The triple crowns makes it a bit easier to have more laps lead now than 8 years ago, as well as for the holeshots.
On the other hand, there was also more heat races back then.
Also worth noting that the points structure has changed slightly this year (not that it would make a huge difference).
Thanks for doing these statistics posts btw mate, especially the lap time ones in the bench racing threads
2017 must sting for Eli.
...and 2023.

We did go through a few years of 26 points also, top 5 all got bumped an extra point, that'd count for about 8-10 points in most cases
Be interesting how often the points leader after 10 rounds went on to be champion.
The laps led thing is pretty impressive. Jett at 130. Roczen is next with like 40-50 this year? We’re lucky this points battle isn’t even further out of hand right now.
How far was 2nd in points behind after 10 rounds?
I think the gap to 2nd will show more than total points.
Marvelous
Those stats remind me just how good Dungey was…dang.
Damn! when you look at those figures, Jett is in some pretty rare air. He really is looking like one of these Phenoms and potentially if he keeps this up in SX and MX, he's going to be much more of a legend than he already is. Enjoy it while it lasts folks, were witnessing something special and it's only beginning. Honda found a Gold Mine with Jett, just hope he stays healthy.
It's also a reminder of how much better the mid pack riders are these days, long gone are the days of falling down in the first corner only to come to through the pack and win like RC/JS did.
Its hard to believe that 3 former/currant and 2 2xSX champs are now the mid-pack riders...
Not to mention that 20 min mains also have increased the total laps....laps led should be a percentage to compare apples to apples...
Yep, when i saw that Jett stat of laps led I was in shock, because JS and RC days felt more dominate due to the fact they could smash through the pack, plus they would have taken a lot of laps led from each other, but there are more laps made these days.
I guess it is more startcross in that sense
There are more laps per race at 20 minutes than the 20 lap races then.
Yeah now that they are making 45 second lap tracks....
Triple crowns are not counted in laps led. It’s why people like Anderson are not reported as having led a lap this year even though he did at A2. So it actually makes Jett’s stats look more impressive
Pit Row
They had 45 second tracks then too...they just ran 20 laps on them instead of 27
Ok so this is interesting. For the 20 years, rd 10 leader, gap and eventual champion.
Last year was only the second time in 20 years that the points leader after Rd 10 didn’t go on to win the title. And Jett is sitting bang on the average leader’s point gap.
I think you forgot the scariest stat of all, Jett has won 5/10 races he entered with an average 2/3 second gap of 2nd place, makes you wonder if he could go faster than his current speed, this type of race craft is something riders learn in their mid 20s, not in they early 20s like Jett, if these are his numbers in his first year, how they will look like in 5 years?
I did the same stats for the Pro motocross championship.
2 things you have to notice first :
- Jett Lawrence in 2023 and Zachary Osborne in 2020 had a shorter season (22 races for Jett, 18 for Zachary instead of 24 for the others)
- I don't have the stats for Ryan Dungey in 2015

Man, 2016 Kenny really was on another level.
So was 2016 Jett Lawrence....Lol
Great stats! Interesting.....thanks for putting that together.
In my opinion, it would be more interesting to see these stats for the last ten champions in their first championship year.
So grab the first championship year for the guys like Dungey, Villopoto, Webb and Tomac who have mutliple titles.
You'd have to go back more than ten years to do that, but it seems more comparable in the aspect of figuring out the 450 class vs being an established guy.
These stats would look a lot different if we didn't have as many mudders. This has been a very unusual season. Yes, everyone has to ride the mud, I get that, but so many things are different. And it is what it is, but I think as the seasons progress and there's a higher percentage of "normal" condition racing, the stats will start to favor Jett even more.

Reed was leading in 2009 and lost, based on your datat.
Yes, that’s why I said it’s only happened twice in 20 years.
