Indian Dunes

Same here Ozy, at 14 it was my first race, and first track ever. Went to the Russ Darnell MX school that summer.

Sure do. There were always a few of those Corsairs parked near Shadow Glen.

Got busted on that filming dealio too, Heather may have been before my time there.

Trivia Q, Have you ever met a Heather that wasn't hot ?

Well I raced Fri Nite Dunes in 78, so maybe I just didn't reconize

You are correct about the old wood jump and I'm one of those who got stuck more than once! We sure used alot of duck tape in those days to try and keep from drowing out the engines.

It was a cool spot to go watch all the fast guys jump it, as always they made it look easy.

The Viewfinders Grand Prix track ran you through the river jump, then up some loose sand hill that always had a bottleneck. What a mess, a hugh class of 125 beginners/novice's all jamming up this narrow trial, getting stuck, crashing, pushing the bike up hill with the throttle cracked wide open roosting a shower of sand at anything behind them, which was alot of other riders. My bud and I were happy just to finish that race, which didn't happen to often.

What I remember about Indian Dunes was all the Walnut and avacado groves. It seemed like forever to get there driving through all those groves. I never raced back then but my friends and I would go to the track during the mid week. That was when I saw them shooting the Bob Hannah cover for dirt bike just after he joined Honda. CHiPs was also there one day.

I won hopetown at indians dunes 250 class one year...lapped up to 2nd place

Great name, but not PC.

I was in FL the whole time I was reading about that track 1973....we didn't get mag and TV coverage til much later.....all the mags were based in CA.

The whole damn MC world revolved around the magazines on the news stand, and we never got any press...other than the Winter Am...

I raced there friday nights, sundays and also on wed nights in the summer. My favorite track was Shadow Glen on Sundays. Great times! They also had a small track by entrance for speedway bikes to pratice.

I rode the speedway track a lot, and the mini track on my YZ80D

Wasn't there a few C.H.I.P.'s TV shows filmed there?

A number of episodes were shot at the dunes.

Also the infamous Twilight Zone movie was filmed there, the one were Vic Morrow was killed.

And numerous film/TV scenes were filmed there.

I just remembered that I was in a movie that was shot there in 1980 or so. They needed a motocross pits for some scenes and I went there to fill in the background.

It starred Elliott Gould and Bill Cosby and I had a great scene that I stood right next to Elliott Gould…………it wound up on the cutting room floor.

“The Devil and Max Devlin” is the name of the flick. Most have never heard of it. " title="Laughing">

I was there in i think 80 or 81 when they were filming the opening scene of knight Rider.

There was a fire break or something in the hills behind Indian Dunes and it led over the top and down into what would be Simi Valley today. There was an off road park called Muntz MC Park that had tracks and open riding at the end of that road too.
Indian Dunes actually had a few DT-1's and other well hammered bikes they rented by the hour.

I heard that entire area is getting swallowed up with a massive housing development.

You guy's really know the "Dunes", the best back then,I remember going one day riding my RM465, got stung by a bee going there, parked at the IT, unloaded, and went to that little warm up track next to Shadow Glen, first lap coming around, track was flooded and roped off, there went my nice clean White gear, next time around, went to shift, nothing!, looked down , chain was gone, so I flagged down my buddy, and 5 laps later I find it. Pushed that bike back to the pits, and after buying a masterlink, headed to SG, only to run out of gas after about 2 laps..., Now I'm pissed because I'm pushing this big ass bike again, see a guy ride by with a gas can, I bum a shot to get me back to the truck. Once at the truck, I throw that bitch on the Milkcrate, and fill it up. Still pissed I decide to keep my ass near the truck, and just ride on the IT. I took the Zook off the crate and headed out, I noticed some slight changes to the track, and had my first encounter with a new part called a "rhythm section"..I looked like Bob Hannah on that Unadilla poster until I hit the last one, thought for sure I had broken some ribs when I got off the ground...Loved that place though especially that stream in the summer..

Damn I forgot they rented bike's too, saw "Super Hunky ridng" a Mini Enduro around the pits once..

AME Friday Nights the Zahrt bros were hard to beat. International, Shadow Glenn, Dunestown GP. Good memories. Got my 4x stuck in the river after a Sunday race and had to have the dozer pull me out. Twighlight Zone (Vic Morrow) disaster happened there, and Dukes of Hazard was filmed there too. KC

Damn, big Rick on a 60? That's abuse.

The first time I went there was in the early 70's with a friend and his brother, I wasn't even riding yet. My friend's brother rented one of those POS bikes, I think it was a Suzuki ts 125 or something like that, it was a pile. He end up cracking the ignition cover on it, He just leaned it against the shed on the left side and walked off before they noticed it. I raced there several times, did ok. I went there for a CRC summer series back in 79, the international track had about what seemed like 8,000 riders on it for practice, so I rode over to the Shadow Glen to warm up, didn't even make it a lap, when I got cross rutted of a jump and landed up side down on my left wrist. I Had to use my left forearm to pull in the clutch so I could ride back. Dislocated and broke my left wrist, hand and thumb in that crash, wasn't a pretty sight.

Those 82 RM 250 's were rockets. The original Z model !

I had an 82 RM250 also. Won the 250 shoot out with great motor and flawless full floater suspenison. Only down fall were the whimpy front forks. Bike was pretty bullet proof too. Definetely needed a Ceet racing seat though!
