Andy,I don't know about the 0-99 number with the letters, but the above 100 with a letter occurred because they had more than 999 riders with licenses. My first number in 1974 was 134v.

Good pic FTE.

He had factory Yammie ride in '76....thought he also rode Yammie in '75 after Hangtown winning first 125 moto and the rag in airbox dealie on the Bultaco.

Seems not long after that, he started riding for Yamaha; support or Team. Don't remember him finishing the season on the Euro Bultaco.

I understand over 1,000 Pro licenses to have a letter, but double digit riders? Oh well. Did you get assigned 321 after 134v(I would think)?

Sad that Pro MX has fallen 70+% to less than 300 active Nat/SX riders in MX and Lites combined..

He was on a number 39 Yamaha in the support class for the 1975 Trans AMA.

I thought 3 digit numbers were the numbers of novice professionals. Had to accumulate points to get a 2 digit number.

All 2 digits were earned, based on points. Only took one moto of a top 20 finish to earn a top 100 number thru the 70's though.

I had read that SoCal Newsletter dealie; forgot how good David Williams was. Vince Van Hook, Bill Rubly.....lots of names that jogged my memory....Jeff Blix another fastie.

Tim Worth was a bad ass racer; did lot of Central Cal stuff, but ventured both Nor/South..

#86 reminds me of Jennings or Gillman; although don't remember them riding 125 class. Randy Kirschbaum I thought was gonna be a badass.

Speaking of Tim Worth...How about Sammy Holland, George's older brother....he was a rocket!!!!...# 86 is supposedly David Taylor, but I don't remember him on a Suzuki in 1978. Gillman was a 250/500 specialist

Maybe it is him, but sure seemed Taylor had a higher number than #86 since he was a top 10 or just outside it 125 racer outdoors and think may have raced some indoor races.

Maybe got hurt in '77; but around that time he sure hauled ass that my brain dead cells remember.

Could it be maybe Ron Turner? Know he rode 125s in that Glover holeshot year before and was loyal Suzuki racer for a longtime....?
It's not Ron Turner, He I recall was # 26 that year

No doubt. A slow, but sure drip by drip.

Doesn't help that most every region of the country had places to ride that were close to home back then either.

Like within riding distance; not a 100 mile round trip that costs trans gas and entry fees.

Yell me about it...back in the 70's & 80's just in the L.A area you could race 5 times a week, Ascot on Wednesdays, OCIR on Thursdays, & Irwindale on Fridays, Saddleback on Saturdays and on Sundays wherever the hell you wanted to..Saddleback, Escape country, Indian dunes,Rawhide, Carlsbad Raceway,Corona Raceway ,395 Cycle park,De Anza Cycle Park......all within 45 mins to an hour drive. Now There are only 2 or 3 I can think of within a hour to 2-3 hour drive..... Damn Eco-wackos and then the economy!!!

Eco-wackos, Lawsuits, Land Development and the enlargening gap from the haves to the have nots.

Many could ride and race back then without mortgaging the house or future. Tracks all over to race as much as you wanted as you said.

Remember even when the Pros were guaranteed minimum 20 min motos locally; full gates and when 100% payback came; the best weren't doing too bad making some dough.

Saturday Saddleback was 45 minutes plus 2 laps for Pros & Int's.... I remember Radical Ron telling me he could make up to 3k to 4k racing 3 classes Wednesday through Sunday, even more if it was a big event weekend

3-4 grand a week in those days was like living the high life as long as you stayed in the money and healthy. Even a grand a week was dang good dough back then.

As long as you had bikes and parts support; you were doing pretty well in the era as long as you were up front..

$1000 per week in 1982 , you were doing real good!

Ron did very well back in day especially when his sponsors usually paid for the entry fee's for the different classes he raced in, so everything he made was profit.

86 IS Taylor.

John Hess was listed as #72. Somebody on another thread a while back claimed that Randy Hess and John Hess were one and the same.
