It was a perfect storm back in the late 90s. You had big name guys like Buddy, Denny, Willow, Bradshaw, etc who could still be competitive at Supercross racing the series. Plus the Dash for Cash and at the time Freestyle was taking off. The highlight for alot of people was the jump off, Mad Mike and Clifford were doing (at the time) amazing tricks that blew the crowds minds. It was a great era. Oh ya plus 2 strokes 😉.

Antunez will always be the King of AX, as he absolutely dominated while the series was still at it’s peak. I’d pick Demuth and then Bowers, but can understand that some would flip those two the other way around.

Dennis Hawthorne isn’t as well known to a lot of moto fans, but his name definitely deserves to be in the conversation.
If you don't know who Dennis Hawthorne is then you can't be that much of a fan... And not just from AX

I mentioned Bradshaw. Another ax winner Heath Voss. About the only riders that didn’t race ax was MC, Emig , Ryno and Huffman. Rockford used to b the 1st round and always sold out. Your 1st chance to see the new bikes that added to the excitement.

The guy coming up to watch is Michael Hicks. He's amazing indoors.
*Honorable mention to Jeff Gibson too, he just didn't do as many and did SX instead, but if he did, he would have been in the conversation.
Gaddis was just before my time but his corner speed was unreal and like no other. Cliff Palmer was good too.
Shoutout to my boy Tommy Hofmaster who has 15 career AX wins and the 2004 Dash for Cash title. We traveled together doing AX for 12 years. Time of my life.

The field was so stacked early on it was fantastic to see and it was two nights of racing every stop. Buddy, Gaddis, & Denny were always great but in the early years no one messed with Dennis Hawthorne anywhere...great memories

AX was a great place for the B teams to race and be competitive.

It 100% Sucked Josh Demuth’s AX career was cut short while he was on a championship roll.

I was at Baltimore when Bradshaw’s AX career ended he would have been tough one to beat.

Sorry bout that, I glossed right over it thinking I had a big name nobody mentioned lol. The only AX I ever attended was in Grand Rapids Michigan when Damon was racing. He won that night if I recall Smile

Yeah it was a stacked field especially 98-03. Jeremy Buehl a 91 peak Honda rider was always in the front. Josh Hansen raced a Milwaukee ax when he was 15. He had a scary crash . Todd DeHoop raced a lot of ax races also. There was so many ways to make money in ax. Main event , fastest lap, dash for cash - money donated from the fans- very cool, heat race win, etc. Mike Jones always a threat and a crowd favorite. No handed landings and the Kiss of Death. Everyone Loved Mad Mike Jones, crazy guy.

I remember going to one in Oakland Denny was dating Miss Arenacross Michelle Falls. She was signing autographs and taking pics with the fans in the concourse and when I got my turn my cocky 17 year old ass shot my shot. I told her if Denny didn't marry her soon, I would that I would put a ring on it. Lol she told me I was adorably cute but too young for her, but I got a big hug and kiss on the cheek out of it. I wish I could find that pic. The sport was fun back then.
