The US Army is trying to purchase the land that the Kahuku MX track is on and some of the gnarliest trails. The Mx community there is some of the best I’ve ever experienced in my life. The locals have poured everything in this place to make it one of the best places to ride. It’s truly an incredible place to ride if you’ve never been! These guys need all the help you can give them! I loved Kahuku when I was stationed there about 10 years ago - I always thought the land was military owned but it turns out it is state land leased to the military. I remember they would close the track down about a month a year for training exercises.
Here's the proposal: https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/D-2.pdf
This would be a tragedy and it would effectively kill motocross on Oahu. There's nothing else. I'm sure John DeSoto is fighting this as hard as he can. I hope the state doesn't give in to this greed to make short term profit by selling it, and believe me the military already has plenty of places to train in the islands.
Sorry to tell you Bud, but if the U.S. Government is looking to buy the land. Its already purchased..

Not sure what parcels named Kahuku (1) 5-8-002:002 and 5-9- 006:026 means, but there are numerous large ranges to the east of where the track and trails are.
Having trained up there many times the main access to the ranges is on the east end north of Kahuku town anyways, military vehicles aren't coming up the North Shore to access the land from the Sunset Beach access they go around.
It's a massive training area, I think setting aside a few hundred acres for continued public use is a no brainer, just my two cents.
Kahuku is moto heaven, when I lived there and learned to ride there in the mid 90's. Surfed v-land in the morning and rode Kahuku in the afternoon. I remember during the week it was closed for military training but we would drag our bikes under the gate to get in. Sorry I was young. But dang that would be horrible to lose that spot for the locals. Sending an email.
Yeah there was nothing like driving to and from the track and going past all the girls in bikinis hanging out at the North Shore. Not your average motocross track environment! My first race there RC, Emig and Renner came out for a ride day / autograph signing, and I even got to race with Sunny Garcia there a time or two. That place is magical.
Magical is a great word. Only thing I don't miss is the red clay staining your gear/clothing/bike.
Such great memories, I hope it gets saved and enjoyed for years to come !
Never wear a white riding outfit there!
I rode there in the 80s and 90s and was an HMA Board Member for five years. My understanding was that the land was always owned by the government and HMA leased the land for the club. John Desoto was the creator of this agreement. Might want to reach out to him and your Congressman for help.
To be more positive talk more positively.
Appreciate the info. I too enjoyed it for 5 short years while stationed there. Got to do some bad ass training there as well getting roped in on a black hawk and conducted 24hr assaults and then exfilling.
Lived behind Ted’s bakery and rode there every weekend possible and then would go straight to sunset beach. I’ve met some incredible people there and a lot of whom I still talk to today or see races every now and again.
I don’t live there anymore and have nothing to do with the HMA just trying to do whatever I can to help the people that treated me like their own in any way I can.
Just for some clarification, the zone in green is already owned by the army and out of bounds of the Mx park. The yellow with the red lines is the track. This is disgusting.
I am not anti-military but I am SICK AND TIRED of the military taking more land especially when it comes to land that we ride on.
Here in California in the High Dez we were told constantly we were destroying the Desert and had to fight to keep land that nobody was using only to have the military take the land to Bomb and drive Tanks which totally destroys the land.
We do an awful lot of training…how much do we really need? Maybe just stop fighting pointless, endless wars…that would be cool.
You need a new version of Super Hunky (RIP) and the Phantom Duck to fight like hell against this BS land grab.
In recent years the US Marine Corps wanted to extend the MCAGCC in 29 Palms, California to the west which would shut down the Johnson Valley OHV area. This is the venue for the King of the Hammers off road race and a very well known 4x4 rock crawling area. Fortunately, rather than shutting the area down the Corps has occasional closures for training while the rest of the the time it remains open for off road use.

While I was stationed on that base I frequently went up to Johnson Valley OHV to run my old Toyota crawler through the awesome trails.
Sometimes, the off road community wins these battles, but that won't happen if everyone just throws in the towel.
At a minimum, a situation like the MCAGCC and Johnson Valley OHV area should be looked at as a model for a fallback plan if there's no way to maintain the land for motocross and off road.

I’m prior military and I agree. There are entire bases that have been abandoned and are ghost towns or skeletons of themselves to this day. (Roosevelt Roads, Blytheville, Cecil Field, etc…) Utilize what you already own for training.
Orrrr, maybe the US government is just using its military arm as a pawn to seize more land. Just a thought.
Pretty sure there's some footage somewhere of an old news report where the reporter is standing in an area being "destroyed by dirt bikes" but you can hardly hear the reporter due to the tanks on exercise in the background.
Similar story over here; the Mildenhall track was faced with closure because of "noise" but the council couldn't get their noise meters to get an accurate reading due to the military aircraft taking off and landing at the air base over the road..
