I think in those conditions and everything that was on the line, to get a 4th in that moto was incredible. I know there are motos with Stew, RC, Poto, where they actually won their motos on a 125 or 250, etc.

This has to be on the list of all time great motos!

Sexton and Tomac rode well enough not to lose anything. But Cooper had to go out their and earn this team that win, doing so with that amazing 4th place finish. And he was not far behind the leaders.

Considering that the USA hadn't won the MXDN in 11 years. And with everyone saying he was the weak link on the team, and with Tomac and Sexton doing just enough not to lose us anything.

Cooper shows up BIG time in that second moto and gets a 4th place finish!!

I mean, yeah he didn't win the moto, but that won the MXDN right there. Hands down.

Where do you think it ranks in MXDN moto history? Do you even consider it to be on the list?

Omara, Lammy, Roczen, Cairoli, Emig, there’s a few legendary small bore rides. We need J Sloan to give us a rundown

Impressive ride for sure but far from being on the list of iconic rides in moto history, though.

It ranks in between 3rd and 5th. The fact he was on the chopping block and not regarded as “team” worthy makes it a brilliant ride

I'm extremely grateful for his performance and it was certainly a clutch, great ride. But as far as history of great rides at MXoN, its not on the list. No disrespect to J Coop.

When I remember what kind of 250 performances we have seen from Herlings, Roczen, Villopoto, Prado, Lawrence, Hofer, Musquin on a mxon, Coopers ride this probably not even in the top 10. Not to downplay anything he did, he is a big reason for the USA win this weekend! But there is several riders who dominated the weekend on a 250, not even comparable.

Cooper did his part, big time. That was a solid ride; just what the Dr. ordered.

If you give it extra credit for the weather, it probably makes the top 10... without drilling down super deep, there are some really good MX2 rides out there.

Even Musquin's 4-3 in 2015 seems stronger.
Roczen had a 4th in 2012 (they won). (he put up a 2nd in 2011 and a 3rd in 2010)
Villopoto has 3 first place moto's in 2007 and 2008. This probably ranks #1 for me...
Of course the Johnny O 125 ride was remarkable.

There are others of course.

with the deep soft dirt at Red Bud this weekend, I feel like the 250 was at a bigger disadvantage than some of the 'other' great rides from small bore riders at different tracks. Would have been interesting to see what he would have done on a track like Unadilla or Budds. Either way, he killed it!

Stefan Everts won with his 250 Honda two stroke both heats, one against the 125cc bikes but his second one was against all big bore four strokes in the MXdN of 1999 in Brazil. Against Bartolini on his YZF400cc Yamaha was that year World Champion. The year before he did the same in the mud of Foxhill.

What Ryan Villopoto did, winning both his heats on the smallest bike back in Budds Creek, that one gave me nightmares.

Ken Roczen at Lake Wood Colorado, with an under powered Suzuki, that is also one of those moments I really remember about a rider going flat out on a 250cc bike.

Blake Baggett finishing 6th in Lommel, after his very bad first moto. Not that it deserves a place in the Hall of Fame but it was impressive how fast he was re-loaded and with some small adjustments he was racing totally different.

Roczen vs Tomac in 2013 on the 250s, absolutely flogged the rest of the field

Ok, I was bored and made a small top 250 performance list based on the last 20 years and included riders that in my opinion would be in front of Cooper. (really hard to find proper results before that). Keep in mind this is just based on invidual performance.

The small bike result is always a huge factor, especially more-so these days given the classes are scored outright.

I really really really do wish they went back to class scoring. I think it more often made for interesting tactical decisions and scenarios mid-race, involved the team/pit-crews more etc. ie you don't need to pass that guy, let this guy go etc...

Now the predominant tactical factor is getting the 250 guy a start against 450s.

Hannah in the mud on a 125, which he hadn't raced in 10 years, when he was basically retired at Unadilla in 1987 should be on EVERY list. As well as Johnny O'Mara at Maggiora vs. the 500's on a track with actual elevation changes.

If you're talking little bike rides, then RV in 07 and even his 06 ride was underrated, Kenny in Colorado, Malin in 94 of course, Lamson/Tortelli the following years and of course O'Show in 86.

All class rides, Kiedrowski in 93 and I think Stanton in 91 both rescued team wins at the death, Lechien in Gaildorf I think 85 looked like he was just on another planet in the videos. Everts in Brazil made everyone look amateurish. RC on the CR250 against Everts in I think 03 was ridiculous and anytime I see the old Magoo videos I wonder how the fuck he didn't break the bike in half.

I get that people are excited,Cooper was brilliant, but you only have to go back to the last MXdN at Red Bud to see both Prado and Hunter Lawrence had better results in worse conditions.
