If you want to know the what, why, and how MavTV plus came about and the failures along with many more details that will answer most or all of the questions, do yourself a favor and listen to the first 15 minutes of this podcast by Jason Weigandt. It won't make you "like it", but hopefully it will help with some understanding.

Haha. The whole thing is actually good and worth a listen, but the first 15 minutes covers the streaming and TV package.

Pandemic

Money got tight

NBC dropped programs

It was believed MAVTV would be robust enough to handle it, and they, unlike Peacok, have no geo boundries and which country it could be played in.

Some good and some bad to MAV vs Peacock.

It was ALL predicated that the app would work.

It failed.

They knew they could not fix the issues.

Instead they took a drastic step and moved to flo sports.

No excuses for MAVTV for those who paid for it.

MAVTV took a hit and made the move to flo sports.

MAV likely lost on the deal with flo sports to honor what subscribers were paying at MAV.

People at MAVTV have lost their jobs.

MAVTV + has been shut down and more will lose jobs.

If you have an annual sub you will be refunded, and if you have a monthly sub it will not charged past July.

Thanks for the link and the heads up. I would not have seen it otherwise. What Jason said sounds sincere and it does make sense. One thing that should be learned from this debacle is.... don't wait so long to put this kind of info out. Sure, all that info wasn't known until the Flo thing was finalized but if you don't at least tell us that you know its a disaster and we are working on it, all of us are going to come up with every scenario imaginable to fill that info gap. 99% of which will be bad/wrong. Apparently no one knew ahead of time what the viewer volume was going to be, otherwise this wouldn't have happened. If MAVTV+ was up front about what they could and couldn't do in that regard, they would have said, we can't handle it. One would think that NBC could have told someone (if asked) what king of viewer load to expect. Well..... its all water over the dam at this point. It would be interesting to know if the viewership has gone down much after the switch to Flo. Just another meaningless data point though.

Nobody, especially a company like NBC, is just going to give you that type of info for free though, no matter how nicely you ask.

It’s easy for all of us to say these major companies SHOULD pay MX Sports to stream these races but to me it sounds like the Covid cuts finally hit our niche sport in the broadcasting world and the nationals were left without much options. Instead of just saying they will be strictly on cable television through MAVTV, they were optimistic and also offered a streaming service without realizing how much demand it would actually have on their servers and offering an internet stream only caused massive backlash since the vocal internet users rely on the internet stream.

Just hoping things get ironed out for next year. I’ve been able to watch all the races so far this year, albeit with some hiccups, on my computer through the legit sources so I am at least thankful for that in the end.

Agreed. This impacts Supercross just the same as their contract with NBC is over as well. They were able to put it on CNBC and USA this year to make room, but next year is all in the air for all of us to guess. I wondered why some SX events were on a business news channel this year, but it all makes sense now.

I was under the impression that MX Sports had to pay to get it on TV. If so, they should have access to that info. If they weren't then you are probably right.

At this point, I am over it. I will watch the race live until my MAV+ subscription runs out and then catch the highlight shows after the fact. I did not sign up for Flo.

It all seemed like a good idea at the time! Cool

Flo worked better than the mav app for me. From listening to that podcast it really sounded like peacock was an option, but that maybe it would be streaming only or with limited cable tv and not international.

No, he was saying Peacock was used because of NBCSN, but it is not longer an option other than the motos shown on NBC.

I’m so confused, I’ll have to read into this more. So my mavtv subscription will end automatically? And I gotta sign up for flo now? Or will the mav app still work?

Just to clarify something further. The Olympics being postponed due to the pandemic and the lost revenue from that were really the catalyst for NBC making the decision to shutter NBCSN. Up until January 2022, each second moto was still slated to be broadcast on NBCSN, so despite the first moto's being shown on MAVTV, we still would've been able to see all 4 moto's and qualifying on Peacock. But sadly, no NBCSN equals no Peacock.

Thus the scramble to find a new network package in a short time frame.

Yes.
You don’t have to signup for Flo but you won’t be able to stream the race.
Mavtv plus ends on the 27th of July.

Yet they tell me that my cancellation will be effective August 31st. They are simply incompetent.
...or con-men. Take your pick.

This experience has left me skeptical of all things associated with Lucas Oils.

Don’t need to listen to it. Here’s a quick sentence to explain it all and save the time. - People suck at their jobs and don’t care anymore.

How would they be unaware of the subscriber numbers? Like, wouldn’t you look at last years numbers? Maybe add 10% as a cushion?

Talk about complete and utter failure. Heads should roll. Sorry.

I’m not even tuning in anymore. I’ll just read up on it afterwards.

It was a fairly good but long overdue explanation.

The biggest questions I still have is why was it from Weege and why did it take so long?

From where I sit MX Sports and Davey Coombs in particular were still riding a wave of good PR. They did an awesome job of getting through Covid and giving us a series to watch even at the height of the wackiness. In addition to that even though sometimes people don't agree with everything MX Sports does most of us believe that DC and company truly love the sport and have its best interests in mind.

This streaming clusterf@#k is nothing, but ignorance and ignorance can be cured with experience. If DC would have jumped out in front of this right away most of us, me leading the charge would be of the opinion of "Call the dogs off they are working on it."

This fiasco is a textbook example of how not to handle a crisis right after a textbook example of how to handle a crisis with the Covid disaster.

MAVTV appeared to be a good destination for all things moto. Pretty epic and rapid flame out.

Sadly, this is true in all walks of life. I've been noticing it has gotten much worse in recent years.

There is nothing to explain. The broadcast started off shit and still is shit. It's simple, fix it. If you can't fix it then say so and Davey can go back and cut a new deal with Peacock...or some other broadcaster.

They literally just said they can’t fix it, they weren’t ready like they thought, and people got fired….which is where FLO comes in. I am not sure what level of ownership you want, but that was very transparent.

Bottom line. Flo "may" be an improvement for some. However, the biggest issue for me... commercials during the racing, replaying the stupid "holeshot" slowmo and breaking away from the racing to show crash/etc replays. Also, if you must have commentators (other than the announcers)....there is NO reason to show them during the race...just do the audio. We don't need to see Will (or whoever) shoving a mic in someone's face.

We just want an UNINTERRUPTED race. How freaking hard is that? If we're paying a fee to watch...fees should give us 35 min of racing (per moto).

Two things you really cant mess with in this life. 1. peoples family (kids). 2. peoples money (no matter the dollar amount). Really bad look for MAV TV and Lucas Oil (who I believe own and operate the channel). However, I highly doubt a oil company really gives a damn whether a TV channel fails or not. So I guess all of us that signed up are just out of luck on getting full refunds instead of prorated refunds. Just my $0.02.

The 2002 MXdN, the cannondale 400, and MavTV will be grouped together in epic American moto failures

So, it is confirmed that us with annual subscriptions will be refunded in full? I was auto-converted from the monthly to the annual last month, and was absolutely not happy about it and I’ve been emailing this dimwit Jesse back and forth about a refund and he is literally not comprehending anything I’m typing - just copy & posting this FloRacing stuff.

Thank you, I have not read any statement/s from them yet therefore your post gave me some insight into their current situation. So far I've been watching on Youtube and will subscribe when it comes to that...most of us will be happy to pay for a good broadcast.
