Cooler temps and the huge oaks on the hillsides of Road Atlanta breaking out in vibrant reds and golden yellows. Plowed up red clay mixed with sawdust made perfect loam.
The best part though was a starting line filled with the best Gran Prix riders and our National champions. The kaleidoscope of colors coupled with the sound of all of those factory bikes put your senses in overload.

Now THAT would have been real racing!! The Man vs. Hannah. I remember reading about it.

Plano, TX. 1977, if I recall. They put on an unreal show.

Hannah looked like a man possessed, while RD was his unflappable self.

Hannah won.

I remember when they changed the name to Trans-USA, in 79 or 80.

The Euros had stopped coming, but it was great to see all of the "Factory" guys race the same class. (125,250, and 500).

We drove up to what is now the Hangtown National track in 1981 and the race was better than a National with 10 or more "Factory" guys.

Darrell Schultz ,Magoo, Hannah, and the rest had a real battle that day. :D

Trans USA at Unadilla fall 81. I was there. Barnett won 250 and Magoo won 500 support on an LOP Honda. He swept the series support class and got his Honda factory gig for the following year. Some kid on a Kawi named Bailey raced there too. Hannah was #100. October upsate New York was awesome.

The 1974 Trans-am races all the way up to Road Atlanta, had more World, International and National Champions than any other series in history. After Road Atlanta, many of the Europeans went home. If you look at the entry list on those races you will see what I'm talking about...those days were magic.

That pic of Roger is just damn awesome. I've got a lot of pictures, autographs, and programs from the Inter Am series and the Trans Am and Trans USA series. Maybe once the weather turns I'll break them out and scan and post some of them.

FTE, that first pic is a helluva nice looking track.

If only they still raced on tracks like that.

What was the name of the track, and where is it.

I remember that telephone pole turn at road atlanta, it was still there in 1981. I qualified for my first national at that track in '81. I was a senior in high school. I think I got lapped three times in the first moto.
Any one remeber the wooden drop away jump on the long down hill straight. Larry is right about the colors,I have a picture from the national (held in late spring) and one corner is marked by a dogwood tree in full bloom.

There was a drop off in the woods that was like jumping down an elevator shaft. I think Barry Higgins laid out that track.

Here's a few more '74 Road ATL Trans-AMA pix - not the best, but better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick...

Hey Larry!

Was this in the downhill wooded section, after coming down from the section at the top (where you were checking Roger's brake point)? - At this point I don't remember any details, but I [b:0d80c]do[/b:0d80c] remember that section scared the ever-lovin' crap outta me!

Ahhh, Road Atlanta... I'll never forget that time on the KX250 I actually got a good start, then proceeded to crash and get run over by [b:0d80c]everybody[/b:0d80c], just as we were heading up the hill to the top... good times :D

great pics Tony. The drop off was in the woods right before you came back on the front staight/start are. I think Brad Wallace broke his shoulder there in 74 or 75.
