450s are worthless in SX

Edited Date/Time 3/4/2022 10:43am
Listen to any GoPro video of a 450 rider. Its embarrassing the amount of throttle they don't need to use to jump half the obstacles. 50HP is about the threshold for a bike to be fast yet rideable. OMG a 250 2-Stroke has that much hp..weird. Anyways, what's your guy's thoughts. Should they have 450's in SX at all?

They definitely don’t have to shift to third on the lip to clear the triples

I love how people act like a 450 goes the speed of light or some shit.

If you give all the top guys the choice of 450 or 250 they would all pick 450. They are easier to ride fast. If being on the gas meant speed, JB51 would be 10 times champ.

Well if you have ridden one on a SX track, then you know. If you haven't, listen to a video, they don't need to go past half throttle for a triple at the face of it.

I actually think they make the class more competitive. 450's stock can still be a competitive bike. Not saying a factory bike does not make a huge difference but say we are still on 2 strokes I believe that difference would be a lot more.

Were 450’s a mistake ? Yes. Are we too far down the rabbit hole to go back now. Also yes.

I think the biggest drawback is how much they beat up the tracks. Back in the two stroke days the tracks stayed in much better shape imo.

I just miss seeing guys have to use up the bike to get around the track fast. The 250 guys now have to use the bike pretty good which is probably why the racing is closer, more often, than 450's.

So a 350 should not only be able to clear everything but it will also turn better than a 450 right? Why are no privateers riding 350s to gain a competitive edge?

Torque.

You have to ride a 350 different. More momentum more sweeping lines.

Probably because only 1 manufacturer have 350's, they just paint it 3 different colors.

So 450s are not overpowered?

If your talking about the bare minimum power needed to ride an sx track then anything bigger then a 125 is ‘over powered’. But as the old saying goes there’s no replacement for displacement and it’s easier to go faster on a 450.

It amazes me that no one has tried unless it's a mutual agreement not to run them.

I would be for 350's even though I love riding 450s. If Kawasaki made a 350 I would be the first in line.

I don’t think OP is suggesting a 350 is on an even playing field with a 450. I think he’s saying a 450 is fuckin stupid for SX. These bikes need a whopping 10 feet of run-up to clear a triple. At what point did we decide the best thing for the sport was to put these guys on bikes that have twice the torque/hp necessary to ride these tracks? I can fuckin shred a pitbike track on my 300, but it seems a bit silly, no? If we’re all on 300’s it’s fair. Fair doesn’t make it any less unnecessary. And 450’s are definitely a more cost effective option for a privateer than a 250 or 2 strokes really. But the series hasn’t exactly been tailored to the affordability for the privateers. If we’re not going back to 2 strokes, why not a stock and mod 250 class? This obviously isn’t going to happen, but that doesn’t make it less of a valid discussion.

Blame the AMA. No one made this decision except for them. In 1999 no one thought 4 strokes would be where they are today.

I have no input on 450s on SX tracks but in what world is 50hp the threshold for reliability? Every new bone stock 450 has a fair bit more than 50hp and they are all reliable.

part of the fun of having a 450 is learning the art of controlling the power. The fact that they don't need to be pinned to make the jumps doesn't mean the bikes are too much for supercross. The bikes might be too much for YOU but that doesn't mean that it's too much for me.

Your answer is what did Dungey ride when he signed with KTM. For two years before the argument was the 350 is superior in all conditions and KTM was pushing it. It seemed like the argument ground to a halt when Dungey signed and got straight on a 450.

Definitely, the 450s take inside lines and dump the clutch on exit.

It's constant modulation of the clutch to manipulate the power delivery/traction when exiting corners, but I'm sure that's what you meant.
