I'll play devils advocate feel free to blast me.

Is it possible that's a pre-pro bike and they didn't have any pipes for it so a Husky mechanic took and rewelded a 23 pipe to work on a 24?

You could be onto something as that is definitely a full factory bike that isn't available to the public yet, lots of off road dudes on Instagram are digging into every detail.

This is straight from FMF's marketing material on the pipe:

FMF

That ain't exactly weld porn either, but as other's have said if it is a good functional weld, the rest doesn't matter.

That weld is much much nicer than the one on Billy's bike. Nice and consistent the whole around, toes blend with the parent metal (not undercut or raised).

If I could hold the pipe in my hands at a dealer and it looked like the one in your picture I woul would happily buy it. If it looked like the other on, no chance. Also if I had to commit to buy it sight unseen I'm personally not rolling the dice incase I get a hideous one.

Also, I ride a husky TE300 and I dig the overall look of this bike especially with a works pipe, but welds like that ruin it for me.

Do you guys ever ride your motorcycles?? If you're going to get "ruined" because of a weld then how are you going to deal with dents and scraps after actually riding?

Yes I do ride and ride a lot, But when I open up my new works pipe and a part of the draw is the aesthetic welds, and they look like some blind dude welded them with his feet, it's not really acceptable. Sure it may work, but damn, take some pride in your work. Some of you guys have low standards and that's why garbage shit keeps selling.

Right, so dubbing it as works equipment is weird.

It is a pipe -- one that is significantly cheaper than the stocker, and may have some advantages and disadvanatages. None of which have anything to do with it being 'works.'

The longer you look at that pipe, the worse it gets.

I'd have to disagree with that, ive had a couple split at the welds and start weeping, and have seen others online...

I agree, it's not TIG porn quality, but it's perfectly fine. The original is not...

All MXers imagine riding when driving past a golf course, same as all welders look at welds and criticize them even if they're perfectly functional.

It's not the first time that FMF build quality has been brought up on Vital. Last time it had something to do with the welds as well.

I fail to understand how that shit weld slipped through quality control.

What's even more concerning is the welder himself. That's bad work.

When I worked for FMF the welders were all top notch and that would never have happened.

Not you. The guy or gal that produced it. Then someone pro union chimed in and said "no it's someone not good enough to BE union that produced it ('rat')."

I agree with you, the welds are bad and finishing matters. Excellence matters. I had a guy make a custom car exhaust for me and he kept me there all day until his welds were done and ground perfect because he refused to have his name on mediocre albeit functional work.

Thank you for clearing that up for me in such great detail.

Since we’re so caught up on schematics here, show me where FMF said that it was a “works” pipe anywhere.

I had to bend the end of the mid pipe on a brand new 4.1 to get it to fit with the silencer. It came egg shaped straight out of the box. Pretty nuts for a thousand dollar exhaust system.

This right here. Price for new exhaust are crazy, you want to turn out crap like that sell it for $250, you want to charge $1k for “hand made in USA” take some pride and reject crappy welds and fitment issues. Are the ones defending this quality actually buying these products and are happy with them? Pretty sure little D isn’t going to send you a free pipe for defending his companies honor

If you have a 4-stroke (or a KTM Group 2-stroke) and you're not on a budget. Buy Akrapovic, there is really no competition when it comes to fit, finish, overall quality and performance.

I'd go with the company making MotoGP and superbike exhaust over anything else.

FMF calls their raw pipe the factory fatty. PC calls them works.  Its just a marketing term, why are you so caught up on it?

And I've had a few factory fatty's and the welds look like crap on all of them.  But they have held together fine and made good power.

So you have a few people bitching about FMF on the internet and a pic of a weld that isn't pretty so that makes the company and its owners not prideful of their products? I swear some of you in the Vital mafia just have to have something to bitch about. I do not expect Donny or Jr to send me anything for defending them.

I, along with thousands of others have had very satisfying experiences from a quality and performance standpoint to defend FMF products. To whine about fucking ugly welds on a dirtbike exhaust is pretty damn funny. Yes, parts for bikes are not cheap but, in all honesty, if you feel like everyone is getting ripped off from this anti-pride USA company then why don't you invest and start your own exhaust company and offer it to the public for less than an OEM system with better performance?!?

Oh, for the record, we have ran PC exhaust as well and every one of their welded-on badges were falling off in no time. Did that lead me to complain about poor craftsmanship on Vital and claim Mitch didn't take pride in his products? Nope the exhaust performed as expected so I could care less about the PC badge being on there.

its just a matter of values/perspective. one's not wrong but, the Japanese don't really do it that way. anything hand finished is pressured to be perfect. gotta be able to take pride in one's work. things over here tend to be more pragmatic, but i mean, Detroit went to shit for a reason...

Dirty Points. More like Shitty Points, which yours is. They have been called works or raw finish forever. You one of the crappy FMF welders there bud? Seem to be kinda upset people just ask for a quality product. It is possible to have good welds, that's what the debate is about. It's a visual thing, same reason people buy nice jeans and all that bs. I just choose to dress my bikes up.
