I'm not sure it's so much of a "when men were men" thing, as much as it is a "when men knew nothing about nutrition" thing, but there's a scene in Todd Huffman's 1980 USGP movie where Andre Malherbe gets to his pit after a scorching hot 45 minute moto and upends a bottle of Coke like it was an ice cold glass of high quality H2O.
They may have been somewhere, where you couldn't trust the water...

Looking at the first few pictures had me so caught up in a moment. I bet they were sitting at the drive-in eating dinner in a convertible thinking “why the heck do my arms get swollen when I ride and how can I fix it?”
There’s something special about the early stages of things, especially this sport.

My Grandpa use to work on my bike all the time in the early 90s, always had a smoke going. They lived about fifteen minutes from Whitney. I was all of ten years old and he’d have a cig going while doing something involving the gas and even then I stood back, haha. I’d foul a plug and he would pull his lighter out and try to clean it up. It worked a time or two. Good times.

My kid showing off his fresh footpeg to the armpit gash with Grandma that happened in a big multi bike wipeout in practice. His Suzook was still ready to rock and he raced two classes that day up front.

Tooting my own horn a little. 1972 open MX race on a 1958 BSA Gold Star 500. I was 15. How about the military combat boots, brown jeans, Fruit of the Loom white t-shirt, welders gloves and a thrift store red metal flake open face helmet. No number plates just electrical tape number 11 on the tank. Loved those simple times. Was a lot of fun back then and not so serious.

I was 15 and didn't know any better. I did bend both foot pegs off that jump though.

Couple of things come to mind when looking at the picture.

Whiskey Throttle: Ping could have a new logo...

The old school term "When in Doubt--GAS IT" does not apply here.
Heavy on the Throttle does, along with this drunk loud mouth dude who was hanging on the fence at a GH National when they had a Women's race he kept yelling "THROTTLE'S ON THE RIGHT!!!!" Laughing

But I must say at least he's prepared with Gloves and Sunglasses....Cool

Here is a shot the following year 1973. I still raced the BSA in the open class but I did have a new Suzuki TM250 to race in the 250 class.

Sometime earlier that same year at the same track.

This is the exact moment when this poor chap finally came to understand the term "powerband".

Haha Good observation!!!
Well it's obvious he's a Man's Man so my guess is he probably has a big wad of SKOAL chewing tobacco before showing his buddies how it's done! Laughing
