Back when MX was "real".
Here's the rest of the story if you clicked on the link above.
After working hard his whole Life in the newspaper business, Pop bought a liquor store later on in life at Pico and Hoover in LA.
This one year we had 5 Kegs of Heineken!
Two for the night before and three for raceday for our crew of 25+ π
We were setup on the inside of the Infamous Carlsbad Fwy gnarly uphill and Bengt Aberg's mighty Yamaha THUMPER quit on him and he rolled over to our posse. I had a mug full of cold Heineken and he SLAMMED it down in one GULP, mud-crusted snot puppies and all! It was a Thing of Beauty!
The crowd went crazy!
I had no idea my ol race buddy Zapata Espinosa would write about it years later.
He did an excellent job of describing the event, it really was the Woodstock of Motocross with the bikini babes, the hot sun, beer and bikes.
It was a time I'll never forget and in these days would probably never happen again.
Can't imagine security letting us dolly in three Kegs of beer!
She was FUN to have at the races...
And that my Friends is the rest of the story....
I'm aware of him riding Huskies, Bultacos and the Yamaha, but missed him riding a BSA at the USGP.
Can you shed a bit more light on that?
Bengt raced here in OZ, in either (or both) 73 and 74 - I saw him at the Oran Park race, with Decoster, Joel Robert and a few other 'Internationals'.
Mart Moates seasons in OZ were great to watch. His KSI Honda and Ossa rides in the GPs were some of the first I remember of him.
My buddies and I were breathing the same dust.
Standing at our favorite spot on that little kicker about a third of the way down the downhill.
Those were the days.
The USGP's, TransAMA's, seeing the best in the world racing every year, and all within a few hours from home.
Thanks for the post. Now I have to look for a YZ465 to restore.
I remember that kicker on the insanely fast downhill those guys were going warp speed with a left hand corner at the bottom!

Pit Row
I wish we could still watch the broadcast, not sure why it's not available now. The race was epic, even for me watching it nearly 40 years later. The gravity of that moment in history is still felt to this day.
Didn't the Motocross Files or someone do a movie about this day? Can't remember the name of it and want my boys to watch it.
Yes here is the trailer:

Great memories while watching this vid of racing there. Loved driving down the coast to go race instead of driving inland. Good times.
Ps. This has to be some of the best footage Iβve seen of Carlsbad. Very clean vid compared to what Iβve seen in the past.

Ledge. I donβt think Iβve screamed so long/loud for an entire day. What a thing of beauty it was to watch the local kid ride like we do in our dreams
This was my first USGP I attended in 1975 and never missed one after that.
Rocket Rex Staten on a FAST CZ holeshot and led most of the moto until his motor mounts broke and the vibration turned his hands into bloddy hamburger meat.
