The science of supercross segment on the chest protector had me thinking how bad does roost bother you?

It hurts like shit, bad start from 450s and freshly tilled tacky dirt..... Feels like a cross between a hailstorm and a shot gun

I got a rock shot into my chest at mach 10 once while riding. Literally knocked the wind out of me and was sore for a month. I go euro style now with a full over the jersey chest protector.

Took a small rock to the face a few months back, chipped a tooth. $300 later at the dentist to fix it. Get dental insurance kids.

Barely ever noticed when I was on a 2 stroke, but I remember getting hit by a rock in the face by a 450 and didn't think anything of it. Got back to the pit and my dad saw me gushing blood from a cut along my left lip mustache line. Went home dumped peroxide on it, took a shower and got 4 stitches out of it. Just part of the game.

Before handguards? A lot. It’s beyond me how I’ve never fractured a finger.

After? Meh, it’s whatever.

I’m never fast enough to be in front of people so I consider myself an expert on the subject 😂

I tried the handguards for a bit because of Travis, but they always distracted me and ditched them. But this was also before 450s became the norm. I have at least 3 buddies who swore by barkbusters even in places they were not necessary, who all ended up snapping a wrist. In one case my buddy broke both wrists and had to have his old lady wipe his ass for a bit. Embarrassing as shit, even worse his dumbass told his company he did it on an mx bike and got denied disability. On the plus side that's one way too truly believe your girl loves you.

Doesn't really bother me much at all except for this type......where there's a wall jump or a large double/triple and the rider in front of you rolls the jump and grabs a handful just as the back tire is cresting the lip. I'm always suprised with just how loud that face full of roost sounds.

face full of roost

Depends on the dirt. The rocky tracks, f that. When younger I would have welts and blood and still have many scars. I like the thing under jersey protector my self.

No chest protector or hand guards with the thinnest gloves possible racing against mostly 450’s. It’s good motivation to get a start or if I don’t then to not follow and make quick passes.

I do not understand why todays gloves have all lost the roost protection.

Yeah those rocks to the chest and face don’t feel good, especially when it’s cold. Almost guaranteed to leave with bruises

Roost sucks, but I'll take it over fine sand any day of the week. It hurts less but you'll be finding that shit hiding all over your body for weeks afterwards.

Remember Wardy used to ride the bad boy 500 without hand guards OR chest protector. Fuck that!!!!

Sand is just like a day at the beach. I'll take that over just about any surface.

It really used to hurt when 500s were still common and Washougal would run practice by bike color…and I was on a CR125…that first run up horsepower hill was a new experience in pain.

Agreed.. gloves these days are fucking garbage.

And dont start me on helmets with visors that point at the moon.

Roost sucks. Especially when its freezing ass cold. My adrenaline pumping usually takes a lot of the pain away but sometimes it hits you just right.

Side note:

One of my favorite moto videos...random...but applicable.

It sucks in desert racing, because it's got lots of small stones and pebbles mixed in. Hurts, and the sound of rocks pelting my forks and shiny helmet may have hurt even worse. 450s definitely make things worse, but fast guys on two strokes put out plenty.

I recall seeing Doug Henry (YZ426F) and Ezra Lusk (CR250) go at it for 35+2 at Washougal one year, and Ezra talked about how painful it was being behind him the whole moto.

Offroad moto is gnarly!

Back in the 70's and 80's when I raced big bore two strokes I had a pair of those Hi-Point boots with the metal shields in the front of the boots and those metal shields had a natural curve to contour with the boot. Well those metal shields eventually would get pounded flat from rocks, roost etc destroying that curve those shields once had.

It depends on the dirt.

We had 1 local track that was built on an old farm field with the tackiest black dirt you'd ever seen.

The roost was terrible. Your chest was covered in welts after a race.

Hate it while practicing. Barely feel it while racing. The worst is the noise when you take a rock to the face. It's startling.

I was always an open class rider, and roost from a pack of 500 2S bikes always sucked. It certainly taught how to choose different lines when things got too bad though.

How bad did it get? Pic below shows my nearly new '88 CR after a particularly bad race. I'm pretty sure the right handlebar's gone because it got hit with a ton of that open class roost. That's my story and I'm sticking to it...

The worst is when someone roosts the downside of a roller and you're behind them and you get hit with literally a wall of rocks and dirt. It's 450s- they kick up some mean roost.

I only complain about roost to my face... imo, that hurts the most... and yes, I am one of those weirdos that wears a half mask with my googles under a full face...
