A follow up question. Would you be able to respect that a large portion of the country doesn't want to live how most progressives live? Meaning, not enacting power over them to force them to live as your ideology. I don't want to live next to people who think abortion is a right, or that guns should be banned, or that churches should be forced to marry gay couples. As a Christian man, my allegiance goes first to God. I do my best to follow his commandments, and live a life he has called for his believers, but as you said, you are an atheist. Our belief and moral systems are already clashing. How do we live in the same country peacefully?

Giving you and your kids the stink eye. We had one up the street for awhile and I can honestly say FUCK THAT.
How about homeless people taking up every bench in town, pissing and shitting in the streets, openly shooting whatever into their veins and leaving used needles laying where ever they happen to toss them. We had kids down here step on used ones buried in the sand at the beach. How about theft ? Lets talk about that. My son had his new bike stolen out of a locked storage room where he lives. The door was kicked in and 3 bikes got stolen. Another person told him they saw 2 sketchy looking dudes walking them down the alley towards the park where the hang out in their tents. I went there and started poking around looking for it and I had people telling me to get away from their stuff "This is our home you can't come in our home" Yeah wrong.... I'm looking for my kids bike if you don't like it call the cops. Funny the cops don't raise an eyebrow if the theft isn't over a thousand dollars, but if they saw me questioning some one about a stolen bike somehow that wouldn't be ok. It's some fucked up shit.
So in San Clemente it went down like this;
1.Anaheim kicks the homeless camps out of the Santa Ana riverbed by Anaheim stadium.
2. Lots of them showed up here with hotel vouchers at the smaller motels in town. Great idea fantastic. Now we have people with no money jobs or income, who don't want jobs walking around with nothing but free time.
3. When the vouchers ran out tents started popping up on the beaches, in the parks, on vacant lots. It became a big problem. It was all over the news. The deal turned out to be that the cops couldn't touch them because the city of San Clemente didn't have a homeless shelter.
4. The city clears out a lot 100 yards from the beach and train station, puts up a fence, adds porta potties, fresh water station and trash service. Hence giving the homeless a clean safe FREE place to stay without being harassed, But no drugs or alcohol allowed.
5. So now the cops can clear the tents and squatters out of the parks and off the beaches, so back into the hills they go. Into the overgrown vacant lots, under the freeway bridge by trestles, where ever they can go and do their thing (heroin ? meth ?) without those pesky rules.
6. The city and NIMBYs as you call them call it a victory, out of sight out of mind I guess.
The thing is they have to want help, and a big percentage are not right mentally and or addicted to drugs and don't want to change. I appreciate your "Want to take care of everyone" mindset I do. I wish there were more people who thought that way. But calling someone a NIMBY because a person who's works their asses off to live at the beach and doesn't want to live next door to some tweaker is weak sauce at best. Tell you what you go put in 40-50 plus hours a week to live in a nice neighborhood with like minded neighbors and then start having your shit stolen and deal with all the shit that comes from giving these people a free place to stay, while everyone else slaves away. Not in my back yard ? Yeah congrats Columbo NO ONE wants that shit in their back yard, you included don't kid yourself otherwise. I hear slab city has vacancy's send them there.
My opinion for whatever it's worth is if you and other "progressives" really want to help these people out they need to figure out a way to get them to become more productive, for their own self worth. You want me and anyone else who pays taxes to pay for them to stay for free in nice affluent areas ? How's that help long term ?
Anyway thats why I didn't respond last night, I saw the word nimby and knew instantly what you're mindset is. It's not that "I don't care" nice spin though. But giving away free shit doesn't motivate people to work harder, they just get used to free shit. The whole we are a village and everyone should take care of everyone else mindset is admirable, but people are inherently lazy and greedy. You think you're going to change the world by forcing hard workers to take care of not so hard workers and its never gonna happen. The hard workers are going to fight back. And sorry not everyone has a great life, like I said it's awesome that you want to make the planet a better place, so do I believe it or not. But telling one group of people they're somehow responsible for many others who can't or won't figure out how to make it in society isn't going to work. I don't want to squelch your quest for world peace and everyone live as one like John Lennon sang about. But fuck dude there's no way, no way I see anyway. Show me where I'm wrong, enlighten me. How can you expect the worker bees to hand over more and more of their hard earned $ every fucking year to cover the asses of the people who don't want to put in the effort ? How does it work ? My theory is work hard, be nice to my fellow man, treat everyone with respect and kindness, do my best to raise my kids to be productive caring adults and generally treat everyone how I want to be treated. And donate my hard earned money to causes to help humanity when and where I can, Hence "Trying to make the world a better place"
But you (Progressives ?) theory of forcing people that have worked to be successful to pay for "Everyone" isn't a viable plan. What is the end game plan you want ?, no mega yachts ? no luxury multi million dollar homes ? no super rich rock stars buying gold toilets and diamond teeth ? No outlandish giant hotels and casinos ? no million dollar super cars ? just a peaceful planet where everyone takes care of everyone else and we're all equal ? What's the end goal ? Where do you want the planet to be in 30 years ? Do you expect super rich people to trade in their Roll's for a Prius and house people in their home ? I have no idea what the answer is, but when I hear someone say "oh the nimbys are only out for themselves, they need to pay more and give people free places to live in their town". Got to say also Sumdood's response was just as well thought out and articulated and I would put my self somewhere in between these guy's. I too work long hours and work hard for my stuff and lived in an area of differing wealth with lazy fucks who's only work is the system and that of crime to make ends meet so nothing is left out or put on display and had dirt bags break into my shed and steal my moto which I got back with only minor damage luckily after offering a $1000 no questions reward. Fuckers came back for it a few months later but my updated shed armoring prevented it. Just, so I sold it and had no moto for several years as the anguish while at work wasn't worth the few times I got to use it a year. So I get Sumdood's point also.
I had the pleasure and displeasure of visiting LA catching up with a friend who lived there downtown after Red Bud MXoN in 2018 and saw first had from a bicycle skid row and the use of any doorway or nook as a toilet location and the smell over the next couple of days. It's quite disturbing and saddening and we don't have anything near like that in Australia thankfully but with house prices getting like LA real estate here too .... Also the fear of being rolled for our valuables while walking around. My buddy still suffering mentally from having a duffel bag ripped out of his hands by the passenger of a passing car as he walked along the sidewalk and was dragged a little way towards a gate as he wouldn't let it go because of the several thousand worth of contents.
I get that those people should be looked after and have a right to some way how help them get out of the rut and become part of a good functioning society again, but I also get that everyday peeps shouldn't have to put up with the stain, shame and burden that is homelessness to those that live it and live with it. Just as you can't please everybody, you can't fix everybody so there is always going to be those that are a square peg.

My biggest issue with “those” people is they love to talk the talk but they won’t ever walk the walk. If they were that concerned about the homeless they would make sure every inch of their homes were filled wall to wall with their tents and sleeping bags. Have a back yard? Great! Let’s put dozen back there too.

I'm not bailing because of the name calling, there is literally nothing non-moto could say to me that would actually offend me (it's the fucking internet for gods sake). It does suck though because as moto bros, with tracks and trails closing left and right, we need each other more now. I'm out there saving trails and getting bike lanes installed in Los Angeles (which is no easy feat) and I'm greeted with a hearty, "fuck this libtard" by my fellow moto community because I don't want people dying in the streets. In the nearby town of Knoxville, there's a huge urban wilderness trail system for hikers, and mainly mt. Bikers.
Bike thefts in the surrounding neighborhoods, and even riders getting outright waylaid on the trails have increased dramatically.
As well as homeless camps in the woods where the trails are located
Cops will not go in there looking for the stolen bikes.
But riders themselves are going in, finding and grabbing back obviously stolen rides.
(Yeah, a homeless dude with a full suspension specialized mt bike is legit 🤣😂🤣)
The homeless are borderline gangs in the area.
Sooner or later someone is going to be seriously hurt, or worse.
All because the liberal broad who's the mayor is.....
