Orange RM400

Edited Date/Time 1/24/2012 1:06pm
Did Suzuki ever make orange RM400's, or did this guy just cut loose with a rattle can after falling in love with the Dukes of Hazzard a decade or so ago?

I just shake my head when I see some of the things people do to bikes with a can of paint.

Don't think they ever did them orange, but they obviously made silver RM's somewhere around the globe. I ordered a bunch of RM plastic for 80 models and had the stuff come in silver metallic. A little aircraft paint stripper and a light pressure wash had them all nice, shiny and yellow. Maybe they had road going RMX's back then in Europe or Australia? Somebody chime in here.

Thanks for the replies.

When I'm in a better financial position, there will be a 1980 RM400 in my garage. I had one in high school and have fond memories of the beast. Every once in awhile I'll peruse Craigslist to see what the old iron is going for, this one happened to pop up today.

RM400, JT1, and a CBX for my future shop display.

Hey Matt,
Did you race in the central valley [calif] open class in 1980? I raced there during that time on a canam 370 for the hanford cycle center, mostly in the intermediate class.
Just curious if we raced against each other.

Nope.
I moved down here 4 years ago from Nor Cal, and in 1980 I was ten years old riding a JT1. The RM400 wheelied into my life 5 years later.

Maney has an orange Suzuki. I took this shot and many other vintage machines at the CALVMX race on August 9th at Perris Raceway.

The first year TM400 definitely was orange. No excuse for that travesty in the ad, though.

for guys that had one.

Good looking bike tho. That pipe alone is a piece of art.

Back in the 70's Jackson Young (a Florida racer) use to paint all of his RM's orange. His dad use to own Action Park MX in Jacksonville.

Mmmmm, that looks like a whole bunch of fun.

I would imagine you couldn't take a stock RM400 and add everything he has and spend less than 4K, right?

Well, the ohlins run over $750 alone. The Sun wheels would be about that, too, if they came through Buchanons. I guess it depends on what's paid for the base bike before restoration.

It's a question whether you like to build 'em. It takes time and the coin adds up pretty quickly on the big items and then the "little here, little there" details.

I still race with Jackson in our FL Vintage series. I'll see him Sunday at the annual awards party.

First race of the new season is Oct 4th.
