Is GNCC still governed by the AMA? I thought they got dropped by the AMA a few years back.

Yes. Still governed.

GNCC went back to the AMA after a couple seasons without them

Wow, two guys going at it. Cool. Probably on Vargs.

Nope, they are both shown on "OTH" Tongue

I guess Vargs but no confirmation yet.

Mark Stevens overall ranked 350th on 418, curious to get more details in how he managed his 3 laps 2h race. It doesn't seem to involve pit stops nor slowing on the last lap (1st lap 47 min, 2nd lap 41 min, 3rd lap 43 min). That result also seems similar to what he was getting last year in GNCC on a Honda (overall 300-500, ranked in Masters +50) so maybe he just went for it and the range was fine for his pace?

Schilling is ranked 368th, he did only 2 laps but his pace (35 then 33 min laps) was faster, more similar to Sportsman B. It would be interesting to know why he stopped, maybe he wasn't confident he had enough range to finish a third lap (would have been around 1h40 min)?

This would be consistent with a range varying between 1h30-2h30 depending on track and rider but for sure it would be interesting to get more details from the riders.

The bulletin says 10am race specifically. Maybe if they are gated in the last wave that could take about 10 minutes off the race time. Seems like the 90 minute race would be the better idea though, but maybe the idea is to introduce some strategy whether its battery preservation or 3, 10 minute charging breaks or the like.

Again it's a good idea to try things out and see what works and what doesn't in low stakes situations outside premier class racing.

Well you may have to ride slower to win.  Its the “stretch thr battery”. Race

Hey guys, wanted to follow up on the race as I was one of the two riders on a Varg. My bike died about 1 mile from the finish line. I'd consider myself a mid pack B rider and rode the first two laps at a decent pace. The bike was set at 48hp and 80% regen for the first two laps and then I knocked it down to 40hp and 80% regen for the last lap as I knew it was going to be close. The bike was great for the first two laps and was having a great time but you definitely want to be extra careful around other riders as they aren't expecting you due to the bike being so quiet. Let me know if you have any more questions.

It looks like your pace was higher than Mr Stevens, if you race again would your strategy be more conservative riding throughout or a short charging pit stop?

Thanks very much for the info Dan, what a bummer, but congrats on your ride.

I have a ton of questions Tongue

The slower Varg rider getting over 2h10min and yourself getting stranded after maybe 1h30min shows how tough it is to estimate the range, even on the same track, so much depends on the rider skills and speed. Do you think the range is predictable, like did you use about 30% for each lap or does it drop faster at the end? Did you notice a drop in power (and if so, when)?

There are so many comments about the lack of clutch, what do you think, did you miss it at some point?

Did you do the software/range update before this race?

If yes, then what would you have done differently increase your chances of finishing?

I'm intending on trying it again at the TN GNCC in April. I think if results are someone's main focus, I don't think riding the Stark is the move with the current battery technology. Conservative riding does seem to make a big difference on battery life.

It seemed like I was using about 30% per lap and then it seemed like it dropped quite a bit faster under 20% which is also when I noticed the power start to drop off. The lack of clutch was great for me because I've always struggled with arm pump and definitely feel like I have less of it riding the Stark.

Thanks, so it may be more practical to use a conservative power setting for the first lap and say if you use 25% for each of the first 2 laps go berserk for the final lap (with 50% in hand including 30% without power limitation)?

Kinda counterintuitive to start slow and finish fast, do you think that could be a practical way to go around the limitations of the Varg?

It's great to see some riders giving it a run in GNCC 2h races, definitely pushing the envelope of this bike. And it sounds like you're having fun, even if this first race must have been frustrating for sure!

I get the dislike for e-bikes.  Heck, I'm still upset about 4 strokes...

But.  I don't understand the negativity about racing them and them not being practical.

Racing is the driving competitive force behind development, ingenuity and progression.  It's what made what we are racing now what they are.  What better way to advance the E platform than to throw into a competitive environment to force progression?

From my understanding, it is not clear how to tell if the Stark successfully received the update so I emailed Stark a few days before the race and asked them to confirm I received the update. They emailed me back and said that I did but as I was sitting on the starting line, my bike showed that it was due another update so I'm not completely sure.

It was honestly a great time. I could hear the crowd cheering the entire way around the track which was a cool aspect I hadn't anticipated. Hard to have a bad day riding dirt bikes while staying healthy.

You're a better man than I.

Wink

A brand new bike at a premium price that can't finish a race even with downpowering it and having to check constantly what's "left in the tank" doesn't fit in with my idea of fun.

Why?

Isn't the point of entering a race at least to try and reach the finish?

If it is anything like an RC car, spinning the drive tire has a huge impact on range. The more it spins/slides the worse the range. You also get a lot more heat in the motor/battery. You could try trials tires. I hear they punish you so bad for spinning the rear tire you just won't do it.

Wink

A brand new bike at a premium price that can't finish a race even with downpowering it and having to check constantly what's "left in the tank" doesn't fit in with my idea of fun.

Don't hate on it unless you try it. I did try to reach the finish, hence the bike dying one mile from it. The technology will only improve from here.

Breaking news: to appreciate an electric dirtbike you need to be fully aware of its shortcomings, accept them as such and adopt a positive attitude.

Damn, Racing doesn't fit the bill, he might not be in the market for one, who would have thought ? Tongue

Did Stark ever claim the bike was ready for a 2-hour race? Hint: No, they never said that.

The guy is somewhat of a trailblazer racing that bike and to be a trailblazer you generally can't have an infantile attitude.
