Most groups that I see on Facebook that are populated with "Core" guys have seemed to have beef with Jett going back even before his missteps at the beginning of this season.

To me with the fact that he is a way better outdoor guy would make me think the core fan would be all about Jett because that's kind of a throwback instead of being a Supercross specialist.

For those that say he still hasn't done enough, the guy has won the last 6 championships that he has entered fairly handily. If he never wins another race he has already cemented his position as an all timer. I think he should come in expecting to knock the veterans off their perch.

I happened to stay in the same hotel as the Lawrences in Salt Lake City last year and granted it was a limited amount of time, but I saw him at breakfast and had a couple short convos in the elevator. Jett was always very respectful to everyone around him and most the time in the elevator he would always defer to Hunter and definitely treat him like the big brother.

NOOOOOOO!!!! Not another Jett thread! Just stop already or at least go back and read the dozens already addressing this issue!

I think it comes down to one simple mistake- don't disrespect the KING!!!! Everyone loved RC, right up to the point where they lowered him from the ceiling on a throne with a crown. The crowd let him know immediately, there is and only will ever be 1 King. RC eventually clawed his way back from that PR mistake and became a crowd favorite again. Now recently Jett, or his team, floats the idea that Jett is gunning for the Kings win record. Really?! Before you even win your first race!? I think the crowd's reaction Saturday was there way of letting him know to "keep the KING's name out your fucking mouth!!"  MC is sacred in SoCal, don't put yourself on his level.

Makes no difference. One 450 motocross championship does not make you an all timer. Ask all the guys nobody talks about. Mike Keidrowski, for example. A four time AMA motocross champion that is absolutely a legend, but definitely not an all timer in the eyes of the majority. Also, the only rider to ever win a 125, 250, and 500 motocross championship besides Jeff Ward.

You realise only two other riders have gone undefeated beside Jett right?

I've had an open mind about the Lawrence's for the past couple years and was actually becoming a Jett fan last year and early this year.

As soon as I read that he was complaining about the mud in SF and acting cocky, my fandom stopped dead in its tracks. The picture became all too clear that this kid is a spoiled little brat with a lot less maturity than a lot of 20 year olds I have seen in the sport and in day to day life.

And the JA21 Helmet thing and then him crying and not apologizing and the tickets to the Jett fan zone thing. Really sealed the deal... Who do you think you are? Is my question.  The media has blown up his head.

And then once I realized all that it became so clear how much the media, FELD, etc are SHOVING the Lawrence's down our throats. You got the Jett/Deegan banners at Angels stadium, the non stop Lawrence coverage is just annoying.   I don't hate Jett, I just no longer am a fan and see him for what he is. I don't like Hunter though, straight up.

In moto I root for the underdogs and the blue collar guys, the dudes that have paid their dues and are solid through and through. I think a lot of people have this mentality to who they like. It starts with Hannah, it's the reason we like RC and JS7, Peick, and many others who were hardened riders. To see this kid get so much smoke blown up his ass and then act like such a little b****h and cry on TV is super lame.

There is absolutely no comparison between Peick and Stew and RC.

Peick was a journeyman privateer who managed to get a factory ride eventually and start getting top 10s.

RC and Stew were amateur and then professional phenoms.  Stewart was dominating the 125 class from 16 years old.

The only thing correct about your comparison is that they all grew up with blue collar backgrounds - but so did Jett Lawrence.

First, I like the kid.  I enjoy watching history being made like he did outdoors last year as much as I like watching a season-long battle going down to the last race. Not everyone does, but we'll all be talking about that season for a long time.  Hell, I could watch the kid ride alone on an empty track and appreciate his talent.  That said, there are some things that are raising some eyebrows and causing some hate.

-All of the media hype, whether or not it is real or deserved, makes him an easy target.  Actually THE target for everyone.

-Going after the 72 win total before his first race.  Maybe this was even projected upon him, but he didn't seem to dismiss it very effectively.  Ok, great outdoor season, amazing talent, lots of buzz in the sport, but still a little overzealous.  Most fans say they like to hear confidence and a little bit of shit-talking, but this was a stretch.  Jeremy had a nice take on the matter.

-His complaints about San Francisco, saying it was stupid and should have been cancelled.  Ok, it was messy--historically messy even, but we race in the rain.  I don't think Sexton thought it should have been cancelled.

-His comments after San Fran (I think) to the effect of, "Yeah, I'm down 8 points (or whatever), but I can make that up if I have to."  Again, pretty confident and not everyone likes to hear that.  He may indeed make up the deficit...time will tell.

-The Anderson helmet grabbing incident.  From what we saw, he seemed to start it, or at least it could be interpreted as an over-reaction to Anderson's racing tactics. Happens at test/practice tracks around the country every day.  Even if you are neutral on the kid, this didn't seem to create many new fans.  The purported lack of a direct apology caused some heat as well.  I don't know if we really know what happened, but shielding the 20 year-old from intense media and rider controversy at that point may have some merit.

This is a humbling sport that can set you back in many ways.  He has done great things already, and is on the path to many more. Hopefully he's gaining the perspective that we all do as we have setbacks in life, and will hear the cheers on the podium before too long.  Just one man's opinion.

Best post in the thread ^^^^

I agree, hopefully the kid learns from his missteps so far.     I'm guessing he's going to need a few more "reality checks".

What I don't see changing, is the constant in your face exposure....they're gonna milk the shit out of this kid.       That's where the majority of the shade thrown his way is coming from.

It's the way he disrespected Jason by not handling the (unnecessary, by Jason's own admission) apology himself. His team did it. That was bitch made. Yeah, he's 20, but still, even if your team did it for optics, handle it yourself if it has to happen anyway! What happened to behaving honorably?

If you as a presumptive adult care about how one man apologizes to another man, then I'm afraid he isn't the bitch.

Seriously, none of us has any idea what happened. Jett may have went back to the truck and said "Holy crap, I screwed up" and his camp may have told him to just shut up and don't do nothing. I'm would bet large sums of money that he is taking counsel from others.

I see where you are going here, and it sounds pretty logical. The King is the King and will always be the King.

Personally, I only heard that he mentioned 72, I did not hear the context. Was he baited into saying it or did he outright say it of his own volition?

Yes, it was too early to say it out loud, but shouldn't every rookie have it as his goal to be the best ever? When we were kids riding our bicycles, we never dreamed of winning the local tracks C class, we dreamed on our bikes that we were winning Anaheim or Daytona. As far as Jett dreaming of 72 wins, if your dreams don't scare you, you need new dreams.

Does that put him on Mt. Rushmore? Let's pump the brakes on that but when you do something that only 2 other people have done you are pretty damn special.

I guess you missed the part where his lowest outdoor placing was 3rd on debut at MxDn went on to be undefeated against a guy who gave tomac all he can handle.

You list alot of great riders with finished careers, jett just started.

Everyone one of those names you listed Jett holds up against all of them at the start of their careers.

And no I did not say jett is better them btw.

- Letting Roczen by at SMX and then joking about it as a gift.

- Challenging the King's record

- Grabbing Anderson's helmet, then subsequent text messages about tickets to the Jett fan zone.

- His media crew buffering his direct communication with other riders, as Jason Anderson complained about.

Any one of these would be concerning, but all of them are a pattern and not excusable with a "he's young" argument.

Personally I'm annoyed by all this, but not "hate". I'll reserve that for my future ex-wife.

-Kurt

This perfectly sums it up. We've begun to see a pattern develop recently of him coming off as arrogant and disrespectful, and most fans of this sport don't really appreciate that.

At the same time, if he changes his attitude a bit and just wins, you'll hear stadiums cheer for him again.

A foreigner that is a real threat to the Americans on their home turf is very often disliked by them. Ask JMB, Pourcel, Reed, Ferrandis, Lawrence brothers... Some are also just waiting till the "foreigner" puts one foot wrong to lynch him. Remember when Marvin Musquin did what KTM expected him to do, help Ryan Dungey to claim the SX Championship over Eli Tomac? From than on, even Marvin Musquin had haters.

So to sum it up, he's a foreigner who's a real threat for championships the coming years. Than you've the fact that FELD together with his agent Lucas Mirtl are trying to make him the new RC, Stewart, McGrath... annoys people. But they need to know that someone with the poster boy quality, who also wants to be the poster boy of the sport isn't found easily. We didn't saw Tomac, Sexton, Anderson step up for example. For most people is one of those two reasons enough. But if they aren't enough you can combine them with that stupid farce against Jason Anderson, and how he personally made it worse with unfollowing Jason Anderson, while his crew already handled the situation.

But in dutch we've a saying that goes as followed: If you are willing to beat the dog, you will always find a tool to do it. What I mean is: When you are an American SX & MX fan who has an American favorite, you don't need much to dislike, hate or even bash Jett Lawrence.

As far as Jett dreaming of 72 wins, if your dreams don't scare you, you need new dreams.

First time he mentioned McGrath was in interview with ESPN.  22 Sept 2023

"A realistic goal -- it will be hard to do -- is to beat McGrath's Supercross wins record," Lawrence says. "I'm coming in so young and will already be battling for wins straight away."  https://www.espn.co.uk/auto/story/_/id/38440295/jett-lawrence-motocross-undefeated-season

Then after his first SX win.

Jett was then asked about his comment in the pre-season about going after McGraths 72 wins… “In all seriousness about that, it probably might not get done, it’s a lot of race wins. Coming in you have got to set such a high goal for yourself that’s going to make you go a little crazy for it and make you work hard. It’s not meaning really that I’m going to do it, it’s I want to have a goal, if I didn’t have a goal I would be happy just to be here and race around in whatever position I wanted."  https://gatedrop.com/jett-lawrence-on-his-first-450-supercross-win-and-mcgrath-72-record/

This is what all the haters are basing their 'he disrespected the King' bollocks on.

Jett's 250 + 450 22-0 success has resulted in over-marketing, yes everywhere, yes some Fan's are fatigued.

Jett is young, he has prob seen the feedback / blow back from some of the things he has said (McGrath record) or done  (JA21 dustup), but I think these were not intentionally done to create problems.  If JA21 road blocked me for 5 mins, and after the race I tried to talk to talk to him about it, and he tries to disrespect me and ride off, I may have grabbed his helmet or worse.

He is a great story, hugely talented, and will learn humility goes a long ways in life, business, and entering the 450 SX class.

I'm not a hater of the kid by any means, but the over saturation is a bit much - and that's all on Feld. I can't recall a time in the sport's televised history where the broadcast went PiP during a race to show a rider either getting suited up, or picking their gate.

"We're also fed up with the annoying over-bearing "super-fans"." - Magoofan

This sums it up pretty well...  I am neutral on Jett.  Love watching him ride and race, the super talent and his ability to float over things other guys mash is mesmerizing.  But the constant force-feed of "all time great" and "best ever" and "new king" and "here comes 72" from his psychotic fans causes people to post (negatively)...  It's not Jett hate.  It's just rejection of the perceived reality his fans are living in.

If he does it?  Or even if he's looking like he can get there, then lets have some fun with it...  But he's got 1 premier SX win and 1 450 outdoor championship.  72 SX wins and 150 total wins is an awful long ways away.  For what it's worth, Ricky's 150 is the one he'll get in my opinion.

The fans thing makes the most sense.  I must just be ignoring those people and taking the  hype as the standard marketing hype that surrounds every...

The fans thing makes the most sense.  I must just be ignoring those people and taking the  hype as the standard marketing hype that surrounds every win.  Jett said his goal was 72 SX wins. I think if you ask anybody that was in his position coming into the series that question and they answered honestly . They too would say they would like to beat the best. Anybody that is motivated enough to be able to have a perfect MX season is going to want to go after the best of the best.  I know that James Stewart said  72 was a goal, I'm not sure if RC ever said it publically.  Like some people said that defended Andersons racing. These guys are out there racing to be the BEST.

Its funny that he is giving too much back to the fans by spending more money and offering more in his and his brother's VIP  setup and that has brought hate. People have been asking to be able to buy replica Jersey's, Jetts people make it happen, Fans ask for riders to be more honest, Jett is doing that. I still do not see anything that he himself has done that is on the level of RC in the crown at the US open.  Maybe I too would be tire of Jett if I associated all the super fans hyping him up, or the people that want to be the first to say that Jett was going to win a million races.

I've been deep into following this sport since my dad got be a Dirtbike Magazine when I was 3 or 4 years old. And there have always been crazy fans claiming that arider will be the next big thing. AC was being called baby Jesus, Robbie Renard was going to be the next Bradshaw, Bradshaw was going to be the next hanna or whoever. I guess I've just not  taken it too seriously  and wrote most bold predictions off as people wanting to be able to say they said it first. My mother was a talk show host for years and maybe that helped me separate the public perception for the real person. Knowing both sides of my mother. And not letting some of the off putting stuff that Jett has done cloud my opinion of the good things he has  done.

As far as Jett being an all timer. I would say he is on his way there. And in SOME aspects you have to put his name up there with just a couple other racers. I think Jett and Hunter still have a lot of good years in front of them.  And  I wish that people would look at everything he's done and not focus on the stuff that can be spun as bad.

Cooper web for example. I used to think he was a stuck up arrogant person. Then I started to hear stories from people who know him or have hung out with him. He ran into  a customer of mine while at dinner and hung out talking Moto the rest of the night with him and his buddies.  I used to think similarly about Reed but changed my mind after being open to learning more about him. Now I would say I am a fan of every rider for one reason or another.

Nobody is perfect and the world would be a better place if we did not let perception to become our reality when we do not see the full picture.

Very well written m8 - ur a solid human and you get it. 👊

I could not disagree more. 250 Supercross championships are meaningless And his two 250 motocross championships hold little weight when comparing to the success of people such as RV, Dungey, Eli,Stewart, Reed, McGrath, RC, RJ, Stanton, Ward, Glover, Hannah, etc. I could keep going.

Don’t take the word “meaningless” so literally. I can’t remember the last time somebody was debating about the greats of the sport and brought up how many 250 Supercross championship they had. At least there is a full gate of 250 riders in motocross. 250 Supercross is not even a national championship. Jett is an amazing rider. He is not an all-time great currently. That is my opinion. You are entitled to yours.

If you don’t want people to take the word meaningless “so literally” maybe select another word. I’m sure thousands of families have gone broke chasing that “meaningless” title…. Stop down playing how good these guys are on bikes and how much sacrifice it takes to get that “meaningless” title. Don’t even get me started on how hard it is from the ass end of the world.

Nope, that's not it.

All the fan boys claiming he was going to win every main event this supercross season. Before the season even started. Same fan boys who claimed McGraths win record is as good as beaten after Jetts first and only main event win so far.  And I like Jett for the record.
