I hope he has found a way to deal with the demons and can start to live his life. I can not imagine being addicted to pain killers. When I broke my back they gave me pain killers and I did take them for 2 weeks. Then I got off of them because I feel it is important to feel the pain your body is dealing with and understand it. I had burst fractured my T10- fractured my T11, broken 3 ribs, punctured both lungs. Did that damn lung breather for a month.

It is always imperative to understand the stress your body is under and how it handles things.

Nico never had any problems with drugs until his heel injury. But he went from clean to slamming Roxxies and smoking dope with JLaw real quick.

I also think his return to the sport in 2010-2012 was hampered by the funky/underdeveloped Yamahas of the time.

If suzuki would have kept him on the program another year or two I think everything would have unfolded differently. But suzuki / GM basically went bankrupt anyway. Not sure how they even had the money for Dungey through 2011
Yep that triple did a number on his heel. I still stand by my point. Some make the hard choice early, while others find out later and it is even more difficult.

I have lost people close to me to OD’s, generally what happens is people try and excuse the users poor choices on them having a “disease”. Addiction is not a disease, it is compounding choices made by the user resulting in dependency on ever increasing amounts of substances. There are no excuses, do these people need help? Absolutely! And if they are friends, family, loved ones you should do everything in your power to break the hold these things have on them. But victims they are not, just my two cents.

You are correct, most times it all starts with a choice. I know guys that partied like hell and just up and stopped when they had had enough.

My childhood fireman buddy had two surgeries back to back with a torn labrum. Got hooked on pain killers through the process and even went to rehab because he knew he had a problem. Unfortunately in the end he fell off the wagon and his choice killed him.
I am very sorry to hear that, I do not wish addiction on anyone it’s horrible and seems to be ever more prevalent these days.

Good for him if that is the case. Drugs are a disease that does not descriminate. If he is on the right path and has a grip on things then moto on brother. I have never been addicted so I can't throw stones at someone that was.
Drugs are not a disease.

More power to him if he is genuinely seeking to rise above his past and live a clean and sober life. I'm speaking as a guy who lived 25+ years addicted to alcohol & cocaine...and has over 20-years of sobriety. It can be done...but you have to want it more than anything, and do it for yourself, not anybody else. He's a great rider...very talented, but I'd be a lot more impressed if he blew off racing, and got a real job with a career in his future that would support him financially for the rest of his life. One crash...one big injury, and the resulting pain medicine involvement could cause a final, and fatal relapse. I firmly believe that to stay clean, you must change people, places & things.

I hope he stays clean. I also hope an elderly person punches him in the face. Lastly, I won’t be following his moto clips set to “Hey I’m back” generic rap.

It’s not my business, but I had the same thoughts.

Someone should help him out and give him a job, he had his shot at being a racer.
Unfortunately there is a long line of enablers/future victims that are happy to bail him out of jail and buy him a bike just to be able to hang out with a former pro and see their name/company on his graphics. Bill Dill gave it as good a shot as anyone can possibly expect in '17, ended up bailing him out of jail during the SX season, gave him another shot, and the result is the long list of crimes for which he was just released from prison.

I agree if anyone truly cared about him they would advise him to get his house in order before he starts playing with dirt bikes again. Less than two weeks from the day he was bailed out until he had a bike and an entry to GH.

The last thing I'll say about Izzi is this. He is a thief, and his targets and victims have almost exclusively been from the moto community. I see how people react on Vital when someone posts up that their shit was stolen, and it usually involves some pretty extreme forms of torture if the thief is caught. I've never once heard someone wonder if maybe the thief had an addiction, or say they really hope the thief is able to get his life in order.

Just spent 25 days in the hospital...the amount of pain killers they try to give you is insane. I only needed them maybe 7 of the days I was there. Yet, every day they seemed to try and push them on me. That has been my experience pretty much every time I've been in the hospital.

Not surprised some become addicts from that. But all the addicts I've ever known are by their own choice when they choose to pop pills for recreation and then couldn't stop.

I am an rn. Currently do ED but used to work on the med floors. Specifically, i was on an ortho unit. Most opiods are listed as a PRN medication. That means you have to request it. But working on an ortho floor if you want to keep the patients pain under control you better keep them sonething going for the first 24 to 48 hours post precedure. Usually thats ever 3-6 hours depending how the order is written.
The theory is (and it works) to keep them from reaching that 10 on the pain scale. If they reach a 10 they are usually in a lot of pain and not not very happy. It will then take them awhile to get it under control vs just trying to keep them with something on board every few hours. Its much easier to maintain and keep the pt comfortable. Those intervals should get longer as the time goes on but the patients have to be realistic and not bs.
That was theory, the real world is most patients beg for the shit or their family members will beg for them. They want all they can get and then some.
The pain scale is 1-10. 1 being little pain 10 the worst imaginable. The scale should be 7-10 because no one is ever 1-6 they always dying and too stupid to be honest. Hard to control a pain when no one has pain under 7. Pain meds are usually ordered per pain scale. So, mild narcotic/iv nsaid for 1-3, 4-7 iv. Morphine/percocet 8-10 (severe pain) iv dilaudud/fentynl. So as you can see its hard to do it correct when they are sleeping and you wake them up and ask "hows your pain'" . Its a 10. You dont sleep with a 10 bro.
This became a problem with the push to make pain the 5th vital sign. Hospitals are reimbursed on pt satisfaction scores now. What you think the biggest complaint is? Yeah, my pain wasn't controlled.

Just so this is taking out of context this was just an example. A lot more goes into this than my little example. We are told to ask about patients pain constantly because whiney ass people keep saying theirs is bad. The rest of the world ain't like us moto guys. We know how to crash hard and walk it off. Too bad we are such a small precentage of the population. The world is full of whiney ass p*ssies! Its not the staff pushing because we want to feed you narcs. We are forced to do it.
Rant over.
This is the real world >" Hospitals are reimbursed on pt satisfaction scores now "< built to fail and people ask for it to be built that way . . . .

What some don’t understand is drugs can effect a persons brain chemistry permanently, I’ve seen it. I’ve heard firsthand from drug counselor that opioids multiply receptors in one’s brain. That’s why it takes more and more pills the longer you go. In some peoples brain it’s a growing monster they can’t control.

Unfortunately I lost two people very close to me that I never would have thought would have been over come by this shit. One was a super talented baseball player and the most confident, headstrong person I knew, the other was a fireman.

I Had a shoulder surgery a while back and I was determined to go post surgery without pain killers. Those things scare the shit out of me. I was able to do Ibuprofen and ice.

On a side note, I’d recommend watching a show I saw on Hulu called Dopesick. It blew me away as to how OxyContin was marketed and pushed onto the medical system. Even if part of the series was true…..
dopesick the TV show is a real life story based on the book "dopesick" by Beth Macy, a local writer in southwest VA. She also wrote "Factory Man" about the furniture industry being decimated in the same areas the Dopesick was written about.

Read both books, "Factory Man" first.

Not one time did I hear, “I know a lot of people risked their necks and spent money trying to help get me straight and I let them down and for that I’m very sorry” Wish the dude all the best with his recovery as it is a life long battle, but Nico Izzi is the only person Nico Izzi cares about. Had a great outlet there to reach the industry people be burned and what does he say? “This industry is hard to break back into once you tarnish your name.” 😂 what a punk.

Giving this guy any time to tell his story after being out for like two minutes just seems about as classless as it gets. And this is coming from someone who’s a swap fan.

I got addicted to pain meds.
It took me a few years to figure our how to stay clean.Im 5yrs clean. Treatment/rehabs, 12 steps and sober coaching.

I've had to back down my riding to less dangerous - moderate trail riding on the mtn bike. I cannot risk having to get a prescription of pain meds.

Question: is Nico dancing with the devil? Is the risk vs rewards factor worth it?
I mean; what happens when a pain med addict - get a pain med prescription? Automatic reactivation of the addiction?

Ask Colin Morrison about pain med prescriptions.

What happens when some people site down behind the camera and get interviewed? Oftentimes stage fright causes a person to lose their normal sorry tell abilities. Simple questions and answer allude the person being interviewed.

I personally know the ex-husband of that lady...took him in, gave him bikes to ride, paying his way...and Izzi banged his wife, broke up the family and more...

On the bright side, the guy got re-married and seems to have moved onto a much better life.

Well glad that fella was able to pick up the pieces and move forward from a horrible situation. Betrayal can really mess people up, seems like he is very resilient.

Entirely possible, but he seemed a lot more focused on what he could get out of the interview and kept mentioning his “haters” They guy screwed over every person in the industry that made him of course people are gonna be a little salty about it. We are talking money, marriages, property this guys ruined it all! Doubt he “choked” on anything. I really hope no one gives him any more opportunities.

Not to defend Izzi, but it takes two to tango.

She's not innocent in that scenario.

It’s the same shit over and over and over. I’ve seen this movie with a close family member. You try to help, but after a certain point you become an enabler.
He hasn’t been clean long enough (according to what I saw) to be believed with anything he says. These guys become the best con men in every sense of the word. They will have you believing whatever it is that you want to believe to make you think that you helped them get “back on track” because they know that that’s exactly what you want. Don’t fall for it. He’s a roach and until he proves otherwise, he will stay a roach. Prove me wrong, Nico.
