My typical day at the track just changed forever.

Last year a typical non race day at the track consisted of me starting with a 3 lap warm up, then break, 4 or 5 laps, break, 5 laps, break, hit some trails, break, 6 laps, break, etc. until I was content to call er a day.  And that's been a typical ride day for me for the last 20 years.

Well this winter I bought my kids (3 & 5) a pw50, yesterday was their first time out on it.

My 3 year old son loves watching dirtbike videos, and has been talking all winter about wanting to ride his motorbike, and my 5 year old daughter barely mentioned it at all.

When we got out, he wanted to ride first. Things got a little hairy for him,  he hit some tires lining the track and was terrified after that.  We'll try again with him next week somewhere maybe a bit more open and flat.

My daughter hopped on and rode lap after lap after lap,  I could hear her "wooo" and "weee" evertime she'd go over some bumps or little hill.  She literally rode for 2 1/2 - 3 hours straight.  Stopped only once to refuel, have a drink, and to say that her hands and arms hurt but she wanted to keep going.  2 minutes later she was at it again.

Haha man I could watch my videos of her riding at 2 mph around the little trail for hours.  I think I got a total of 5 laps in out of the 4 hours we were out there.  But it was still my favorite ride day to date.

I always wish my kids wants riding dirtbikes, but they are not. Now my son turn 18 and got YZ 125 and slowly get into moto life. So enjoy your small moto kids, great times.👏💪

Grandfather tip of the day (and in no way meant to criticize). Try wean them off those training wheels asap. They cause more problems than they are worth and create bad habits.

The part about your daughter hoot and holler made me laugh out loud. Can relate. As much as I love riding I love watching my son ride just as much and he’s almost 15 now. Enjoy it. Goes quick!

Love it!  My kids are the same way.  Mine started in trials then added in moto.  They'll just do laps till they run out of gas or I call them in.

Yep just get them to learn to ride a bicycle asap and then they won't need them anymore.

To the OP congratulations man. My son is 23 now but I got him started at 4 and I will never forget those days! Best days of my life for sure taking him to the track and watching him ride his pw. Soak it all in!!

Hell yeah brother. I get way more satisfaction watching my kids ride than doing so myself. And, it just gets better and better as they grow up. The best feeling in the world is hanging out at the end of the day covered in sweat and dirt talking about different lines on the track with my boy.

Another Grandpa for no training wheels. I never put them on bicycles either.
My son paddled his first bike around the house for a week or two, and then just started riding it… 2 months after his second birthday.

My daughter was just about as quick, but she was the older of the two.

We had a neighbor whose kids had them till they were about 8.

Why is criticize such a bad word? Constructive criticism is one of the best things you can do for someone.

Regarding the training wheels, the best thing about Striders and Stay-Cyc's is they teach kids to ride without training wheels.

At the end of the day the most important thing is you had a great time at the track with your kids.

So awesome. My little guy is about ready for his first 125, but he was on a PW50 ten years ago. He and my daughter have been riding ever since.

Thanks everyone, and ya I don't mind tips or criticism at all!  Gonna work harder now to get them training wheels off their bikes.

Lol was going to ask where you got the training wheels but now I'm afraid to. We had them on our Stacyc to help learn throttle control while not having to worry about balance but sounds like best to just rip off the band-aid.

Feel good story. Happy to hear you had such a great time with your kiddos. I went through this 25 years ago. Great memories. They go fast, but my son (he's 30 now) and I still ride together a few times a year.

A word about training wheels, Staycyc, and kids to anyone who will listen: find a balance bike first and put your kid on that. I put my son on a Strider when he was 3, and it took only a few weeks before he was gliding along, feet up, with perfect balance. He'd roll over bumps and uneven surfaces without the slightest bobble. Seriously, the hardest part about putting him on a bicycle was getting him to pedal the darn thing.
I wholeheartedly endorse a balance bike over any kind of training wheel setup; those just instill bad steering habits which take a while to overcome. If you have a Staycyc, take the battery out and let your kid use it like a push bike for a little while, then ease him/her into the power.
This isn't me trying to bash anyone who chose the training wheels, BTW. I'm just really convinced how much better the balance bike is.

Your son may have been terrified for the moment but watching his sister tear it up, I'm sure he'll be right there again real quick.

I'm in the same boat man! I got my gf's 7 y/o daughter into it recently. After a few rides on kids tracks, she's ridden the main track at the local track our last two outings and doing so good. Yesterday was her first day wearing riding boots and I also taught her how to shift (I was just putting it in 2nd and letting her go) and she mastered both, I can't believe how fast kids learn. And yes, we have to practically pry her off the bike at the end of the day! After her first ride day on the main track, she was complaining how sore she was the next few days...when was the last time you heard a kid say they were sore!?

When my Son was 4, Santa Claus brought him a new JR 50 with "Wheels 4 Tots" already installed, ready to roll.  My neighbor had the ajoining 60 acres connected to my property, that had a sandy, rolling hills section along the northen edge, lined with cottonwood trees that basically acted as a fence row.  He told me anytime he wanted to go play around to help ourselves.  And did we ever.....  For the next 2 years, that place was called "the boneyard", (My Son named it, after finding the remains of a deer the coyotes had cleaned up over the winter....), I never in my life had more fun than I did with him there on a motorcycle.  I even went as far as buying a cheap charcoal grill to leave there for good.  I'd just shove it under a treeline, lay it on it's side and forget it.  On ride days, load his ride, ice chest, gas can, few tools, lawn chair, and head to the market for our days worth of supplies.  He had a couple small tracks laid out, and while he was running around in small circles, I'd load the grill up with charcoal and cook up whatever was gonna feed the 2 of us for the day.  For damn near 2 seasons, that was our Moto life with no pressure, just fun.  We would laugh, talk about how fast he was going, split some Gatorade, and just be together.  Over time, we ruined 3 grills, burned up several hundred dollars in gas, ate way too many burgers and dogs, and years later, shared our first beer there when he became a Man.  Everytime a Supercross comes on now, I always think back to those riding days when we hurried home after a day at the boneyard, telling each other who was gonna win that night, either Pastrana, Windham, Stewart.....you get the idea.  It was so handy, so much fun.  Especially since all I had to do to get home was simply drive across the pasture!  I envy every Mom and Dad who are getting to do this now in their own way, I wish I could do it all over again in a second.  Enjoy it folks.......  It goes by fast.

My 3 year old just started riding his PW 2 weeks ago. We've been out both weekends since with last weekend being a complete mudder. He's doing awesome and I'm not sure who had more fun; him riding or me spectating. New perspective for sure!

A woman I worked with at my last job had a son around 8yo that would ride his CRF110 until it ran out of gas.
