Footage like this is fantastic. Almost everything is available via social media these days. During this race, I was a freshman in high school and thought guys like Bailey, O'Show, RJ, and Wardy were living legends. The problem was, there was very little opportunity to watch them. I never saw footage of a Motocross des Nations until the internet became prominent. This clip is awesome.

I don’t think being a man is restricted to a particular era

TG 243 and JH84 broke collarbone and shoulder blade respectively and where out mixing it at top level in day’s.
Maybe not as hard as Mikkola but men none the less

Have we finally found evidence of the first “scrub”?

Nobody recognized the late GREAT MARTY SMITH going up Carlsbad backwards on his Penton?

A young Marty Tripes. For the youngsters Marty had more natural talent than any rider of his era and if he was feeling it that day there was nobody that could beat him.
He just did not train much if at all.

He also won the first official Supercross in the Coliseum at the age of 16 in 1972.
It was billed as the "Super Bowl of Motocross" which led to the coining of the term "Supercross."

I bought a magazine in 76 a little story and pic of Marty, I thought he was cool and sounded like he had a lot of talent. I liked Bob,s wild style also. The mag covered the Ohio gp I bought it my own cash and still have it.

Ha! Yea when I saw those pictures I knew I had to snag them for you.

Yep you don't see many Roost Factory shirts these days.

Here's a story from Anniebert:

Maki... he was sponsored by Mr Wipple, the Charmen Toilet paper guy for a while if I can recall. The best Makki story for me was his mechanic, the midget Billy Keefer. A true to life midget. Couldn't pick up his bike to put on the stand and he couldn't start the bloody thing. I wonder why? In fact when he did sit on the bike, he couldn't even reach the pegs. He was good for knocking the mud off and putting the chain lube on. But he was a character. He would alway blow up the porta potties at SB during the 4th at SB.

It was funnier then hell watching those 2 try to work together. S-One day, I tell you the story when RM and the midget invited me and Ted up to his house in Hollywood to hang out with them. It was about m-100 fireworks, Hollywood Blvd, and e-brakes....

Michael Nesmith of the Monkees just before racing the 1969 Baja1000 on his Triumph. He was on a famous team (Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Michael Nesmith)

Yea I find it amusing with all these stories of it's no big deal to have a cigarette around gas.

If anyone was at the SoCal Moto tracks during the 70's and 80's they might remember a midget mechanic by the name of Billy Keefer. I know he wrenched for Rick Maki and a few other local fast guys.

He was quite a character and lived in my hometown.
Anyway I was over at his house one day and he was in the backyard working on bikes.
He calmly lit a cigarette with a match and said watch this and threw the match in a bucket of gas that I was standing a few feet away from! Woohoo

I did not even have time to react and just go what the fuck and he had quite the chuckle. Laughing

I'm sure this was a regular prank of his!

But yeah I'm from the old school and I don't fuck around when it comes to gas and Ignition devices.

I remember that. He had custom miniature leathers
