A lot of major species have evolved to start out as Male and at a certain age change to female and produce fertile offspring. Grouper, Snook and many others as well have evolved in this way to help the species survive. There is many examples of similar characteristics in many species especially species that are threatened by extinction. There is geckos for example that have live offspring that have never been with another animal. I hate to say it but with the number of gay humans recently what if the human species is slowing our drive to create offspring because our resources are limited and our evolutionary clock is slowing the population in a sense by slowing the drive to reproduce.
