch in my opinion

Swimming, Skiing, MMA/Grappling/Boxing, Rugby or distance running are also up their (specially endurance wise) on the amateur level, but professional MX riders are freaks man, specially when it comes to longterm damage and injuries. You tell people that have no clue about MX what riders like Forkner, Roczen, Jmart, Herlings etc went through in their careers and they wouldn't believe it.

I still wouldn't call MX riders the "fittest" in the world, but definitely amongst the thoughest, if that makes sense. Also the difference between amateur MX and professional is night n day, even between riders that just qualify for a race and the absolute top guys.

And thanks for specifically pointing out "professional motocross".

AGAIN, I'm not taking anything away from any of these sports (or any other sports for that matter), but most of them require a much shorter period of intensity while competing, vs racing moto.
As far as being the fittest of all sports, I’d have to agree with you. But all in all, motocross is a tough way to make a living.
Most, with the exception of Dungey and a couple others, the amount of injuries that a motocross rider gets during his career, far outweighs any other sport that I’m aware of.

I don’t think any of them will be in a rush to get back to be honest , webbs not in to outdoors , Kenny might do a couple if he fancy’s it and can’t see tomac having much Intrest in coming back for a couple of rounds and risking his last sx season

Tomac is too old to be a top 5 contender after missing this much time due to injury. He may get a random top 5, but his MX winning days are likely over. If he can get healthy and be 100% thru SX and roll into MX next year, he may pull off a podium in MX. If he wins again, it will be in SX.

you think he's going to be slower than anderson, barcia, craig, stewart, plessinger, cooper, webb, etc?  Realistically I have chase, lawrence and lawrence in front of him.  So hell either be on the podium or 4th at worst.

The BRAIN of a 30yr old vs. a 20yr old...there's a big difference.

Ultra running and mx....the serious injury factor is WAY HIGHER in pro mx.

This was a BIG setback for Eli. Too bad as he was just getting going. More time off the bike and another injury when you are old is not good.

It seems this is how all these guys end up. Age makes you break easier and heal slower. Not counting the mental aspect.

Kenny probably didn't mind the break. For sure Webb doesn't mind the break. Smile

I don't believe that for 1 second about Kenny..I think he would like a crack at the Lawrence brothers outdoors and healthy.....

Yes, Cooper will be faster than tomac next year. Then if turd boy deegs moves up, he probably will be too. Plessinger hasnt missed any time, so yes, he could be faster. Top 5 will be the best Eli can hope for in 2025.Not like thats a bad thing though.

I’ve been to one kings game and I’ve watched one game during the playoffs. It’s just not my thing. I can appreciate the game and while I can see how much effort it takes to keep up the intensity, racing from gate drop, to checkered flag is just a different animal.

Some of the takes in here are blithering and I can tell most of you have never actually been athletes at a high level.

imo these young talent got to push the old talent out & force these team managers hand but they ain’t doing it , future investment wise yea I would go with j coop cause I see his ceiling of races wins & overalls but for somebody like ELI 🤔 he ain’t doing enuff to force him out

31 is prime for a lot of sports. I think in moto it comes down to how much these dudes want to risk it later on. Tomac has the ability to have few more prime years if he avoids injury and really wants it. Emphasis on the last part.
