I get way more done/ make more money at work now I'm back riding. I work construction and being in good shape from riding and working out is helping on the job. Yes Mondays can be a bitch, but most people are worn out on Mondays and didn't do anything all weekend.

It's somehow refreshing to read everyone in the same boat and making it sound like it's not about moto but really anything is hard on the body, I do feel like a pussy after reading some of your physical pains.

I thought about stopping with moto a couple times.

When my daughter got a seizure in the night after spending a day at the MX track. She got diagnosed with epilepsy shortly after and needs to have limited stimulus.

After I couldn't walk for some time because of the pain of bulging discs caused by a compression during moto.

Because my 2,5y old sons only interest is moto. He can basically only talk about it and nothing else really interests him. Albeit it also makes me feel proud, I want him to know and try other cool passions that are out there as well. And not have the same as me, that life doesn't make too much sense without moto.

But even though I was close also after thinking of the consequences on our bodies, it's impossible to walk away. It's just too much damn fun and it helps put the rest of life into perspective. Reading some of you guys stuff, that had much worse injuries and still come back just reinforces that. Fuck

Rode a dirtbike from 1998 (5yo) to 1-11-2024 (30yo)

Knock on wood never majorly hurt. only have had a concussion, with post concussion syndrome in 2013, a broken index finger, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns. Very minor injuries.

made it to a local pro speed and maintained that for about a 8 year span.

what I notice is,

noise bothers me, loud noise absolutely pisses me off.

Eyesight is not as sharp, dust particles in air and roost particles over the years probably at fault for this.

my knees can feel every movement as if two pieces of cold rolled flat surface steel was sliding together, it’s like the same vibration, noise, and feeling.

My diet, i notice I eat worse, like way worse now. It’s almost like I crave bad for me foods (fried, oily). Guess it was the years I went without. I also catch myself wanting a carbonated product to drink often.

I try to maintain that portion of my life, but it’s hard to not cave when it’s an affordable crave.

Sure, moto is risky and can leave you with life long injuries but life is gonna catch up to you anyway, might as well have fun.

What did your dad do for a living? Any weekend warrior sportsball stuff? 30-40 years of manual work that seems benign can definitely add up. I don't have too many firemen friends that don't have shot shoulders, backs or knees. Our fleet mechanics are just as bad with knees and backs and lots of carpal tunnel syndrome. Almost any construction trade, if a guy stays on a crew will be pretty wrecked. I remember seeing a 50 year old cement finisher. He walked hunched over, or shuffled. He was one of the best but he seemed to be in pain all the time.

Owned and worked in retail stores for years, then when he'd had enough of whinging customers he started a lawn mowing business with my mum. Trimming hedges is what wrecked his shoulders, moving pianos in a music store wrecked his back. He had no idea what hurt his knee, it just wore out. He never played any sport, just repetetive work did it

IMG 1380.jpeg?VersionId=RcYG.85DGHiHpgNHBnZq2qMMmI turned pro in 1993 and pushed it through 2008. I’m not going to drop my shit list here, but I assure you it runs deep.
I’ll be 51 on Monday and my program is well refined from years of effort.
I will say this. Consistency is the name of the game. If you are willing and able to do the physical work, you can overcome setbacks, create healthy habits and transform yourself into who you really want to be physically.
I run a 6 day a week program. 3 dedicated days on the mtn bike, 4 to 5 gym days and one day of weekend moto. If you build a schedule and stick to it, you will make gains quickly.
Diet, hydration & sleep. If these 3 pieces aren’t correct, it becomes difficult to stick to any plan. It takes a mountain of self discipline to be physically successful, but if you truly want to be the best you, you can.

Crumbs man, I really hope you will be ok in the long run. Followed your story next door in Non Moto and my hair still stands up when I see that.

All the best wishes to you for 24 and beyond Sumdood. Look after ya self.

Shoot after reading this thread I am in a good position compared to many.

45+ years of racing, 700+ races, and the only lingering issue is from a pilon fracture of my lower left leg in 1995. (Arthritis it seems)

Never wore knee braces and have zero issues with my knees......who knew?

Knees, back, and shoulders. Started riding at 6 years old and am in my early 40s now. I rode at least 3 days a week for 20 years and raced most weekends unless I was out due to injury during that time. I still ride/race but maybe 10% of what I used to.  I work out 4-5 days a week lifting in the gym and additionally cardio outside either running or mtn biking 3-4 days a week. I’m 6’4 235 so already predisposed to joint issues so racing and crashing didn’t help. Lifting weights definitely helps my joints feel better. When I take time off from the gym I seem to develop joint pain. My biggest worry is all the hits the head and what effects that will have in the next 10 years. Still wouldn’t do anything different though!

Several times had the bell rung, both with mx, and some snocross stuff. Right shoulder needs a lot of warm up, but all in all , not too bad. Knees have been ok.

I feel like any athlete of note with have a few nicks as they age, mx or not.

I feel pretty good at 56 having taken some big hits (started racing at 12 years old). I'm pretty lucky, although I did have to get a hip replacement. Lower back is fucked up with degenterative disc disease- people tell me I have good posture and I say I really have no choice.

Laying on the couch, where it is safe, can lead to plenty of other issues.

As others have said, it's my knees bother me the most. Tibial Spine fracture at 18 followed by a Tibial Plateau fracture at 29. Now at 43, its tough to get through a long work week sometimes.  It keeps me off the big bikes for now, unfortunately.

I don’t think riding is anywhere near as bad on the body as work. Trucking is by far the worst thing you could ever do to your body. It will destroy every part of you. And the millions of lbs of odd freight u lift & drag by hand is worse than any construction job. Ovr 100 nfl players couldn’t do a Sysco job at 1 warehouse.  I started working as a 3 yr old on a farm. Then ovr 1,200 concussions ,etc.  my list of work injuries r probably a higher # than Pastana.  If I had to pick a couple all the disk in my neck r blown out . I know I blew some more out driving this junk. Rebroke my wrist a few weeks ago that I 1st broke in 8-6 & kept working 30+ hr days 7 days a week. Did my good shoulder in on 8-6 . I couldn’t raise it at all. I quit 8-28 after a week I rode & couldn’t raise my arm at all.  Ruptured disk in back the deterioration on the vertebrae, disk & arthritis is worse.  Basically all the joints r destroyed.  And I still rode & not slow on a super slick , square holed hilly track. Wo on a 04 cr125 . I haven’t been passed in 2 yrs.  4+ kinds of epson salt hot hr bath. Save the water & dump ice in it for a morning ice bath. Helps the most. Whirlpool , sauna, pool, & stretching helps.  Injections helps too.  I let the bike do the work only time it’s physical is corners, hard impacts, whoops but not really. Stay loose & flow

1200 concussions? 🤣

My dad just got a knee replacement at 63, been riding since he was a teen.

I've been riding since I was 4, currently 42, and can say with certainty that my knees are going to be shot in 20 years. Lol.
