Gotta be honest - I don't even care to look at the factory bikes nowadays since they're all thumpers.
The "works" 2-strokes just had a look about them - so lean, mean, minimalistic; almost vicious. The artwork that is a cone pipe, etc. They looked like race machines.
A thumper, with all its extra bulk filling up the engine compartment, looks bloated and automotive, not to mention the exhaust note is more painful than adrenaline-inducing.
Combine that with related track design/prep changes (indoor and out) to accommodate them and yeah, I also feel like it's a lesser product... and glad I too was around for the Golden Age of dirt bikes - both the design revolution and the competition.
Not to derail the thread but,I feel sorry for James. You can clearly see how that Yamaha shock started to overheat halfway through the races! It was a completely different animal once it got hot. Thanks for the videos.
I agree there goofy. I hate the sound they make starting , a 450 idling sound like small parts r gonna fly threw the engine. A 450 sounds horrible when they get on the gas . Special boring tracks sx & national hv to be built. We hv to groom the local track because 1 of the 450 riders in his 500k motor home is bitching. You know how they r , I own this buisness etc. Yeah go run that & not your mouth here.
That's actually kinda depressing to watch, clearly it was better track design wise and how the dirt is packed.
Not a case of nostalgia.

A key takeaway was you could pass in so many sections off the track, not just 1 or 2..
James and Chad were of course a level above, but they sliced through the pack like it was nothing.
It’s very hard to go past the end of the 2t era, but I’ve been watching some of 2014 again recently, and even then, only 10 years ago, the tracks seemed better.
More technical, a lot of hard pack with traction at a premium, mistakes were made, but they could move around all over the track. And damn it certainly looks like they used a lot more dirt. What happened?
Amen.
this new bullshit is not Supercross. It’s SafetyCross !
no whoops or triples this week again allegedly
I'd like to see the contract details from then and now concerning the quantity of dirt used and track design requirements. Maybe it would shed some light on what we're seeing.
Probably not something that’s written into a contract? More like something that’d be discussed in planning meetings.
But who knows what goes on behind the scenes. There was no mention of the nine whoop maximum and no dragon backs ‘rule’ until it happened.
Glad extreme enduros are free to watch on YouTube as well as trials. SX just isn’t the same. 1977 was first SX in person. They are trying to turn SX into a pop show. No thanks
I imagine the amount of dirt used would be something specified, either a min or max range, or specific amount/cost if it's provided by a contractor. Even if they own it and store it somewhere, they'd have to have it trucked in and that contract would be for a specified amount. Commercial construction requires contracts and definition of scope for everything.
The apparent difference in the amount used now compared to the past should be easily attributed to something intentional. Shrinkflation?
Now, the whoops and dragonbacks could very well be a handshake/wink-and-nod agreement since it wouldn't be a specific contract item (unless they have one with that sort of language in it).
Thread is approaching “I’m so core I don’t watch the racing” levels
I can't speak for others, but that's not my perspective.
Mine is more of a, "This used to be my favorite restaurant but I don't enjoy it as much nowadays. The food isn't as good and the portions are smaller. Wonder what and why they changed?", attitude.
What is Ken looking at?
Damn....that is a spot on analogy.
Lets bring ROOF back.
Few things in life are certain but we know of at least two. Racing was better with 2 strokes and Dianna Dahlgren in it. Just sayin
DD was more than just a pretty face....she had personality.
