Billy claimed on Pings podcast that he wants to try and qualify for a main at 40 years old. Who thinks he can? I think so. He has already asked Star Yamaha to lease a couple bikes. Good on him for sure.

Poll

Can Lano do it?

He wasn’t amazing at 20. Fast…but not amazing. I doubt he’d suddenly be amazing at 40.

Ego will get you hurt.

Chad Reed is one of the greatest ever and he was consistently in LCQs his final couple years, without missing a season, and at age 36-37.

I have a hard time believing a 40 year old Laninovich, who hasn’t raced since … ??? can qualify for a main event.

Did he point out of 250s? If not, I could see him making it in on the weaker coast, but I have a hard time believing he can do it on a 450.

He hasn't raced in so long he could race either class.

Absolutely he could. One of the most naturally gifted guys in the last 30 years, plus he said he’s into it again, and he has his old boy from Showa doing his suspension. Easy.

That would be so rad if he did. Dude has style for days I’ve always been a fan, I see him riding local  every time he decides he wants to ride again, straight outa the woodwork.

More likely a National with the depleted field, but with everyone back for SX? Mmm tough one

Laughing Not a chance in hell, he may not even qualify for the night program. Laughing Motocross riders don't get faster with age or by sitting on the couch.

Not to sound like I’m sipping the haterade, but if he even goes through with this, I have a hard time believing he’ll even qualify for the night show let alone make a main.

Jump for show, corner for dough! Dude had style for days and was really fast on Amsoil Honda. I think he can do it

I’d avoid betting on that one. Billy has exceptional talent on a DirtBike and making the night show is not out of the question. Making the main will be a big challenge and would be a very impressive accomplishment . But if any 40 year old could do it, Billy is one of the guys on the list… JMHO

Not sure about qualifying, but I'm here for the absolutely insane whips he'll throw in practice. Dude could toss it with the best of them.

If he races 250, no problem on night show. He can do it. Some of the kids that make night shows can barely put a lap together on SX on 250s...

Main will be a stretch but...I actually don't think it's impossible for him. We'll see.

Best answer. Billy has so much natural talent that he'll be a threat when he's 50. Making the main is going to be tough, though. I'll be rooting for him win or lose, though.

I disagree, won't make night show in either class. Nothing against him or his riding style but he didn't set the world on fire in his prime and age will get you every time. Dry But I don't think he will even try as I think reality will set in

Has one 125/250 SX win, eight podiums, 16 top fives, 26 top tens in his pro racing career. I wish I was good enough to not set the world on fire.

In the 250 class half the guys cant put laps together or rip the whoops consistent. I believe, Billy with good starts could make a 250 main and I wouldn't be surprised, night show, not a problem. He has so much technical ability and talent that just riding a good consistent lap and nailing the whoops will put him in the night show without even having fitness.

I wish I had that kind of career to but doesn't change the facts. He was good but he also had knees like a 80 year old man. A good career but he needs to stay retired at least on a national level. Again, I seriously doubt he will even try.

Who gets to say if the man needs to stay retired? If the man ends up making the night show, he deserves to be there.

I voted yes he could. But this answer is spot on and completely changes my mind

IMO, Chad wasn't fully committed in the last few years of his career.

Brayton had no issues making the main events but was fully committed to training and riding.

If Chad would've put in 100% effort, I think he could have made the main event at 40.

Can Laninovich who hasn't raced SX since 2012, make a main event? I don't know, but I don't see why he couldn't make the night show if he's putting in all the work.

Does anyone know if Laninovich will be documenting his journey?
