If they do I would say it would be done in the emx open category.

mx open. once the top category... after early 90's fainted away with the exception of early 00's gps where the 4t raced the old cr 500s
only in enduro racing the open class rules and especially the 300s cause big bore 4ts struggle in gnarly trails

I don't know if the issue has changed up recently, but for many years back in 08 or so when they started offering the 300 kit folks deep into KTMs considered the 250 a better bike to ride, whether SX or XC, from the factory or the add-on SX kits. Pretty awesome to have the options, and it's kind of a bike you sort of just want to have. Any kind of performance variables really wouldn't matter much for most people.

I built a 300SX back in late 2006 before there was a kit. I got the parts from Munn and if I remember correctly, ported by Clay. This was on my 2006 KTM 250SX.

The 250 was more fun, revved better. 300 had more low end but made it feel flatter.

Really curious what KTM has done at the factory if anything to resolve this issue on a production 300SX. Still 72x72, but hopefully the crankcase has more volume at least for the increased 43cc.

Super cool bike though. Really want one to compare to my YZ315

At this point, the 300 is a bitch'n bike for the Vet Class. Nothing more.

This is the truth. Saw a cherry 2021 Factory Edition on CL this morning being sold because the owner is "switching back to 2 strokes" and I immediately thought of this bike.

I've also been contemplating between this or an EV bike next summer.

This, all day long. I don't know understand the fascination with 300+cc two strokes. I've ridden plenty KTM 300's and the 250 is easier and more fun to ride. Like someone said below, more overrev as well. To each his own I guess.

You did not notice how much more bottom end the 300 has? We sell 10 to 1 300's over 250's. The only riders that really don't like the 300 are guys that can't make themselves short shift and there are those riders. I have a riding buddy that just can't do it, says he does not feel like its working right if he is not revving. That being said the 300 SX sounds like it has some over rev. That's new if it does.

Indeed I've noticed the extra bottom end, that's one of the things I don't enjoy about them, it wears me out quicker Laughing . I find the 250 the perfect sweet spot. Lug it, rev it, it's happy doing it all. I've owned a few 125s, 200s and 250s for reference.

No I get it. The guys that like the 250 over the 300 are pretty adamant about why.

Why would they need to promote them? They will sell every single one of them and most before they even hit the floor haha!

I'd be happy with 150s in the 250 class and 300 in the 450 class at least.

What I want to see, is Equivalency, not just over bored 250s.

Anything less than being allowed equivalency, is just keeping 'handicap class' rules in place, and, there's absolutely No need for such idiocy. 4 strokes long since left behind the levels of XRs etc. Look to the bore and stroke of the 2023 SXF250 : 81 x 48.5mm, straight from MotoGP development.

And, vice versa.

Individual preferences.

Each preference, is valid.

300 'fans' are quite vocal, that's for sure, and, there are plenty of them. Far more are sold than the 250. On a recent ride I went on, of the 27 bikes, there were 12 x 300s, 2 x 250Fs, 3 x 350fs, 3 x 450s, 5 x '500' 4ts, 1 x 650 4t, and one silly old blighter on a 500 2t (meWoohoo ).

I’m pretty sure it’s been raced already this year, Marcel Stauffer from Austria rode the bike in EMX open at Arco since it was a weekend off from EMX250. If I remember he top5 a moto at least.

I had a 2004 300EXC that i turned into a 300SX,with the wide ratio tranny .. Also was done at Munn with porting and stuff done by Clay . Tuned for offroad. That bike was amazing . Could lug in any gear ,and then twist it and it it came alive . An abolutely amazing machine !!

What’s stopping a privateer guy, say JWalk for example run a 300 and call it a 250. Surely AMA aren’t going to take any notice that far down?

I too prefer the 250 over the 300 in terms of ride joy but im talking about pro riders taking advantage of 300's engine to battle with 450s. btw i dont believe the 300 would have the upper hand but at least it would have been interesting

Guy Cooper said if he had to buy one dirt bike for EVERYTHING it would be a kTM 300.

He was prolly right.

For the guys arguing 250 vs 300, 300s being flat up top etc. This is not the 300s we’ve ridden.
I’d expect with the new developments, that this bike will have very different characteristics.

That's the point I was gonna make, but you beat me to it. This 300 is fuel injected, mapping options with substantial differences, powervalve is electronic. I noticed it.has a bigger bore but the same stroke as the 250. I don't know if that is the case on other 300s or kits. With kits, the stroke is generally where the extra displacement comes from, so the added power is mostly in lower RPMs making it just a smoother power delivery for the most part.
Of course there are other differences with this 300 engine that might make it run different.

300 are bigger bore 250 only. Stroke is 72mm with the big bores having 72mm bore as well, so square at 72mm x 72mm and 293cc. Strokers are a lot more work with extensive crank/crankcase changes, head work for increased stroke, reed block and carb work.

Big bores on a 250 usually bump up the bottom-mid power considerably and feel flat on top due to not having enough crankcase volume, stroke and airflow through carbs and reeds. They are really close to peak power of the 250 and feel flatter due to the bottom end having much more torque. I think this is part of the reason the KTM 300 is such a popular off road bike. You really need stroke and crankcase mods to make big power higher in the RPM's going up for a 250.

With the new KTM 300, I would be very curious to see if they have a different case from the 250. In the past, you would put on a big bore and be stuck with the 250 bottom end (250 and 300 share part number). Good for off road, but signing off a little early. TBI won't magically make the engine flow more air.

Thinking it would be a huge improvement if KTM has a different case on the new 300SX!

Didn't a couple of the KTM factory riders use 300 kitted SX's at on of the last straight rhythm's. They must have made something different to make the bike better if that's what their guys ran?

Post a reply to: any chance ktm promote the 300sx in races?
