"We have more work than we can do but can't find guys to work"
I get it that everyone wants an easy non labor intensive job that starts at 60+K a year, but someone has to do some physical work, we can't all be programmers. Where do you find those guys ?

I'm 33 and been with my current employer for 9 years (mortgage loan underwriter). It always blows my mind whenever my employer hires someone around my age or in their 20's and while getting to know them I find out they've never stayed in one place longer than a few months. It's like if the job/money/benefits/workload/responsibilities doesn't suite them perfectly in a very short time, they leave. If learning the job doesn't come super easy, they leave not willing to learn and make mistakes.

You want a real funny note? On multiple occasions we've had those people quit the first time they make a mistake and get called out on it because they simply cannot handle criticism. That's why even though I'm technically a "millennial" I absolutely hate anytime I'm referred to as such because I feel nothing like these newer generations. IMO that all comes down to parenting. Even being in a wheelchair my parents never ever allowed me to use that as an excuse to not work hard and grow up.

Employers with low-skill positions need to differentiate themselves with better incentives, which should invite a wider/better applicant pool. It will increase operational cost, but standing firm in the face of a changing economy and thinking things will eventually go back to the good-old days isn’t a great strategy.

When they’re told, you’re just thinking contradicts exactly what you were directed to do. The way you did it took away from the parts I had set aside for the other areas needing plumbed. I’ve had some very good apprentices. Unfortunately, if they’re in their early twenties, a majority of times, its a test of patience.

Now, you gotta be sensitive. They mess up, hey, it appears you have not been shown how to do this correctly. Let me show you because it seems you may have misunderstood the directions I gave you. I don’t do that but, that seems to be what it is coming to. Even when there’s two foremen having a conversation about the job. Apprentices who should be installing, seem to want to stop what they’re doing to come talk. Then when you say, can I help you, they’re feelings get hurt because they weren’t included.

Windy and cold long walk in a shuttle bus flew up I jumped out of the way then it stopped. The driver opened the door and said ya need a ride. Shocked I never saw a shuttle bus at a truck stop. I said you got a shuttle bus he dam rt get in. We stop at the ts I see his tip jar. I say I,ll give ya a dollar not much light is this a dollar or a 100. Put in his jar and said it’s a 100. The place is new and huge 3 fast food places the restaurant is down the hill. Back on the bus. There is a bar in there some classic cars where just taken out. Both buildings had alot of people working everyone was really nice. Yrs ago it was alot different they had more cool racing motorcycles, they still hv bikes hanging .

I'm an old Millenial (be 40 this year), I think alot of generational work ethic/knowledge was lost to my generation. Alot of our parents in the 80s and 90s were beneficiaries of white collar upward mobility from grandparents that were farmers or factory workers, or they were swallowed up by the offshoring of alot of jobs, or dad's that were tradesmen encouraged their kids to go to college to have an easier life than they did. If you lose a generation of 2 to either lost opportunity because industry was shuttered or lost direction because they found out those white collar jobs are unsatisfying its hard to get that work ethic back, especially if you don't see light at the end of the tunnel and a good life resulting from that hard work.
