Fitness watch for lap times for moto?

Edited Date/Time 10/28/2021 12:50pm
I know it been asked a million times before but I'm tying meself in knots regarding which watch for moto. I've got it down to either garmin or polar, but which ones I want a watch that can do lap times by postion rather than distance. I've got an android phone so I don't think the litpro app will work so which alternative apps are available. Based in the UK if this helps.

Garmin Fenix 6S. Bulletproof. Awesome battery life and tons of health insights. I've had a few Polar and none of them stacked up to the Fenix 6S. I had a big crash last fall and the watch came off. Found it at the end of the 3 hour harescramble with not a mark on it laying in the trail.

If you are looking for lap times only then id look at the mypitboard option. If you are wanting a fitness tracker then go for the Garmin Fenix series. I have the Fenix 6 and its amazing. I put it on my bars for every race and not a scratch after a year now. Ive used the litpro app and it didnt really do much for me but I also race offroad and only practice on mx tracks so lap times arent as important for me.

I have the polar vantage and its great. lap times aren't super accurate as its an auto-lap feature based off gps data but its accurate to within 1 second. I value the heart rate data while using a chest strap most out of everything because its the best way to guage fitness and intensity.
I personally couldn't shell out over £500 for a garmin so the polar was the second best option at around £140.

I’ve got a polar vantage M and I love it. I’m Apple based and in the US though so ymmv. I’ll probably upgrade to the newer version at some point, but I have zero complaints with this thing, other than the battery life in the chest strap I have tied into it

I've tested these lap timing apps and devices pretty extensively (LitPro, Crossbox, and MX Buddy). I've had a subscription for LitPro this entire summer. I'm not the fastest guy but I enjoy computers/tech.

You need to decide what your top priority is. If you want precise lap times you pretty much have to go the GPS route (xgps160) or use a GoPro. I found the GoPro much less reliable at times due to it's placement. If the GoPro was on my head it worked 99% of the time. If on my chest the lap times varied greatly and sometimes laps weren't picked up at all. But by using the xgps or gopro you can use the "best line" feature. If you use a GoPro you can get your height/gyro/distance jumped. Those features are only available with LitPro and a GoPro.

Any of these watches are going to provide some +/- in your laptimes. You won't be able to see the "best line" feature that LitPro offers. The Garmin and Polar are definitely light years ahead of an Apple Watch in terms of lap consistency and GPS consistency. I believe some of the Garmin and Polar watches come with a chest heart rate so if you are into that, then go that route!

Also, if you go with a watch just skip LitPro and use MX Buddy. MX Buddy offers everything that LitPro and Crossbox offers. Actually, I would say avoid Crossbox altogether since MX Buddy is the better alternative.
As you can tell I like MX Buddy. I'm no way affiliated with him. But the app allows any gps file to be entered which is great for techy dudes like me.

Then yea, CrossBox and one of those watches! I don't think you can go wrong with either the Garmin or Polar. Even if you look through here tons of guys are split. Go through YouTube and see the interfaces and get the one you like the looks of best lol

Another Polar Vantage user here and pair it with the Lit Pro MX app and I'm very happy with it so far. Of course not 100% accurate but accurate enough for me and love seeing my heart rate, calories, daily activity, etc. I second the terrible heart rate strap battery. Seems like it would last longer than it does.

Can't help you with the android part but I am very happy with my watch.

Do either the polar or garmin show laptimes on the watch themselves or do you need an app.

I found with the Polar H10 strap that taking the monitor off the strap drastically increases battery life.

I’ve been back and forth between the Polar Grit X Pro and Garmin Fenix 6 Pro for a few weeks. After a bunch of research, the Garmin seems to offer more and have better reviews across the board (but also costs about $150 more). The Garmin software seems more fluid than Polar’s. Also, the Garmin has ski resort maps which sealed the deal for me. Both can keep track of laps times, fitness data, and recovery. I don’t think that you can’t go wrong either way, but I decided on the Garmin this morning.

No shit, I’ll try that. I always wondered if it was like auto connecting and draining itself

That is exactly what happens. Only took me three years to figure that out so don't feel bad.

I have the Garmin Forerunner 935 and have been very happy with it. The Garmin Connect app has a lot of features for assessing and tracking workouts. Connect syncs with Strava and Litpro, both of which overlay tracks. With Strava, you have to create Strava segments of the track you're riding to get laptimes. With Litpro, the app "builds" the lap for you and tracks. Now Litpro has Android app.
The only thing I've been disappointed in is that very occasionally the wrist HR monitor didn't pick up accurately or has a delay. I can sync a BT enabled chest strap though, if I want more precise HR. Otherwise, I'm ok getting ballpark +/- 10 BPM.

I bought a Garmin Vivoactive 3 on FB marketplace for $75. That paired with the LitPro app does everything I need it to. I just had an awesome experience with Garmin warranty. My battery life got shorter, so I just sent the watch back to Garmin (they sent me the postage paid label) and they replaced it free of charge!

I’ve taken all of Dylan’s lap times the last 4 seasons with this watch… She’s still going strong and she’s ready for 2022…

I’m using a garmin forerunner 45 or 55, I forget but it does laps, lap length, time and fastest lap plus HR and all that jazz. Happy with it, got a good deal on it on eBay.

yes you can set up a custom sport mode to display whatever data you want on the watch screen. However the screen isn't super bright and is fairly small so its a bit tricky but not impossible to glance at the data while riding.

All I'd say is that its not going to be as impressive as a garmin gps watch like a fenix or something but does exactly what it says on the tin and is pretty much unbeatable in the £100-200 range

Not all of us are fortunate enough to have a former Supercross winner there to press the button to record lap times. The rest of us are forced to rely on GPS equipped watches.

I like the Apple Watch for fitness, mostly because I can listen to music without my phone, and it's the best all around watch.

I use the LitPro App with the gps unit. You get way more analysis than with any of the watches.

So, I use Apple Watch with a Polar strap to track HR, then I use the full gps unit with LitPro for lap times. For me, using a Polar watch for everything, while it does every well, doesn't do anything great.

I've got the Garmin Venu. Had a Vivoactive HR before and loved it, ended up going with the Venu when it crapped out. Stupid name but solid watch. You can also embed the data you've gathered into a gopro video which is pretty cool. You can really see what parts of the track get your HR pumping and where you relax. Speed..all that good stuff. Its pretty cool. I think I've seen where people do it with the litpro data as well. The Garmin app is also the best I've used. I had an Apple watch and ended up hating that thing. I don't want a "smart watch" I want a fitness watch.
