I have a 13 YZ250 which has a PC pipe and shorty on it now . Is there any other combo that makes the power smoother ? I'm so used to 4ts that I hate the hit this thing has . I haven't ridden one in 5 years or so . Thanks in advance. . Oh and currently have 22 350 also
FMF and Bills are both smoother and broader than the PC. They don't have the ultimate mid-top that the PC does but fill in the bottom-mid better. I prefer the Bills the most. It's very similar to FMF but feels maybe just a tad stronger in the bottom-mid. You can also adjust the feel of the power with jetting to make it smoother or put on a light flywheel weight.
Yes it's called the gytr weighted flywheel will make it smoother than any pipe will.
1. stop riding the four-stroke so that you can get used to the YZ250 = seat time!
2. good jetting.
You can try a few different pipe and silencer combos but they are really just for fine tuning for the average guy, IMHO ... the salt and pepper on the steak.
Cheapest ways, fatter jetting, taller gearing, retard timing, fly wheel weight, possibly play with throttle slack.
More expensive ways, different pipe, long silencer (even Turbinecore), head mods, cylinder mods.

I do have a 9oz flywheel weight on on now , maybe I'll try different pipe combo as the whole engine was just re-done . It is fun and light as hell
If you have the stock silencer, put it on and see what you think.
I rode my 350 back to back with my yz250 today and honestly the 350 is SO much faster to me, it makes the Yamaha feel like a mini. Something that is good to check out is the timing, slight retardation can make the bike a little stronger up top and take some of the slap out. I still think the YZ250 comes on so strong in the mid that it leaves my soul 50 feet behind me. I know that sounds contradictory but the yamaha stops pulling after that and the 350 literally pulls to the limiter. The OEM pipe is regarded as being really smooth and so is the FMF as mentioned. Moving to a 120 rear tire and dropping your sprocket size can also help with traction and punch but I'm worried the bike will be hard to keep on the pipe if you sink it in a berm. This always frustrated me when you come in hot and it falls off and then youre blasting the clutch (I'm aware this is rider error largely).
I am NOT trying to sell you stuff or buy yours but I am keeping my eye out for a PC pipe. Let me know if you want to swap some things around. I think I bought your white VFX-Evo too I think - not sure if that was you. Let me know!
Good advice above.
#1: Stock or FMF pipe. PC is known for having a big dyno number with a big hit.
#2: PC regular length silencer
#3: If still too much hit, retard the timing slightly
I tried a small flywheel weight at one point, and did not like it.
Yeah I do that I have a PC pipe platinum and shorty PC silencer I love them bike Don't like to hit
Damn talking text sucks sorry for the misspelling lol
Correct squish, retard timing a degree or two
Unfortunately there's a lot of rider error in this equation lol
Yep, one of the main advantages of 4-strokes, especially KTM 250/350. YZ250 signs off at like 8800 rpm. KTM 350 keeps pulling until almost 14,000.. lol That's a lot of usable power and a lot less shifting.
There’s a decent size jump at a track by me out of a corner and I hit it in third, but 100% I could also do it in second or fourth lmao. On the two stroke, if I slip in the corner beforehand and can’t catch a shift I’m either banging the clutch and seat bouncing it or I just have to roll. Yeah, four strokes rock lmao.
I still think that once you’re all trained back up you can go almost as fast though. I’m learning a ton about general setup just owning it because it demands knowledge. You can’t just hop on and go like a 2020+ 4T.
This.
O-ring chain = Poor man's traction control.. lol
Yup.. there's a jump here out of a corner.. 2nd gear easy on my 350, from the inside. When I get on my TC125, take the outside, 2nd, grab 3rd, everything the bike has.. LOL As the day goes on and the outside rut gets blown out or choppy.. nope... need every single inch of runup. There are entire tracks I can ride in 3rd on my 350 but on my 125 it's 2nd every corner and 4th or 5th on every straight.. lots of shifting in the air over jumps, etc. These modern 4-strokes really are cheater bikes.

Thanks guys I decided to just sell the 2 stroker after all . I'm old and like the 4ts much better as they are just easier to ride for me
I think my theory may be wrong on how to make the YZ more rideable then. I want it to keep pulling but realistically it's not going to pull long like a four stroke. Do people typically try to open the powerband up sooner? It would be nice to ride it more in the middle and not always clutching the rpms up (spinning) everywhere. May be good to roll the bike more instead of just hammering the throttle every chance.
I'm still of the mindset of "if the throttle isnt open you're losing time" and I have to try hard to get out of that mindset.
You can make them sign off much later and pull way harder. My mostlystock YZ250 fell off like a pile of bricks. Most 250 two strokes do. So did my TMR YZ295. But my TMR YZ315 feels like it revs forever and smoother, even more so then my 20 YZ450F (even though it undoubtedly revs higher).
Just a little know how and spending some cash makes a big difference.
In your opinion, what is the most direct and cost effective way to spread out the powerband on the top? I was thinking a little retarded timing and a PC pipe
First would be fresh engine, top end, bottom.
DEP pipe, long silencer. Retard the timing. I like to run a heavy fww. Helps in a lot of ways, and keeps it from that feeling of falling on it's face. Slightly less snappy, broader. Make sure it's jetted really well. C12 could help keep it consistent,. Could open up the airbox with some uni filters
Not too expensive for head/cyl mods. Tom Morgan can build a screamer.
More expensive would to build a stroker, but then you're looking at over $2,000 but it's worth it.
