What makes SMX a “world” championship?

Just curious what makes the new SuperMotocross series a “world” championship?

Because they are calling it one. And most fans recognize that the riders in it are the best in the world.

Because anyone can call anything a world championship. There is no world championship in motocross.

Technically, I have always thought of it as when you have races around the world, but in this case, if you have riders from all around the world, that could be used as the basis for the title? We will definitely see riders from all across the globe.

SuperMotocross is AMA sanctioned, not FIM.

The AMA supercross, and motocross for that matter, is the best racing and the best series of their type in my opinion.

I also agree that, yes there are exceptions, generally speaking the world's best are racing those series. America has been, and still is, excellent for moto in general.

I still don't personally consider it a world championship, purely given the amount of rounds they have and all of them being in the US, but I get where they're coming from and I don't lose sleep over it, but it is odd, kind of a weird grey area due to the immense quality of the two AMA series.

It isn’t.

What I think it IS, would be the all around best riders in the world, going for the premier championship in the world, but that’s all taking place in the US, so it’s a completely badass national championship. But it’s still not a world championship and calling it a world championship devalues it with hyperbolic exaggeration..

The riders make it a world championship. The best riders in the world all want to come to the USA. That's how it is. And has been forever. Just because FIM claims to be the "international governing body of motocross" which is a made up title given to them by nobody. FIM doesn't own anything but those words on paper. I can have a world championship, you can have a world championship, ANYONE can have a world championship.

The AMA supercross series will always be the WORLD supercross championship. Its the biggest in the WORLD and they do it way better than that garbage we saw last weekend. Its not where you go, its where the riders are all from. Isn't MXdN a World Championship? Because its only held at one location a year. No one's crying about that detail.

Why keep beating a dead horse? Because they can call it that. Just like some will claim "world's best burger", or world's biggest this or tallest that. Is it necessary true? Probably not. Is it a little dumb? Probably. But at the end of the day who cares what they call it, we're still going to enjoy the racing

The concept is ok, but calling it a world championship and not venturing across the world makes it seem a bit cheesy and de-values the status IMO.

Honestly if they lost the ‘World’ from the title, it would seem a little more serious.

My local banger racing track crown a ‘world banger champion’ a handful of times a year it seems.. and all the drivers are locals.
Which completely devalues it.

I guess who wins it is champion of the world since there isn’t anyone else on the planet who could win it. There’s no debating that the AMA Supercross champ would possibly lose to a GP guy. Is the SX champ eligible to race if skipping the outdoors? Wondering if this will have Eli outside next year.

The Olympics aren’t the world championships for the majority of the participating sports. They have separate titles.

Which are held in a single country….Ice skating, track and field, Hockey ect… skiing is one that actually has a tour…to me it doesn’t matter where it goes it’s more about the competitors being from around the world and being the best at what they do…
