So after listening to the pulp show about how Deegan got screwed on the red flag restart, I got to thinking about a fix. Rather than do a staggered restart, or this crap they are talking about with pointing a flag at each rider, why don't we use actual "modern technology". Simply have the gate set up where each gate can be programmed to drop independently. Then if a restart is needed, just re-gate the riders and have their gates fall in the sequence of how they were on the last official lap. Hell, you could even set it up where each gate riders gate dropped x amount of seconds after the rider in front of them based on how far behind they were at the end of the last official lap. So if Deegan had an 8 second lead, his gate would fall, and then 8 seconds later the rider in 2nd place gate would fall. It's not that difficult.
they cant even get gates to drop at the same time at all events, how the hell is this going to work.
Dont think anyone is interested in investing in this for the 2-3 restarts a year
I guess you're right, we can just hope the guy points the flag at the riders in the correct order and hopefully no one loses race or championship bonuses because of a mistake.
To be fair. The OP idea of the single gates dropping at the correct timing makes the most sense on paper. BUT they don't have gate technology like that yet. & It would cost too much to make. So they won't make it.

It seems like Feld and MX sports could make the investment in 2 gates. One for use at the current event and one headed to the next event to be installed. It isn't rocket surgery. To me, having Dirt Wurx provide gates for SX and then rely on whatever Janky garbage the mc tacks have is inconsistent and bush league. Having a single system that is consistent couldn't possibly be that expensive. Especially since it would basically be a one time investment other than transportation and maintenance.
You would line them up in order, inside gate is first, second is second etc. 40th is outside. It’s not that difficult of a concept.
having built a regular old fashion backwards falling gate, it’s complicated enough to get perfect with the weight of the gate twisting towards the ends, keeping every hoop and pin from getting damaged.
Plus the whole point of a continuous gate is so each gate falls at the same time on purpose. So the main starts are equal for every one.
What's wrong with a staggard start re-start?
So he loses his lead time, same as Nascar, F1, even Moto GP does a full gate re-start.
He came in too hot and crashed, shit happens, wear a helmet.
Instead of making some new magical gate you could just line them up in order of where they were, going down the gate from first to last, and instead of dropping each gate just wave the flag and the first guy goes and then each guy takes off after the guy to his left goes.
That or you could just do the staggered start like in sx that makes the most sense.
There is nothing wrong with the staggard restart and it works great.
The thing we all agree on is that the restart that far into the race is absolute insanity. I was at the race and talking to my friends about how I’ve never seen a staggered restart in MX before, but this is obviously what we will have here. Then they completely reracked them … but didn’t reset the time. Make that make sense. Obviously they need to do the staggered start for MX and anyone who wasn’t on the lead lap just get pulled off the track.

Couldn't they do it exactly how they do now except have someone with a stopwatch and the last lap gaps written down tell the flagger when to wave the next rider ? The leader had an 8 second gap ? Ok send him off and then 8 seconds later wave the next guy off and on don the line. Same idea as the individual dropping gates only manual. All they need is an extra guy counting seconds between each position and yelling at the flagger to wave the net guy in line back onto the track.
i think the staggered start is fine, but it would be easy enough to use a stop light type system. they could easily program it to turn green for each gap between riders.

A.) It looks dumb, so what youre typing is dumb
or
B.) the change in capitalization is reflected in a change in your voice which would sound like you are whining if it was verbal
