From what I understand, MC got fined for racing the Malmoe SX in Sweden without AMA licence.

No offense, but who really cares? Is he going to lose points from the Swedish National Series? Wink

Considering what he likely got for show money, it was worth it

He probably paid the fine with change he found in his couch cushions.

To race overseas, more specifically an "International Event," one must have a professional license from their home country AND a release from their home sanction (in this instance, the AMA) to participate in the event.
Way I understand it all, it's basically a legal liability permit saying of you get hurt at their race, your home country's sanction (AMA) will cover you for the usual (and required) death and dismemberment policy that you get with your license.
You cannot race a professional race anywhere without a valid license, unless it is some outlaw race. If it is a sanctioned international event, the rider must have a valid pro license...makes sense, right?

It's a series of hoops I have to jump through when I help riders with the German SX (and other) races...kind of used to it now

More importantly, if they were concerned about him having a license why didn't they check for one before he raced and not let him race? Oh that's right, they wanted the legend to ride in their race because they made big money off of him.

LOL- they pay him to show up and race and then fine him.
That is sorta funny.

I thought he was a lifetime member. Didn't he used to be in commercials or ads to get people to join the AMA?

you need AMA permission or something of the sort, basically you need to sign up for the race on both sides of the pond or the AMA will get theirs.

A membership and a Pro license are 2 different things.

I believe there is a difference between being an AMA "Lifetime Member" and having an AMA PRO Racing license

Especially considering that AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) is its own entity and AMA PRO Racing is owned by DMG

According to this, it says by the AMA, not by the race series he attended???
"Jeremy McGrath has been sanctioned by the AMA for running the Supercross Malmoe"

It also says he can not race any AMA or FIM event for 30 days.

plus when they pay him wouldn't that make him working in another country illegally if he didn't have the ama license?

Could someone who's somewhat fluent in Spanish and English translate this a little better than Google Translate's pathetic stab at it?

As far as I can tell though, he's suspended from participating in any AMA/FIM race for a month. Or am I misunderstanding that as well?

The FIM is the international body of racing for the world. Each country has their own sanctioning body, we have the AMA. In fact the AMA in under the FIM in a round about way.

What it means is that if an American rider races a race they need to get a "one time international license to race the event"

The federation from Sweden, requires all riders to have a professional license to race an event that is somehow tied to the FIM. McGrath was supposed to get an international license to race in Sweden through the AMA.

I had to do it to race an event in Belgium years ago. You have to have a pro license in your specific country (USA) and pay a fee to get a one-race provisional license to race a specific event.

McGrath is probably a lifetime AMA member but I doubt he has a current AMA Pro License. Why would he need one unless he races an AMA Pro event - which he no longer does. A race like the X Games is not an AMA Pro sanctioned event so they don't ask for a license.

So if he didn't have the license how was he allowed to even race? Don't they check your ticket at the gate? Seems like bullshit to fine him AFTER they let him race. Shit we don't let people ride our amateur events if they don't have an AMA and district card.
