Just posted this morning. Seems like a very quick closure, as they posted yesterday they were closed due to weather

Just came here to post this. Not sure if they were hacked, or not. Seems legit at this point. Spent many hours there over the years with my son and my friends. Had a love-hate relationship with DT. If true, thanks for the memories.

They posted the same message on their website. Sad day that place was like it’s own off-road city.

Wonder what happened that they closed officially in a day…

Came here to see if the Vital crew had any news on this. That place was pretty epic.

Came across the following.

NOTICE TO ALL RIDERS OF DURHAMTOWN PLANTATION

Durhamtown is under attack by the government/individuals/media to be closed because of the number of injuries/deaths that have occurred here

Rumors were started that there have been more than 25 deaths in 2 years and untold injuries

With this initial rumor it was reported to WAGA Channel 5 I-Team Investigation in Atlanta, with Dale Russell being the primary reporter. Dale Russell, Investigative Reporter, dale.russell@foxtv.com

More here - http://forums.13x.com/index.php?threads/fox-5-wants-durhamtown-closed.1…

Ps. The above is pretty old info but I'm guessing that the drama has dragged on over the years and finally "they" got it right to have the Venue shut down.

Really sad.

They lost a roughly 15 million dollar lawsuit to a rider that was injured due to an exposed metal culvert pipe that was 3 feet off the motocross track

So what's the truth on the injury/death issue? I can't believe it would be 25, so why can't we fight fire with fire and take down these misinformation spreaders? I've been involved with broadcast media enough to know they virtually NEVER get it right. I used to think it was just the production time pressure. Don't believe that anymore.

I have been there only once and I compounded my humorous there about 2 months ago. Needless to say its a 6000 plus acre liability in my eyes. A lot of the tracks are pretty beat, the skill level of riders is pretty low, and not to mention all the SxS and atvs blasting around the place. I've always seen durhamtown as the place for people who partake in powersports to go out 2-3 times a year and live it up. Which doesn't bring the most skilled/wise crowd of riders/drivers.

I wonder how much of it has to do with the lawsuit of the kid who got his leg chopped off by a culvert and won the suit for 14.2 million.

On a side note the paramedic in the ambulance with me said that they make 2-3 ambulance trips a week to durhamtown. I went to a hospital in Athens Georgia and that place has a very big reputation among the emts, doctors, and nurses for being dangerous because of how many patients they see get hurt there.

Google " Why did Durhamtown MX Park close"

You will find plenty info. It appears that this has been an ongoing saga starting around 2003.

I was there last year and saw the ambulance 3 times in one day. Can’t even imagine what insurance cost at a place like that. It’s an awesome facility and a shame it can’t stay open

Is it possible they would have lost the wrongful death case with DR. Adam White when the tree fell on him while he was riding the MX track ? In addition to the above lawsuit that could total up to some serious losses

How does (did) Durhamtown differ from Highland Park? I rented a KTM at HP a few years ago and found it to be a fantastic facility.

This is sad. 20 years ago, at Durhamtown, my dad plopped me down on the front of his yzf 426 and rode wheelies up and down the drag strip, soon after that he bought be my first bike and taught me how to ride on the “peewee” track.

Some cool memories there, but the place and owner sucked. Never understood the hype on the place for the past 15 years or so that I’ve gone there

At some point the cost to stay open with insurance not wanting to cover you the liability exceeds the returns.

I didnt ride too much of the trails at DT, but DT is a complete madhouse compared to Highland park in my experience. HP seems to be more suited for bikes, with very good single track trails for all skill levels (some gnarly stuff out there). And DT just felt like a mud boggin, side by siding, redneck, disaster. More motocross tracks than HP but the quality isnt really there.

I've only been to both of them once, just my experience.

Everything in this post is accurate. I have my share of horror stories from there.

Really, because the story literally says he DID NOT loose his leg...

The steel culvert nearly severed Rogers’ leg, and he underwent seven surgeries.

“The doctors did a fantastic job to save his leg,” Clark said.

Now 20, Rogers can walk “but he’s got an altered gait, and he’ll never be able to run or play sports again,” Clark said.

Here's the thread from a couple of years back that I remember...

If true, a bummer, we were there last month and entire family had a blast!
Compare the injuries to glammis, high desert, or baja, figure pretty equal just a guess. Idiots are every where.

Unfortunately when it’s a private park, they hold liability. Government? Liable? Ha!

I rode there a few times this fall. They recently started grooming the MX tracks (there are at least 3 good ones near the main parking area), and had a good time each ride. They don't allow quads/sxs's on the mx tracks.

You couldn't pay me enough $ to ride on the trails there, that seems like a deathwish with two way systems, and bikes and SxS's on the same trails going different directions.

If this holds true, this is a huge blow to the GA moto scene. That leaves basically Monroe/Scrubin Dirt as the only semi-close by track. We used to have a dozen around N and middle GA.

Had a friend die from injuries sustained there last year. I had the chance to go a few weeks ago and passed.
