Yeah I know that’s why I rode today 1st time in 10 yrs. I watched the race with a farmer I worked for I was 13 at the time. It was really exciting we where yelling for Marty too win. Biggest upset ever. Wasn’t LOP a small shop in iL. ?

That is the day, race and American victory that started my obsession with this sport. 10 years old watched it alone on Wide World of Sports and Marty Moates became the coolest guy in the world.

I was busy working and never saw the race, but had a "holy shit" moment reading about it. Most likely in Cycle News. Isn't the second picture Marty's trainer?

Thanks Len.

Here's the rest of the story if you clicked on the link above.
After working hard his whole Life in the newspaper business, Pop bought a liquor store later on in life at Pico and Hoover in LA.

This one year we had 5 Kegs of Heineken!
Two for the night before and three for raceday for our crew of 25+ πŸ˜€

We were setup on the inside of the Infamous Carlsbad Fwy gnarly uphill and Bengt Aberg's mighty Yamaha THUMPER quit on him and he rolled over to our posse. I had a mug full of cold Heineken and he SLAMMED it down in one GULP, mud-crusted snot puppies and all! It was a Thing of Beauty! Laughing

The crowd went crazy! Woohoo

I had no idea my ol race buddy Zapata Espinosa would write about it years later.

He did an excellent job of describing the event, it really was the Woodstock of Motocross with the bikini babes, the hot sun, beer and bikes.
It was a time I'll never forget and in these days would probably never happen again.
Can't imagine security letting us dolly in three Kegs of beer!

She was FUN to have at the races...

And that my Friends is the rest of the story....Cool

"Bengt Abergs mighty BSA?"

I'm aware of him riding Huskies, Bultacos and the Yamaha, but missed him riding a BSA at the USGP.

Can you shed a bit more light on that?

Bengt raced here in OZ, in either (or both) 73 and 74 - I saw him at the Oran Park race, with Decoster, Joel Robert and a few other 'Internationals'.

Mart Moates seasons in OZ were great to watch. His KSI Honda and Ossa rides in the GPs were some of the first I remember of him.

I found all my old slides I shot that day earlier this year. I wanted them for The Motocross Files bit could not find them.ill have to have them converted to digital and post them up. That was an amazing day. I don't know what else could possibly top it in American motocross.

That's crazy.
My buddies and I were breathing the same dust.
Standing at our favorite spot on that little kicker about a third of the way down the downhill.

Those were the days.
The USGP's, TransAMA's, seeing the best in the world racing every year, and all within a few hours from home.

Didn't the Motocross Files or someone do a movie about this day? Can't remember the name of it and want my boys to watch it.

I stand corrected Bearuno, it was this bike--I just remember it being the only Thumper in the race and you could hear the bike around most of the track. Switch to the present and now it's exactly the OPPOSITE if there is a RARE 2-Stroke in a moto. Smile

I remember that kicker on the insanely fast downhill those guys were going warp speed with a left hand corner at the bottom!

I know I watched this entire broadcast a few years ago and it was quite a treat for me. I have limited knowledge of this time period, so it was really surprising to hear that the team Moates was on was what I would consider 'privateer'.

I wish we could still watch the broadcast, not sure why it's not available now. The race was epic, even for me watching it nearly 40 years later. The gravity of that moment in history is still felt to this day.

Here you go.
Great memories while watching this vid of racing there. Loved driving down the coast to go race instead of driving inland. Good times.
Ps. This has to be some of the best footage I’ve seen of Carlsbad. Very clean vid compared to what I’ve seen in the past.

Was fortunate to watch that race at the top of the
Ledge. I don’t think I’ve screamed so long/loud for an entire day. What a thing of beauty it was to watch the local kid ride like we do in our dreams

This thread brought back so many great memories, had to buy it--have yet to see it. Cool

This was my first USGP I attended in 1975 and never missed one after that.
Rocket Rex Staten on a FAST CZ holeshot and led most of the moto until his motor mounts broke and the vibration turned his hands into bloddy hamburger meat.
