Hey guys,

Does anyone know if it’s possible to swap a 6-speed out of a EXC or XC-F into an SXF?

Couldn't find much about it.

Only reason not simply buying a 6-Speed model is because I think it would be rad to put it into a 450 SX-F FE.

Thanks!

I’ve done this. A few years back it got a little more complicated/expansive. Someone will chime in the some more solid details…but…

Up until around 2021 I was able to just swap out and add some gears to make a 6 speed. Since then, the newer models required swapping out a lot more hardware…?

450Xcf is the same transmission as the SXF.

There was a write up in Thumpertalk about doing it on something like 17 to 19 or so and you can get this from Rocky Mountain. I believe there is a spacer that needs to changed out for a gear.

Correct.  On the older bikes you could just change the drum and replace a couple of spacers with gears.  On the new bikes, the shafts are different so you have to change all of the gears.

Not so much the speed, but when doing desert or trails I don’t want to ring it out in 5th. When I could be comfortably in 6th at a lower RPM.

That’s for the 2019, new motor since then.

If you’re able to do it, watch the steps between 4-5-6. I’ve got a 6 speed 500EXC motor in my XC-F, the 500 ratios are pretty strange. Tiny 4-5 jump, then a giant 5-6 jump. Still awesome having a 6 speed, but not as good as the 6 speed in my old RFS 450xc.

My buddy did it on his 22' 450 SX-F. It was a lot of work and very expensive! He basically put a complete EXC 6 speed in it. A former KTM group employee did it for him and I know from speaking to him, it was a real hair puller!

guys, the overall winning bike at last years Bala 1000 was a 2024 450XCF. It had a 6 speed from the 350xcf. Work was done by The Racers Edge in Simi Valley. I plan on doing mine this summer. I ride desert and really really need that extra gear.

The dirtbike test write up only covers the 16-18 models and the early early 2019 models before they switched to the pankl transmission. Rocky Mountain sells the kit for the pankl trannys. You have to replace a shaft and the 5th gear to add the 6th

May already have been said or known, the 450 xcf has a 5 speed. Not sure about the W.
