of the riders that are sporting a gopro or something similar. Why aren't  there more videos of these gopro type videos at the pro motocross level. I see quite a few of these clips from MXGP races but hardly any from the AMA races. Somebody needs to fix this ASAP.

GoPros/cameras on helmets were banned a couple of years ago due to safety concerns (some of it suggest/tied to Brian Moreau's injury).

"What happened to GoPro race footage?"

See how easy that was?

PS - These threads don't seem like BobbyM, I hope I'm right about that.

I enjoy the GoPro type stuff, but drone footage has changed the game for me.

Bobby, you forgot the three dots, …,  in your thread title. You are loosing your edge, I didn’t know if it was you or an imposter! 😂

Behind the scenes it might have something to do with the production company claiming they bought the rights to commercially record the race. To avoid a conflict with the legality of that, they just claimed it a safety issue?

Didn't they get banned originally because Sony came out with that stupid 360 view knock off GoPro and Sony was the series camera sponsor at the time?

I'd love for them to get and work in the shoulder cam they use in MotoGP.

No, the 360 cameras and all other FPV view cameras were banned because go pro was the series sponsor, only go pros were allowed

So in MXGP gopro's are allowed but not the pro motocross series?  Makes no sense to me.

I'm sure the riders would love to have some self footage from  these races. Great thing to show yer friends or the kids/grand kids in a few years.

Shit's gotta change  and there also should be a display of the riders heart rate, body temp, etc on the screen when they are on camera.

Go Pros are still allowed, just not on the helmets. I also believe riders are limited to how much on track footage theyre allowed to show, but maybe that was just previous years

Just use a j hook and the chest strap. That's what I have been doing this year and last year....looks a little faster too, which helps in my case lol

You can run a camera mounted on the rider and use a bunch of it if your an athlete using it for personal content needs.

As media, I could get a rider to run one and use it for different purposes, but no one wants to run a chestie mount during a race.

Pros won’t agree to that mounting during a race weekend.

MotoGP is a terrible comparison as the cameras are mounted to the bike.

Considering how much effort is put into helmets these days I can’t disagree with the safety notion. Secondly, riders hate running them at the races.

I’d love to see a solution built into the helmet like F1 is using now.

The shoulder cam is not, and by being located on the rider's shoulder it may be the most stable place on the rider-bike package (and may work better in MX because of the different rider postures).  I imagine all of those packages also have some kind of image stabilization at that level, but MotoGP definitely has a different budget.

There are no riders willing to wear the chest mount?  Is it that they all don't want to wear one , or that they wouldn't be able to share the content without getting in trouble?

I've always been the biggest GoPro video fan on planet earth. I've watched every 30min + 2 lap videos from RV , James, Jessy Nelson , ect... multiple times. I can't get enough of it to be honest.

I thought I heard that this year was different, and riders could record and share ( The outdoors anyways )  as long as the camera wasn't mounted to the helmet?  Is that the case , or am I imagining things?

Im slow as shit, so the chest mount doesn't bother me at all. My friend who is very fast wore it one time and absolutely hated it, he kept bumping it against the cross-bar pad.

Granted this was the version 1 go pro which was bulkier and heavier, but I could see pros wanting to limit any possible distraction.

They can share and utilize the footage, it just can't come from a helmet-mounted camera. I can't get anyone to use the chest mount for even a lap.

All the motogp onboard cameras are separated into components so the small lens can be mounted in a particular spot but the rest of the larger electronics are able to be housed separately on the bike.

The modularity of the gopro makes it inconvenient to mount to a rider. MX bikes bounce around too much to mount the camera to the bike. Remember the terrible onboard video at the WSX races?

From a safety and convenience standpoint, cameras should be designed such that they are integrated into the gear. Cameras have been able to improve quality while maintaining a price point such that a 4k camera helmet visor or chest protector could probably be sold for around $400 or $500. You would have lens and image sensor in the best spot, then the electronics and battery in a different spot for better packaging.
