Much more things that happens in ”action”!

1-9 qualifying for finals is a joke, even a-ray can do that… almost… (Sorry dude) Grinning

EDIT: glad i could get some opinions on this!

I like semis, mostly because those guys who are going to run around 10th place in the main probably don't want to ride an LCQ every weekend.

I do prefer the Semi's....  Better than a top guy going down in the first turn and just needing the top 9 to make it in.

Didn't we get rid of semis because they are to cheap to put more dirt down and we were getting to the wooden boards every other weekend.

I think the only way Semi heats come back would be to cut the main from 20 min to 20 laps. Bringing them back would leave even less time for track tune-ups and having a 28 lap main with an even more beat up track would be ridiculous.

Unpopular opinion, the show of supercross works better without semis. Heats in the first half, track work and lcqs for halftime, and the mains to finish. Add 1 championship point for a heat win to make the action up front better.

Love the old format with the semis... bring em back!

Unfortunately,  the monopoly behind sx, does only what makes them the most cash... with zero regard to racers,  or the common consumer....

I was thinking track maintenance might have also been a contributor.  MX has followed lots of other sports (such as BMX and even RC racing) in that the tracks have gotten to be almost too perfect and there is an expectation.

It would be interesting to see how many folks that post on Vital that have never even seen a semi.  I know some will take that negatively, but it has been a long time since we have had semi's.  I liked them as well.  As a racer, it would definitely make getting to the main less stressful if you had an issue in your heats.  It also gives extra hope for the guys that are on the edge of that race pace.

It is a balance for sure...  I like the competitiveness of the having the Semi's.  But I think the networks prefer the 3 hour window for TV viability.

Here's an even more unpopular opinion...  Make the show 4 hours, put the Semi's back in and add a 12 minute 12-16 or 14-17 125cc support race.  Qualify in timed practice, top 20 in the main, nothing more.  Do all the track work needed.

I have never talked to anyone directly that wouldn't watch all of it if it was 4 hours instead of 3...

Not sure I follow.  Unless a top guy crashes out of a heat race, you generally end up with the same riders in the LCQ, because 18 riders used to qualify from Heats+Semis, just like 18 riders currently qualify from Heats only.

That's what the outdoors are for. Supercross was born a show and will always be a show.

Why not have 20 separate heats to decide each and every freaking gate pick.

I'm a big supporter of adding a 3rd regional class that's under 21 and making the 250 class a national class. I just don't think the semis added much to the event, triple crowns do a better job of mixing it up imo.

I think it made guys too tired and the mains showed it for the ones who had to ride semis and lcq’s. I’d much rather have them do 5 points for 1st, 3 for 2nd, and 1 for 3rd in the heats and maybe make them two laps longer.

I’ll take triple crowns all season long.  Leave all the qualifying shit for the morning/day. Thanks.

Or awesome depending on your point of view I guess. Laughing

I sound like a broken record on these posts but I'll give my $.02 again.  Comparing lap times on a track that changes every lap is stupid.  Drop the gate, lets have a race, and off we go. Some guys move on some guys are done.  If the track gets rough change the clickers.  We never needed to be Nascar-ized.  Just my $.02    Don't shoot me, from what I hear I'm a boomer so I can't help it.

Works better for who? The fans? Less racing = better? The riders? Never heard a one of them say they like no semi's better. Most welcome the additional track time.

I guess I should have elaborated on the 20 min to 20 laps thing for clarity: I'm fine with the track being more beat up, but what I do not enjoy is seeing lappers ruining the battles inside the top 10. So if we take away track maintenance time for semi races, then still have a 20 min main at places where the lap times are 47 sec, we end up with so much lapped traffic.

I mean, I'm digressing here now but maybe the solution should be to pull anyone before being lapped 2x.  Not to be a dick, but we often see guys doing the 801 out there, just rolling around.  I hate seeing a battle ruined because of that.

LOL, no. Most welcome a gate pick 1-8 for the main, not the extra track time from a semi.

Imo, the most boring/pointless race of the night and makes the heats more boring. Keep em dead.

Well, as I said, it works better for the show. As was mentioned earlier, semis force the "worst" racers to put in the most laps of the night. Going to longer, timed heats lcqs and mains give fans MORE racing than we had with semis and races that were determined by lap number not time.

I think he was referring to the 1 point for a heat race win idea. Like I said SX is a show with racing to get you in the door.

The reason they where determined by laps was because the times where over 1 minute. The reason they went to a timed main was because they where only racing for 15 minutes. Nothing to do with semi's. If you where to just say the real reason was because it works better for the promoter I will agree. Do the worst riders not need to log the most laps? Who does not like 3 chances to make the main other than the promoter?

You must not race because any healthy racer would welcome the opportunity to turn that eighth place heat into something better. After all you could be looking at 16th gate pick, lol.
