When I bought my 23 CRF250R about this time last year I asked the same question.  I'd been running Rotella in my YZF.  I read the owners manual that said 10-30wt and was like.......really in hot as hell Texas in the summer but thats what Honda recommends.  I found 10-30 Motul on sale and bought a few gal.  Once I run out and if I still have the Honda I'll just use 10-40w, heck may use Rotella LOL.

I lied..........I didn't buy Motul.  I bought Maxima Pro Plus full Syn 10-30wt on sale.  Guess I should have stuck with Rotella........at least might be able to remember what oil I run.

Yes go with the Amsoil best stuff on the market and yes all the Japanese call for the 10w-40.

I have always found a 50W provides the best performance in MX transmissions.

I have been running it for 40 years. Why is it bad? I can’t wait to hear.

The main thing is it needs to be Jaso MA MA1 MA2 for motorcycle clutches. Rotella changed there formula a few years ago and is not good for clutches any longer. Fine for your engine but it will lead to clutch slippage. Kawasaki petroleum 10/40 is the best oem oil and after testing, Bel -Ray fill synthetic any weight is on top. It smoked amzoil in lubriticity tests. I'm a Yamalube guy and learning that it isn't as good as Kawi oil was a hard pill to swallow lol. Motyl use to be Kawasaki's synthetic but aren't any longer. Life long parts counter guy here.

72 hours on the stock clutch on my ‘21 450 and 25hrs on a ‘06 CR125 clutch with nothing but Rotella in both says otherwise. The 450 clutch doesn’t get abused but for everyone that knows the cr125’s it’s had a hard life, oil comes out silver every change and clutch performance hasn’t changed. May not have the JASO on the pail anymore but I haven’t noticed any difference in performance.

Rotella still has the MA2 rating on the bottle.

Actually Honda recommends 10w/30 in my 2023 CRF450R.

I haven't looked at a bottle since I came back to a Yamaha/Kawasaki shop. Just relaying what I learned from some oil training seminars I recently attended. I to got away with running regular Castrol 10/40 for years but finally got hard enough on clutches, I had to go back to a Motorcycle blended oil.

Because it's not recommended by most manufactures....

So you follow all manufacturer recommendations to a T then?

You must have a big budget for pistons changing them every 15 hours....

Rotella.

Ran Maimxa Pro Plus 10w30 in my 22 CRF450... SoCal hot weather it was fine. I changed it every 2 rides or after any race weekend. (Yes overkill, it's how I am).
