Anyone know why he doesn’t have a clutch lever on his 450?
Anyone know why he doesn’t have a clutch lever on his 450?
Cus you don’t need it
was wondering the same thing... guessing so he doesn't try and ride it like a 250 and overuse the clutch ...
It's a Stark Varg in disguise!
Star has been having their riders train on 450s a bunch this Summer. Those 450s appear to have Rekluse auto clutches in them, so the clutch lever can be removed, and they have the rear brake pedal removed quit often too.
Trying to instill good habits and roll speed.

Same video Bennick also had no clutch
When you see the handlebars with out the clutch perch it really makes a guy understand how strong handlebars have to be! There’s so much force and such a large distance from the bar clamps it’s a wonder they don’t break or bend more often.
I understand the clutch piece, but the rear brake?
I’d guess so they don’t slide in with the rear locked and then squirt out with a lot of wheel spin. Would make sense for training SX 90s and 180s (pic above looks to be SX track). I don’t know what it would do for outdoors though.
The not being able to grab the rear brake in the air would scare me..
but I am not good enough to be on Star Yamaha, so what do I know?
Seems weird to me you have dudes who are that damn good on a bike, like part of the world's elite, and you also have guys watching their every move and everything the bike does...
And they still physically remove the clutch and rear brake, rather than just telling them not to use them and having the coaches/spotters/etc enforcing it.
I don't know, Star clearly knows better and their program is working great, it just seems weird.
It helps a lot with learning to keep corner speed up
Deegan already has pretty crazy corner speed. If Star keeps this method up, the kid’s gonna risk going back in time.
You've got if backwards, he will go forward in time...
Use to be take the seat and rear brake lever off back in the day to practice good form and technique.
Of course that was on old YZ 80s not 450f.
Back in the day, my buddy's dad would take his seat off to teach him to ride standing up.
Back in the day, I believe Gary Jones and others would train without a seat. Thought being it would help them keep their feet up
This is nothing new, Alec Wright from Team Green used to make his riders ride with bent bars, no seat, no front or rear brake.
Yeah, in my day we didn’t even have handlebars, we had to physically grab each fork leg with our hands. Well, I call them hands, we only had two fingers on each, we were poor. Seats ? We dreamed of seats. You kids today got it good. Burp.
Pit Row
Back in the late 60's we did this all the time, no seat and no rear brake. When I got to Germany in 73 again I used the no seat no brake on my CZ's.
Take your rear brake off in the mountains will teach you all about the front brake, we did this while riding the hills above the Cle Elum Coal Piles in the 60's. After a few days of this the front brake is a very natural.
Not if the Flux Capacitor is fluxing corrrctly.
So that's why Star didn't want Deegan's bike claimed, they didn't want anybody discovering the Flux Capacitor!
Jeff Walker did a video about this not too long ago.
What i don't quite understand is that the rekluse clutch ends up serving the purpose of the clutch lever in a turn when trying to teach roll speed and not use the clutch as a crutch. The only thing it eliminates is fanning the clutch on corner exit, which maybe that's the point.
Ah, an AI generated “photo”. Zoom in. Look at her hand.
This has been a thing for a very long time. Only difference is they used to point the lever either straight up or straight down.
Thanks for the info thought it might of been a rekluse but I figured they still needed a clutch lever
That's totally the point. Keep speed up and you won't have to use the crutch that is working the clutch on corner exit. Without a rekluse it would be way easier to stall and downshifts would be super harsh
Clutch lever is absolutely not needed when you run a Rekluse auto clutch. I like to start my bike and click it in gear and ride away with my left hand off the bars just to see if people are paying attention. lol
In general riding/racing I still use the clutch the Rekluse is just nice in tight stuff where the engine would otherwise stall. KTM 350's are pretty well known for flame outs and it eliminated it. They are teaching good habits, I use mine to hide my bad habits.. hahaha
Not sure why so many people are shocked about training without a clutch. I mentioned in another thread a while ago about doing one handed figure 8 drills and people acted like it was the stupidest thing they ever heard. I looked at it as a drill to reinforce squeezing with my knees and utilizing my core more than my hands.
This is 100% true! I acquired a mint/used 2012 RMZ450 several years back with a Rekluse already installed…My first experience with this wonder-device and they work SO well it feels like cheating! After I got used to having it in the bike, I’d forget about it and not bother to put the bike in neutral. While sitting in the “hold area” before a moto I absentmindedly blipped the throttle and the bike instantly shot forward/squirted out from under me resulting in a “crash” before I even got on the track! 😝
I’m sure every other racer made a mental note “watchout for this spode” and figured I was the biggest goon they’d lined up with in a while! I made sure to NEVER stop and sit with the bike in gear after that little embarrassing fiasco! 😎 👍❗️
Good plan B training for what to do if something breaks
