There's a great interview in the latest issue of MOTO magazine with Chad Reed and James Stewart by Frank Hoppen.
What comes across is their dislike for each other, but during the Stewart interview Frank asks James if he will be racing the nationals this year.
He says no, basically because Yamaha only support SM Team for the SX rounds and if they raced the nationals, they would have to spend their own money.
James says they may do a few of the local west coast races but cant afford to go to the east coast rounds as it would be far too expensive!

Gimme a break James!, when your nailing down a reported 7/8 Million $ a year from your sponsors, spending a little of that money to get your only title of this year, please your sponsors and fans would seem a good investment.
Kinda ironic that the GP teams are now having to pay to travel half way around the world to compete at Glen Helen GP, yet James can't afford to get out to the East Coast!

I assume it`s not that easy. It`s not only about him, there is a team behind him.

He's done it, perfect season and all. Doesn't feel the need to do it anymore and doesn't have to.

Funny, he's on record saying he wants to race them.

Yes, I get your logic that he shouldn't have to do it on his own dime, but he knowingly signed the contract that stated SX only. And this is no 9-5 normal job, in a job like this where you rely on a good reputation with sponsors/fans, to just not race while in your prime against what would be his biggest rival (RV) outdoors besides carmichael just leaves a bad taste in many peoples mouths. Not to bring RC in again, but how would have everyone reacted if RC decided to stop racing right when stewart moved up? And everyone know there is no way that's possible, he enjoyed racing too much.

He has obligations to sponsors and his team. If the team doesn't have the support to race the Nationals, they're not going to do it - If you add it up, the cost to race the Nationals would put the team into the red for the year (assuming they're not going in the red anyway). Why would they do that?

For the Nationals to attract all the top guys, they have to be important enough to sponsors so the teams can get the support to do it. Apparently, they aren't.

Also, as others have pointed out, James has 3 National championships and a perfect season in the can - titles that he broke a lot of bones and took a lot of risks to win. What's left to prove?

Let see, how many races did he ride this year so far? Lets take his sponser Answer for an example, do you think they are happy they paid a lot of cash for 3 races, was that a good ROI? He will lose more money in contract negoatiations next year than if he spends some out of pocket cash to win a outdoor title. Sponsers want return on investment, not some guy hurt and sitting all year long. Answer has an advertisement on vital say congrats to James for winning A1, don't you think they would rather that say congrats on an sx or outdoor title. He will lose more money over the long run by not competeing in the outdoors. Who wants to spend a ton of money for a guy to sit on his couch, If they do then where is my check!

When did RC race out of pocket to lose money in pro racing?

You either love this sport and will spend your own money to do it or you don't and won't. James might have loved it at one point but it obviously has become just a job to him. While that is sad, does it really matter? This should serve as a reminder to people that think they would love to be factory stars or work in the industry. No matter what you do or how much you love it, it is still a job in the end result. "We" might not be able to understand it because it is what we all love to do and we have a burning desire to do it to the best of our ability but to the guys who have done it since they were little kids and been pushed and prodded to "make it" their whole lives it may not be fun for some of them anymore. I.E. it has become just a job and you wouldn't do your job for a loss either.

What makes you think all of the other sponsors of L&M Racing are going to cough up the additional funds for the team to make all the Nationals?

It's not like the team rig sat idle throughout the SX season, it was on the road and at every race every week, and so far has consistently been a front runner and/or on the podium.

So, who's to pay for all of this unplanned, over budget, additional expense?

I totally agree, he should go race them all, even if most of the financing comes from his company JSE.
His contract with SM is over this year, knowing that he is on a SX-only deal, he must be unemployed shortly after Vegas SX. So, if he wants to go race the outdoors, I am sure there would be a good number of sponsors following him.

Despite strong TV presence thanks to his Fuel show (that's a bit too staged at times, but all reality TV show seem to be like that - except the awesomeness Nitro Circus which is just about trying crazy things and Inside The Outdoors), James is not really giving his main big-paying sponsors the necessary ROI on exposure for the year. If he doesn't race the Outdoors, he is going to have a year without title, not good for the title of the "fastest man in the world".

If James Stewart decides to go "grass roots" for the Outdoors, partly on his own dime and mostly on his sponsors budget, with 1 or 2 Sprinter vans and his motorhome, there is no doubt in my mind that he would be one of the 3 or 4 very strong title contenders and most probably win the series. If he did that, his popularity would shoot through the roof and he would gain the respect and admiration of all across the MX world. He'd be the Emperor of MX.

Yes, I understand the comments saying "why should he go on his own money and pay to race" but this isn't about dollars, we all know that Nike, Red Bull, Tucker Rocky, would cover a lot of the expenses and James would not be cleaned poor at the end of the season. This is not about the money, it's about his legacy, it's about his name in the history of MX.
James, go racing this Summer, for MX's sake!

I have an idea. Maybe he could sell one of those stupid Ferrari's, take out an insurance policy like Reedy and race? Hmm...there is a million ways he could race if he wanted. His excuses are bullshit but I don't care anymore. If he doesn't want to race thats his choice but don't cry around making up excuses. Just own it...I want to party and have fun I'll be back for SX.

Think of it like this - I love my job, but it involves a lot of travel; if my company told me they still needed me to go to power plants all over America but they weren't going to cover my travel expenses, would I still go and pay my own way? Whether I love it or not, I wouldn't pay for plane tickets, rent cars and hotel rooms out of my own pocket. I guess I could afford it, but I wouldn't do it. It's not a matter of whether I love to do it or not - it's my profession, and if I have to support it out of my own pocket, then it's no longer a profession. Those of us who go out and ride are in a whole different game than those who race for a living (in more ways than one).
