i want to hear jeff spencer stories. and malcolm mccassie
Rex Staten and the crescent wrench
The first two that come to my mind are:
Alessi's shining a laser pointer on racers' eyes on the starting gate
Kevin Walker setting up a go pro to film children changing
I don’t think that’s what he’s looking for, but it was a perfect opportunity.

Here is a memory...It was either 83, 84 or 85 at High Point. A non qualifier 125 guy decided to suit up and wait in the back woods. He pulled out in front with the leaders (I think it was Lechien and maybe O'Mara) and ripped a lap. I don't believe he was caught, but hunted by the AMA for years.
3 digit RM125cc. Nicknamed "Brain Damage", from Chester County PA. Pulled out of the woods with the leaders.
When Chicken didn’t show up to the Japanese Team Kawasaki photo shoot so they used a cardboard cutout of him with team instead.
Rumor has it Ryan Dungey was caught riding in his birthday suit and photographic evidence exists.
Said photos were reportedly sold to a magazine for publication.
Absolutely salacious.
1981 500 USGP - Team Honda's Chuck Sun getting locked in his hotel room by Marty Moates and the delay causes Sun to be stuck in miles of traffic heading towards Carlsbad Raceway. Chuck acts quickly by riding his practice bike thought heavy traffic arriving in time to join the required practice session . . . Sun's sweet revenge by winning the USGP!
Jeff - someone who fast riders made look good, at best he was a man friend with zero actual knowledge on performance related matters.
Every Jim Holly story ever told 😂
Back in the 1980s, a certain European manufacturer* allegedly arranging for one of Andre Malherbe's RC500s to be 'unofficially borrowed' (AKA stolen) so they could take a good look inside the engine to learn the secrets of making big power, before returning it to the mechanic's house.
I've heard this from a few different people over the years.
*not KTM
How did he keep getting gigs?
Wardy and Stanton would beg to differ.
Dood racing sx with a pink bunny suit or something...
How would you lock someone in a hotel room?
Heard Mike Craig and Larry Ward tell some stories that would make a porn star blush.
Amazed they're both still among the living.
Same way many of these "trainers" nowadays do also. Bullshit baffles the mind.
Pit Row
There's a good story in Kurt Nicolls' book about when he lost the Kawasaki 500 GP ride to Dave Thorpe. Kawi asked him to give Thorpe his bikes at the end of the year so he could get practicing before his new bikes arrived, so he changed all the jetting and suspension valving so the things were pretty much unrideable, then handed them over. Funnily enough it set the tone for Thorpes' whole time on Kawasaki..
Back then you could probably put pressure on the door and insert wedges between the door and jamb that would prevent the knob from turning. We used to "penny lock" guys in their dorm rooms like this. Two guys would put pressure on the door... you'd jam 2-3 pennies in above and below the lock. Then we'd... uh... they'd.... slide an LP album cover full of shaving cream just under the door and knock. When the victim rattled the knob, you'd stomp on the cover and blow shaving cream all over the place. Grab the album and run. Victim would have to exit thru the bathroom which, if you had time, you could ALSO penny lock, forcing them to exit thru a window.
Ron Lechien told me a pretty mild story that seems to confirm a lot of other ones about him. Out of respect, I won't go into details, but it was pretty rock and roll.
I thought of this too. The Alessi brother and the laser pointer was almost unbelievable but he admitted to it.
Well, it's not respect for them that keeps me from repeating it - it's more out of concern I'd be in violation of some sort of law regarding illicit online content and have some guys in black SUVs, black suits and mirrored Ray-Bans pay me a visit... that I never return from.
That, and general good taste.
