Thanks everyone for your responses, I'm working on some of the suggestions and will let you know which ones I choose, BUT I still need more!! Present and Past ...

I'm working a project and I'm looking for some feedback and help from the biggest SX fans out there.... The focus is on great comebacks from past and present Supercross riders. A comeback can constitute a crash in a specific event and came back to podium that event or even a crash or set back (concussions, broken bones, etc) and came back two years later to win a championship or at least top 3. These are just some examples but anything is up for discussion. REMEMBER - I'm looking for the BEST in history. As an incentive, I will provide a REALLY cool prize pack to all stories I choose to use and will contact you once chosen... looking for entries by end of the day Monday, December 7th!! I'll pick up to 5-8 stories!

Happy hunting ... Looking forward to some stories!!

RC in 02, I believe cold cocked himself at A1, had to helped off the track. Came back and still won the championship. Ranks up there pretty high imo. That race, I believe was NA8 Dawgs only 450 sx win and the first win for the new Honda crf450. Not positive though.

RC in 2005. Sat out the 2004 SX season recovering from ACL surgery. Was basically dropped by Honda, signed with Suzuki for the 2005 season. Came back and won the SX title, putting an end to the "Suzuki curse"

The memory is foggy, but it was the L.A. Colesium, '86 I think, maybe '87. Ricky Johnson was involved in a first lap crash, got up nearly last and started charging. Meanwhile Guy Cooper worked to the front and held a solid lead ahead of Jeff Ward. Cooper seemed to be on his way to his first Supercross win. But....with just a lap or three to go RJ catches him and the battle ensues with RJ taking the lead with one lap to go. NO ONE in the stands was sitting down during that last lap!

Damon Bradshaw's 125 race that was mentioned earlier.

RC's 2002, and 2005 series comeback.

James Stewart last year

I missed James' Indy '07 race. I wish someone would upload that on the internet.

One that really stands out in my mind is Huston '94. McGrath, up to that point would get the holeshot and check out. Everyone just kind of associated his 15 second leads to holeshots, and doubted he could win if he got a bad start. Well, he proved his critics wrong that night. 15th or so place start, and just weaseled his way up into the lead.

That was '87. I was there for the '86 race and RJ won without much difficulty. I think one of the greatest comebacks was Bob Hannah breaking his leg in '80, and having two more dismal seasons with Yamaha. At that point ,it looked like the Hurricane was down to a summer breeze. Then signing with Honda, and winning the Daytona supercross in '83, giving Bailey, RJ, Ward, O'mara, Lechein, and the rest of the new guys all they could handle that year until a wrist injury slowed his charge.

Not to mention winning Daytona again in '85, and capping off his career with a win at the '87 des Nations, and a GP win in Europe in '88.

RJ one sounds like a winner. Bit before my time.

One that sticks with me:
91-92 ish. MC & Budman on peak honda. Think it was vegas or san jose. MC down in the first turn, run away win.

There are lots of great comeback rides.

The first one I thought of was Damon Bradshaw at LasVegas 1991 (I think). He got stuck in the gate and went on a mission through the pack to get second place. To add to that drama was the leaders taking each other out.

Great race!

RC, Pontiac, 2002 (?). Ricky loops out over a kicker on the fastest part of the track and ragdolls 20 yards while the entire field passes by (think it was lap 3 while chasing down Ernie, who held the lead). I'll never forget Ricky picking up a mangled bike with his visor torqued so badly that it acted like a blinder over the left side of his helmet.

Meanwhile, an epic race takes place up front, with an untold number of lead changes. Eckman and Bailey are nearly breathless trying to keep pace with the battle being waged between DV, Lusk, Ferry, Ramsey, and MC. On about lap 12, Davey chimes in from the field with "Guys, the fastest rider on the track now is RIcky!" About that same time the camera focuses down a fast whoop section, with the leaders charging towards the corner and a red #4 entering the picture.

A few laps later the race's most memorable moment occurs, as Ricky, twisted visor, bent bars, etc, passes MC by hitting a triple and staying low. Jeremy looks to his left as RC grabs for a tear-off, and must think to himself "what is that guy made of?"

Ricky would eventually finish second to Nate's one and only SX win. RC did benefit from some miscues by other riders, but as we have seen so many times, Ricky rose to the occassion and salvaged results when many others might have called it a day.

The combination of racers, ESPN coverage, and commentary made this race one for the ages. I still pull out the tape of that race and watch it on occassion. Like right about now...

Since you mentioned the year, rider and bike, I was at the Coliseum mud race that year and Henry led for 19 laps, with a comfortable lead, on the white 400F.
Half the race, we kept asking wtf is on the #103 KX250 coming through the pack?? Well it was one of Tortelli's first appearances.
By lap 18, ST ended up on Henry's rear wheel, DH then stalled in a corner on lap 19 and of course the hand-built 400 wouldn't fire, so Tortelli took the win.
For an individual event, that was a pretty good "come from behind" finish.

I think you may be a bit confussed, ST103 won in 1998 not in 1997.

the 1991 san jose sx,
guy cooper was leading 2-3 laps to go, matasevich either ran into and or took out guy cooper , that opened the door for doug dubach to take a win, but damon bradshaw who got stuck in the gate came within 5 ft of passing doug. i was yelling so loud was horse for days, i can remember my division officer( was in the us navy at the time) asking me whats wrong with your voice, so i told him the story and he was like o lol
